Modern one-stage video instance segmentation networks suffer from two limitations. First, convolutional features are neither aligned with anchor boxes nor with ground-truth bounding boxes, reducing the mask sensitivity to spatial location. Second, a video is directly divided into individual frames for frame-level instance segmentation, ignoring the temporal correlation between adjacent frames. To address these issues, we propose a simple yet effective one-stage video instance segmentation framework by spatial calibration and temporal fusion, namely STMask. To ensure spatial feature calibration with ground-truth bounding boxes, we first predict regressed bounding boxes around ground-truth bounding boxes, and extract features from them for frame-level instance segmentation. To further explore temporal correlation among video frames, we aggregate a temporal fusion module to infer instance masks from each frame to its adjacent frames, which helps our framework to handle challenging videos such as motion blur, partial occlusion and unusual object-to-camera poses. Experiments on the YouTube-VIS valid set show that the proposed STMask with ResNet-50/-101 backbone obtains 33.5 % / 36.8 % mask AP, while achieving 28.6 / 23.4 FPS on video instance segmentation. Current instance segmentation methods can be categorized into segmentation-based methods that segment first then do clustering, and proposal-based methods that detect first then predict masks for each instance proposal using repooling. In this work, we propose a one-stage method, named EmbedMask, that unifies both methods by taking advantages of them. Like proposal-based methods, EmbedMask builds on top of detection models making it strong in detection capability. Meanwhile, EmbedMask applies extra embedding modules to generate embeddings for pixels and proposals, where pixel embeddings are guided by proposal embeddings if they belong to the same instance. Through this embedding coupling process, pixels are assigned to the mask of the proposal if their embeddings are similar. The pixel-level clustering enables EmbedMask to generate high-resolution masks without missing details from repooling, and the existence of proposal embedding simplifies and strengthens the clustering procedure to achieve high speed with higher performance than segmentation-based methods. Without any bells and whistles, EmbedMask achieves comparable performance as Mask R-CNN, which is the representative two-stage method, and can produce more detailed masks at a higher speed. Video Instance Segmentation (VIS) is a new and inherently multi-task problem, which aims to detect, segment and track each instance in a video sequence. Existing approaches are mainly based on single-frame features or single-scale features of multiple frames, where temporal information or multi-scale information is ignored. To incorporate both temporal and scale information, we propose a Temporal Pyramid Routing (TPR) strategy to conditionally align and conduct pixel-level aggregation from a feature pyramid pair of two adjacent frames. Specifically, TPR contains two novel components, including Dynamic Aligned Cell Routing (DACR) and Cross Pyramid Routing (CPR), where DACR is designed for aligning and gating pyramid features across temporal dimension, while CPR transfers temporally aggregated features across scale dimension. Moreover, our approach is a plug-and-play module and can be easily applied to existing instance segmentation methods. Extensive experiments on YouTube-VIS dataset demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach on several state-of-the-art instance segmentation methods. Single-stage instance segmentation approaches have recently gained popularity due to their speed and simplicity, but are still lagging behind in accuracy, compared to two-stage methods. We propose a fast single-stage instance segmentation method, called SipMask, that preserves instance-specific spatial information by separating mask prediction of an instance to different sub-regions of a detected bounding-box. Our main contribution is a novel light-weight spatial preservation (SP) module that generates a separate set of spatial coefficients for each sub-region within a bounding-box, leading to improved mask predictions. It also enables accurate delineation of spatially adjacent instances. Further, we introduce a mask alignment weighting loss and a feature alignment scheme to better correlate mask prediction with object detection. On COCO test-dev, our SipMask outperforms the existing single-stage methods. Compared to the state-of-the-art single-stage TensorMask, SipMask obtains an absolute gain of 1.0% (mask AP), while providing a four-fold speedup. In terms of real-time capabilities, SipMask outperforms YOLACT with an absolute gain of 3.0% (mask AP) under similar settings, while operating at comparable speed on a Titan Xp. Precise localization of polyp is crucial for early cancer screening in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Videos given by endoscopy bring both richer contextual information as well as more challenges than still images. The camera-moving situation, instead of the common camera-fixed-object-moving one, leads to significant background variation between frames. Severe internal artifacts (e.g. water flow in the human body, specular reflection by tissues) can make the quality of adjacent frames vary considerately. These factors hinder a video-based model to effectively aggregate features from neighborhood frames and give better predictions. In this paper, we present Spatial-Temporal Feature Transformation (STFT), a multi-frame collaborative framework to address these issues. Spatially, STFT mitigates inter-frame variations in the camera-moving situation with feature alignment by proposal-guided deformable convolutions. Temporally, STFT proposes a channel-aware attention module to simultaneously estimate the quality and correlation of adjacent frames for adaptive feature aggregation. Empirical studies and superior results demonstrate the effectiveness and stability of our method. For example, STFT improves the still image baseline FCOS by 10.6% and 20.6% on the comprehensive F1-score of the polyp localization task in CVC-Clinic and ASUMayo datasets, respectively, and outperforms the state-of-the-art video-based method by 3.6% and 8.0%, respectively. Language-queried video actor segmentation aims to predict the pixel-level mask of the actor which performs the actions described by a natural language query in the target frames. Existing methods adopt 3D CNNs over the video clip as a general encoder to extract a mixed spatio-temporal feature for the target frame. Though 3D convolutions are amenable to recognizing which actor is performing the queried actions, it also inevitably introduces misaligned spatial information from adjacent frames, which confuses features of the target frame and yields inaccurate segmentation. Therefore, we propose a collaborative spatial-temporal encoder-decoder framework which contains a 3D temporal encoder over the video clip to recognize the queried actions, and a 2D spatial encoder over the target frame to accurately segment the queried actors. In the decoder, a Language-Guided Feature Selection (LGFS) module is proposed to flexibly integrate spatial and temporal features from the two encoders. We also propose a Cross-Modal Adaptive Modulation (CMAM) module to dynamically recombine spatial- and temporal-relevant linguistic features for multimodal feature interaction in each stage of the two encoders. Our method achieves new state-of-the-art performance on two popular benchmarks with less computational overhead than previous approaches.
