How can non-communicating agents learn to share congested resources efficiently? This is a challenging task when the agents can access the same resource simultaneously (in contrast to multi-agent multi-armed bandit problems) and the resource valuations differ among agents. We present a fully distributed algorithm for learning to share in congested environments and prove that the agents regret with respect to the optimal allocation is poly-logarithmic in the time horizon. Performance in the non-asymptotic regime is illustrated in numerical simulations. The distributed algorithm has applications in cloud computing and spectrum sharing. This paper presents a data-driven approach for multi-robot coordination in partially-observable domains based on Decentralized Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (Dec-POMDPs) and macro-actions (MAs). Dec-POMDPs provide a general framework for cooperative sequential decision making under uncertainty and MAs allow temporally extended and asynchronous action execution. To date, most methods assume the underlying Dec-POMDP model is known a priori or a full simulator is available during planning time. Previous methods which aim to address these issues suffer from local optimality and sensitivity to initial conditions. Additionally, few hardware demonstrations involving a large team of heterogeneous robots and with long planning horizons exist. This work addresses these gaps by proposing an iterative sampling based Expectation-Maximization algorithm (iSEM) to learn polices using only trajectory data containing observations, MAs, and rewards. Our experiments show the algorithm is able to achieve better solution quality than the state-of-the-art learning-based methods. We implement two variants of multi-robot Search and Rescue (SAR) domains (with and without obstacles) on hardware to demonstrate the learned policies can effectively control a team of distributed robots to cooperate in a partially observable stochastic environment.
We show how a high-performing, fully distributed and symmetric neural V-formation controller can be synthesized from a Centralized MPC (Model Predictive Control) controller using Deep Learning. This result is significant as we also establish that under very reasonable conditions, it is impossible to achieve V-formation using a deterministic, distributed, and symmetric controller. The learning process we use for the neural V-formation controller is significantly enhanced by CEGkR, a Counterexample-Guided k-fold Retraining technique we introduce, which extends prior work in this direction in important ways. Our experimental results show that our neural V-formation controller generalizes to a significantly larger number of agents than for which it was trained (from 7 to 15), and exhibits substantial speedup over the MPC-based controller. We use a form of statistical model checking to compute confidence intervals for our neural V-formation controllers convergence rate and time to convergence.
To accomplish complex swarm robotic missions in the real world, one needs to plan and execute a combination of single robot behaviors, group primitives such as task allocation, path planning, and formation control, and mission-specific objectives such as target search and group coverage. Most such missions are designed manually by teams of robotics experts. Recent work in automated approaches to learning swarm behavior has been limited to individual primitives with sparse work on learning complete missions. This paper presents a systematic approach to learn tactical mission-specific policies that compose primitives in a swarm to accomplish the mission efficiently using neural networks with special input and output encoding. To learn swarm tactics in an adversarial environment, we employ a combination of 1) map-to-graph abstraction, 2) input/output encoding via Pareto filtering of points of interest and clustering of robots, and 3) learning via neuroevolution and policy gradient approaches. We illustrate this combination as critical to providing tractable learning, especially given the computational cost of simulating swarm missions of this scale and complexity. Successful mission completion outcomes are demonstrated with up to 60 robots. In addition, a close match in the performance statistics in training and testing scenarios shows the potential generalizability of the proposed framework.
Voting rules may fail to implement the will of the society when only some voters actively participate, and/or in the presence of sybil (fake or duplicate) voters. Here we aim to address social choice in the presence of sybils and voter abstention. To do so we assume the status-quo (Reality) as an ever-present distinguished alternative, and study Reality Enforcing voting rules, which add virtual votes in support of the status-quo. We measure the tradeoff between safety and liveness (the ability of active honest voters to maintain/change the status-quo, respectively) in a variety of domains, and show that the Reality Enforcing voting rule is optimal in this respect.
Neurobiological theories of spatial cognition developed with respect to recording data from relatively small and/or simplistic environments compared to animals natural habitats. It has been unclear how to extend theoretical models to large or complex spaces. Complementarily, in autonomous systems technology, applications have been growing for distributed control methods that scale to large numbers of low-footprint mobile platforms. Animals and many-robot groups must solve common problems of navigating complex and uncertain environments. Here, we introduce the NeuroSwarms control framework to investigate whether adaptive, autonomous swarm control of minimal artificial agents can be achieved by direct analogy to neural circuits of rodent spatial cognition. NeuroSwarms analogizes agents to neurons and swarming groups to recurrent networks. We implemented neuron-like agent interactions in which mutually visible agents operate as if they were reciprocally-connected place cells in an attractor network. We attributed a phase state to agents to enable patterns of oscillatory synchronization similar to hippocampal models of theta-rhythmic (5-12 Hz) sequence generation. We demonstrate that multi-agent swarming and reward-approach dynamics can be expressed as a mobile form of Hebbian learning and that NeuroSwarms supports a single-entity paradigm that directly informs theoretical models of animal cognition. We present emergent behaviors including phase-organized rings and trajectory sequences that interact with environmental cues and geometry in large, fragmented mazes. Thus, NeuroSwarms is a model artificial spatial system that integrates autonomous control and theoretical neuroscience to potentially uncover common principles to advance both domains.
