This paper describes an image based visual servoing (IBVS) system for a nonholonomic robot to achieve good trajectory following without real-time robot pose information and without a known visual map of the environment. We call it trajectory servoing. The critical component is a feature-based, indirect SLAM method to provide a pool of available features with estimated depth, so that they may be propagated forward in time to generate image feature trajectories for visual servoing. Short and long distance experiments show the benefits of trajectory servoing for navigating unknown areas without absolute positioning. Trajectory servoing is shown to be more accurate than pose-based feedback when both rely on the same underlying SLAM system.

Odometer-aided visual-inertial SLAM systems typically have a good performance for navigation of wheeled platforms, while they usually suffer from degenerate cases before the first turning. In this paper, firstly we perform an observability analysis w.r.t. the extrinsic parameters before the first turning, which is a complement of the existing results of observability analyses. Secondly, inspired by the above observability analyses, we propose a bidirectional trajectory computation method, by which the poses before the first turning are refined in the backward computation thread, and the real-time trajectory is adjusted accordingly. Experimental results prove that our proposed method not only solves the problem of the unobservability of accelerometer bias and extrinsic parameters before the first turning, but also results in more accurate trajectories in comparison with the state-of-the-art approaches.

The recent works on quadrotor have focused on more and more challenging tasks on increasingly complex systems. Systems are often augmented with slung loads, inverted pendulums or arms, and accomplish complex tasks such as going through a window, grasping, throwing or catching. Usually, controllers are designed to accomplish a specific task on a specific system using analytic solutions, so each application needs long preparations. On the other hand, the direct multiple shooting approach is able to solve complex problems without any analytic development, by using on-the-shelf optimization solver. In this paper, we show that this approach is able to solve a wide range of problems relevant to quadrotor systems, from on-line trajectory generation for quadrotors, to going through a window for a quadrotor-and-pendulum system, through manipulation tasks for a aerial manipulator.
The visibility of targets determines performance and even success rate of various applications, such as active slam, exploration, and target tracking. Therefore, it is crucial to take the visibility of targets into explicit account in trajectory planning. In this paper, we propose a general metric for target visibility, considering observation distance and angle as well as occlusion effect. We formulate this metric into a differentiable visibility cost function, with which spatial trajectory and yaw can be jointly optimized. Furthermore, this visibility-aware trajectory optimization handles dynamic feasibility of position and yaw simultaneously. To validate that our method is practical and generic, we integrate it into a customized quadrotor tracking system. The experimental results show that our visibility-aware planner performs more robustly and observes targets better. In order to benefit related researches, we release our code to the public.

We consider the problem of bridging the gap between geometric tracking control theory and implementation of model predictive control (MPC) for robotic systems operating on manifolds. We propose a generic on-manifold MPC formulation based on a canonical representation of the system evolving on manifolds. Then, we present a method that solves the on-manifold MPC formulation by linearizing the system along the trajectory under tracking. There are two main advantages of the proposed scheme. The first is that the linearized system leads to an equivalent error system represented by a set of minimal parameters without any singularity. Secondly, the process of system modeling, error-system derivation, linearization and control has the manifold constraints completely decoupled from the system descriptions, enabling the development of a symbolic MPC framework that naturally encapsulates the manifold constraints. In this framework, users need only to supply system-specific descriptions without dealing with the manifold constraints. We implement this framework and test it on a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operating on $SO(3) times mathbb{R}^n$ and an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) moving on a curved surface. Real-world experiments show that the proposed framework and implementation achieve high tracking performance and computational efficiency even in highly aggressive aerobatic quadrotor maneuvers.
We present a framework for bi-level trajectory optimization in which a systems dynamics are encoded as the solution to a constrained optimization problem and smooth gradients of this lower-level problem are passed to an upper-level trajectory optimizer. This optimization-based dynamics representation enables constraint handling, additional variables, and non-smooth forces to be abstracted away from the upper-level optimizer, and allows classical unconstrained optimizers to synthesize trajectories for more complex systems. We provide a path-following method for efficient evaluation of constrained dynamics and utilize the implicit-function theorem to compute smooth gradients of this representation. We demonstrate the framework by modeling systems from locomotion, aerospace, and manipulation domains including: acrobot with joint limits, cart-pole subject to Coulomb friction, Raibert hopper, rocket landing with thrust limits, and planar-push task with optimization-based dynamics and then optimize trajectories using iterative LQR.
