Understanding the scene around the ego-vehicle is key to assisted and autonomous driving. Nowadays, this is mostly conducted using cameras and laser scanners, despite their reduced performances in adverse weather conditions. Automotive radars are low-cost active sensors that measure properties of surrounding objects, including their relative speed, and have the key advantage of not being impacted by rain, snow or fog. However, they are seldom used for scene understanding due to the size and complexity of radar raw data and the lack of annotated datasets. Fortunately, recent open-sourced datasets have opened up research on classification, object detection and semantic segmentation with raw radar signals using end-to-end trainable models. In this work, we propose several novel architectures, and their associated losses, which analyse multiple views of the range-angle-Doppler radar tensor to segment it semantically. Experiments conducted on the recent CARRADA dataset demonstrate that our best model outperforms alternative models, derived either from the semantic segmentation of natural images or from radar scene understanding, while requiring significantly fewer parameters. Semantic segmentation of 3D meshes is an important problem for 3D scene understanding. In this paper we revisit the classic multiview representation of 3D meshes and study several techniques that make them effective for 3D semantic segmentation of meshes. Given a 3D mesh reconstructed from RGBD sensors, our method effectively chooses different virtual views of the 3D mesh and renders multiple 2D channels for training an effective 2D semantic segmentation model. Features from multiple per view predictions are finally fused on 3D mesh vertices to predict mesh semantic segmentation labels. Using the large scale indoor 3D semantic segmentation benchmark of ScanNet, we show that our virtual views enable more effective training of 2D semantic segmentation networks than previous multiview approaches. When the 2D per pixel predictions are aggregated on 3D surfaces, our virtual multiview fusion method is able to achieve significantly better 3D semantic segmentation results compared to all prior multiview approaches and competitive with recent 3D convolution approaches.
This paper presents an efficient annotation procedure and an application thereof to end-to-end, rich semantic segmentation of the sensed environment using FMCW scanning radar. We advocate radar over the traditional sensors used for this task as it operates at longer ranges and is substantially more robust to adverse weather and illumination conditions. We avoid laborious manual labelling by exploiting the largest radar-focused urban autonomy dataset collected to date, correlating radar scans with RGB cameras and LiDAR sensors, for which semantic segmentation is an already consolidated procedure. The training procedure leverages a state-of-the-art natural image segmentation system which is publicly available and as such, in contrast to previous approaches, allows for the production of copious labels for the radar stream by incorporating four camera and two LiDAR streams. Additionally, the losses are computed taking into account labels to the radar sensor horizon by accumulating LiDAR returns along a pose-chain ahead and behind of the current vehicle position. Finally, we present the network with multi-channel radar scan inputs in order to deal with ephemeral and dynamic scene objects.
Sensing surroundings plays a crucial role in human spatial perception, as it extracts the spatial configuration of objects as well as the free space from the observations. To facilitate the robot perception with such a surrounding sensing capability, we introduce a novel visual task called Cross-view Semantic Segmentation as well as a framework named View Parsing Network (VPN) to address it. In the cross-view semantic segmentation task, the agent is trained to parse the first-view observations into a top-down-view semantic map indicating the spatial location of all the objects at pixel-level. The main issue of this task is that we lack the real-world annotations of top-down-view data. To mitigate this, we train the VPN in 3D graphics environment and utilize the domain adaptation technique to transfer it to handle real-world data. We evaluate our VPN on both synthetic and real-world agents. The experimental results show that our model can effectively make use of the information from different views and multi-modalities to understanding spatial information. Our further experiment on a LoCoBot robot shows that our model enables the surrounding sensing capability from 2D image input. At the heart of all automated driving systems is the ability to sense the surroundings, e.g., through semantic segmentation of LiDAR sequences, which experienced a remarkable progress due to the release of large datasets such as SemanticKITTI and nuScenes-LidarSeg. While most previous works focus on sparse segmentation of the LiDAR input, dense output masks provide self-driving cars with almost complete environment information. In this paper, we introduce MASS - a Multi-Attentional Semantic Segmentation model specifically built for dense top-view understanding of the driving scenes. Our framework operates on pillar- and occupancy features and comprises three attention-based building blocks: (1) a keypoint-driven graph attention, (2) an LSTM-based attention computed from a vector embedding of the spatial input, and (3) a pillar-based attention, resulting in a dense 360-degree segmentation mask. With extensive experiments on both, SemanticKITTI and nuScenes-LidarSeg, we quantitatively demonstrate the effectiveness of our model, outperforming the state of the art by 19.0% on SemanticKITTI and reaching 32.7% in mIoU on nuScenes-LidarSeg, where MASS is the first work addressing the dense segmentation task. Furthermore, our multi-attention model is shown to be very effective for 3D object detection validated on the KITTI-3D dataset, showcasing its high generalizability to other tasks related to 3D vision.
Point cloud segmentation is a fundamental visual understanding task in 3D vision. A fully supervised point cloud segmentation network often requires a large amount of data with point-wise annotations, which is expensive to obtain. In this work, we present the Compositional Prototype Network that can undertake point cloud segmentation with only a few labeled training data. Inspired by the few-shot learning literature in images, our network directly transfers label information from the limited training data to unlabeled test data for prediction. The network decomposes the representations of complex point cloud data into a set of local regional representations and utilizes them to calculate the compositional prototypes of a visual concept. Our network includes a key Multi-View Comparison Component that exploits the redundant views of the support set. To evaluate the proposed method, we create a new segmentation benchmark dataset, ScanNet-$6^i$, which is built upon ScanNet dataset. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms baselines with a significant advantage. Moreover, when we use our network to handle the long-tail problem in a fully supervised point cloud segmentation dataset, it can also effectively boost the performance of the few-shot classes.
