In this work, we present a generalized and robust facial manipulation detection method based on color distribution analysis of the vertical region of edge in a manipulated image. Most of the contemporary facial manipulation method involves pixel correction procedures for reducing awkwardness of pixel value differences along the facial boundary in a synthesized image. For this procedure, there are distinctive differences in the facial boundary between face manipulated image and unforged natural image. Also, in the forged image, there should be distinctive and unnatural features in the gap distribution between facial boundary and background edge region because it tends to damage the natural effect of lighting. We design the neural network for detecting face-manipulated image with these distinctive features in facial boundary and background edge. Our extensive experiments show that our method outperforms other existing face manipulation detection methods on detecting synthesized face image in various datasets regardless of whether it has participated in training.

In this work, we use facial landmarks to make the deformation for facial images more authentic. The deformation includes the expansion of eyes and the shrinking of noses, mouths, and cheeks. An advanced 106-point facial landmark detector is utilized to provide control points for deformation. Bilinear interpolation is used in the expansion and Moving Least Squares methods (MLS) including Affine Deformation, Similarity Deformation and Rigid Deformation are used in the shrinking. We compare the running time as well as the quality of deformed images using different MLS methods. The experimental results show that the Rigid Deformation which can keep other parts of the images unchanged performs better even if it takes the longest time.

Dipole and higher moments are physical quantities used to describe a charge distribution. In analogy with electromagnetism, it is possible to define the dipole moments for a gray-scale image, according to the single aspect of a gray-tone map. In this paper we define the color dipole moments for color images. For color maps in fact, we have three aspects, the three primary colors, to consider. Associating three color charges to each pixel, color dipole moments can be easily defined and used for edge detection.
Facial expression synthesis or editing has recently received increasing attention in the field of affective computing and facial expression modeling. However, most existing facial expression synthesis works are limited in paired training data, low resolution, identity information damaging, and so on. To address those limitations, this paper introduces a novel Action Unit (AU) level facial expression synthesis method called Local Attentive Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (LAC-GAN) based on face action units annotations. Given desired AU labels, LAC-GAN utilizes local AU regional rules to control the status of each AU and attentive mechanism to combine several of them into the whole photo-realistic facial expressions or arbitrary facial expressions. In addition, unpaired training data is utilized in our proposed method to train the manipulation module with the corresponding AU labels, which learns a mapping between a facial expression manifold. Extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluations are conducted on the commonly used BP4D dataset to verify the effectiveness of our proposed AU synthesis method.
In this paper, we propose a new approach for facial expression recognition using deep covariance descriptors. The solution is based on the idea of encoding local and global Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) features extracted from still images, in compact local and global covariance descriptors. The space geometry of the covariance matrices is that of Symmetric Positive Definite (SPD) matrices. By conducting the classification of static facial expressions using Support Vector Machine (SVM) with a valid Gaussian kernel on the SPD manifold, we show that deep covariance descriptors are more effective than the standard classification with fully connected layers and softmax. Besides, we propose a completely new and original solution to model the temporal dynamic of facial expressions as deep trajectories on the SPD manifold. As an extension of the classification pipeline of covariance descriptors, we apply SVM with valid positive definite kernels derived from global alignment for deep covariance trajectories classification. By performing extensive experiments on the Oulu-CASIA, CK+, and SFEW datasets, we show that both the proposed static and dynamic approaches achieve state-of-the-art performance for facial expression recognition outperforming many recent approaches.

Facial expression manipulation aims at editing facial expression with a given condition. Previous methods edit an input image under the guidance of a discrete emotion label or absolute condition (e.g., facial action units) to possess the desired expression. However, these methods either suffer from changing condition-irrelevant regions or are inefficient for fine-grained editing. In this study, we take these two objectives into consideration and propose a novel method. First, we replace continuous absolute condition with relative condition, specifically, relative action units. With relative action units, the generator learns to only transform regions of interest which are specified by non-zero-valued relative AUs. Second, our generator is built on U-Net but strengthened by Multi-Scale Feature Fusion (MSF) mechanism for high-quality expression editing purposes. Extensive experiments on both quantitative and qualitative evaluation demonstrate the improvements of our proposed approach compared to the state-of-the-art expression editing methods.
