Machine learning based singing voice models require large datasets and lengthy training times. In this work we present a lightweight architecture, based on the Differentiable Digital Signal Processing (DDSP) library, that is able to output song-like utterances conditioned only on pitch and amplitude, after twelve hours of training using small datasets of unprocessed audio. The results are promising, as both the melody and the singers voice are recognizable. In addition, we present two zero-configuration tools to train new models and experiment with them. Currently we are exploring the latent space representation, which is included in the DDSP library, but not in the original DDSP examples. Our results indicate that the latent space improves both the identification of the singer as well as the comprehension of the lyrics. Neural audio synthesis is an actively researched topic, having yielded a wide range of techniques that leverages machine learning architectures. Google Magenta elaborated a novel approach called Differential Digital Signal Processing (DDSP) that incorporates deep neural networks with preconditioned digital signal processing techniques, reaching state-of-the-art results especially in timbre transfer applications. However, most of these techniques, including the DDSP, are generally not applicable in real-time constraints, making them ineligible in a musical workflow. In this paper, we present a real-time implementation of the DDSP library embedded in a virtual synthesizer as a plug-in that can be used in a Digital Audio Workstation. We focused on timbre transfer from learned representations of real instruments to arbitrary sound inputs as well as controlling these models by MIDI. Furthermore, we developed a GUI for intuitive high-level controls which can be used for post-processing and manipulating the parameters estimated by the neural network. We have conducted a user experience test with seven participants online. The results indicated that our users found the interface appealing, easy to understand, and worth exploring further. At the same time, we have identified issues in the timbre transfer quality, in some components we did not implement, and in installation and distribution of our plugin. With the rapid development of neural network architectures and speech processing models, singing voice synthesis with neural networks is becoming the cutting-edge technique of digital music production. In this work, in order to explore how to improve the quality and efficiency of singing voice synthesis, in this work, we use encoder-decoder neural models and a number of vocoders to achieve singing voice synthesis. We conduct experiments to demonstrate that the models can be trained using voice data with pitch information, lyrics and beat information, and the trained models can produce smooth, clear and natural singing voice that is close to real human voice. As the models work in the end-to-end manner, they allow users who are not domain experts to directly produce singing voice by arranging pitches, lyrics and beats.
Since the vocal component plays a crucial role in popular music, singing voice detection has been an active research topic in music information retrieval. Although several proposed algorithms have shown high performances, we argue that there still is a room to improve to build a more robust singing voice detection system. In order to identify the area of improvement, we first perform an error analysis on three recent singing voice detection systems. Based on the analysis, we design novel methods to test the systems on multiple sets of internally curated and generated data to further examine the pitfalls, which are not clearly revealed with the current datasets. From the experiment results, we also propose several directions towards building a more robust singing voice detector.
A main challenge in applying deep learning to music processing is the availability of training data. One potential solution is Multi-task Learning, in which the model also learns to solve related auxiliary tasks on additional datasets to exploit their correlation. While intuitive in principle, it can be challenging to identify related tasks and construct the model to optimally share information between tasks. In this paper, we explore vocal activity detection as an additional task to stabilise and improve the performance of vocal separation. Further, we identify problematic biases specific to each dataset that could limit the generalisation capability of separation and detection models, to which our proposed approach is robust. Experiments show improved performance in separation as well as vocal detection compared to single-task baselines. However, we find that the commonly used Signal-to-Distortion Ratio (SDR) metrics did not capture the improvement on non-vocal sections, indicating the need for improved evaluation methodologies.
The neural network (NN) based singing voice synthesis (SVS) systems require sufficient data to train well and are prone to over-fitting due to data scarcity. However, we often encounter data limitation problem in building SVS systems because of high data acquisition and annotation costs. In this work, we propose a Perceptual Entropy (PE) loss derived from a psycho-acoustic hearing model to regularize the network. With a one-hour open-source singing voice database, we explore the impact of the PE loss on various mainstream sequence-to-sequence models, including the RNN-based, transformer-based, and conformer-based models. Our experiments show that the PE loss can mitigate the over-fitting problem and significantly improve the synthesized singing quality reflected in objective and subjective evaluations.
