Recommender systems have played a vital role in online platforms due to the ability of incorporating users personal tastes. Beyond accuracy, diversity has been recognized as a key factor in recommendation to broaden users horizons as well as to promote enterprises sales. However, the trading-off between accuracy and diversity remains to be a big challenge, and the data and user biases have not been explored yet. In this paper, we develop an adaptive learning framework for accurate and diversified recommendation. We generalize recent proposed bi-lateral branch network in the computer vision community from image classification to item recommendation. Specifically, we encode domain level diversity by adaptively balancing accurate recommendation in the conventional branch and diversified recommendation in the adaptive branch of a bilateral branch network. We also capture user level diversity using a two-way adaptive metric learning backbone network in each branch. We conduct extensive experiments on three real-world datasets. Results demonstrate that our proposed approach consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines.

Interactive search sessions often contain multiple queries, where the user submits a reformulated version of the previous query in response to the original results. We aim to enhance the query recommendation experience for a commercial image search engine. Our proposed methodology incorporates current state-of-the-art practices from relevant literature -- the use of generation-based sequence-to-sequence models that capture session context, and a multitask architecture that simultaneously optimizes the ranking of results. We extend this setup by driving the learning of such a model with captions of clicked images as the target, instead of using the subsequent query within the session. Since these captions tend to be linguistically richer, the reformulation mechanism can be seen as assistance to construct more descriptive queries. In addition, via the use of a pairwise loss for the secondary ranking task, we show that the generated reformulations are more diverse.
Over the past decade, many startups have sprung up, which create a huge demand for financial support from venture investors. However, due to the information asymmetry between investors and companies, the financing process is usually challenging and time-consuming, especially for the startups that have not yet obtained any investment. Because of this, effective data-driven techniques to automatically match startups with potentially relevant investors would be highly desirable. Here, we analyze 34,469 valid investment events collected from www.itjuzi.com and consider the cold-start problem of recommending investors for new startups. We address this problem by constructing different tripartite network representations of the data where nodes represent investors, companies, and companies domains. First, we find that investors have strong domain preferences when investing, which motivates us to introduce virtual links between investors and investment domains in the tripartite network construction. Our analysis of the recommendation performance of diffusion-based algorithms applied to various network representations indicates that prospective investors for new startups are effectively revealed by integrating network diffusion processes with investors domain preference.
Our work focuses on tackling the challenging but natural visual recognition task of long-tailed data distribution (i.e., a few classes occupy most of the data, while most classes have rarely few samples). In the literature, class re-balancing strategies (e.g., re-weighting and re-sampling) are the prominent and effective methods proposed to alleviate the extreme imbalance for dealing with long-tailed problems. In this paper, we firstly discover that these re-balancing methods achieving satisfactory recognition accuracy owe to that they could significantly promote the classifier learning of deep networks. However, at the same time, they will unexpectedly damage the representative ability of the learned deep features to some extent. Therefore, we propose a unified Bilateral-Branch Network (BBN) to take care of both representation learning and classifier learning simultaneously, where each branch does perform its own duty separately. In particular, our BBN model is further equipped with a novel cumulative learning strategy, which is designed to first learn the universal patterns and then pay attention to the tail data gradually. Extensive experiments on four benchmark datasets, including the large-scale iNaturalist ones, justify that the proposed BBN can significantly outperform state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, validation experiments can demonstrate both our preliminary discovery and effectiveness of tailored designs in BBN for long-tailed problems. Our method won the first place in the iNaturalist 2019 large scale species classification competition, and our code is open-source and available at https://github.com/Megvii-Nanjing/BBN.

Item-based collaborative filtering (ICF) has been widely used in industrial applications such as recommender system and online advertising. It models users preference on target items by the items they have interacted with. Recent models use methods such as attention mechanism and deep neural network to learn the user representation and scoring function more accurately. However, despite their effectiveness, such models still overlook a problem that performance of ICF methods heavily depends on the quality of item representation especially the target item representation. In fact, due to the long-tail distribution in the recommendation, most item embeddings can not represent the semantics of items accurately and thus degrade the performance of current ICF methods. In this paper, we propose an enhanced representation of the target item which distills relevant information from the co-occurrence items. We design sampling strategies to sample fix number of co-occurrence items for the sake of noise reduction and computational cost. Considering the different importance of sampled items to the target item, we apply attention mechanism to selectively adopt the semantic information of the sampled items. Our proposed Co-occurrence based Enhanced Representation model (CER) learns the scoring function by a deep neural network with the attentive user representation and fusion of raw representation and enhanced representation of target item as input. With the enhanced representation, CER has stronger representation power for the tail items compared to the state-of-the-art ICF methods. Extensive experiments on two public benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of CER.
Recommenders personalize the web content by typically using collaborative filtering to relate users (or items) based on explicit feedback, e.g., ratings. The difficulty of collecting this feedback has recently motivated to consider implicit feedback (e.g., item consumption along with the corresponding time). In this paper, we introduce the notion of consumed item pack (CIP) which enables to link users (or items) based on their implicit analogous consumption behavior. Our proposal is generic, and we show that it captures three novel implicit recommenders: a user-based (CIP-U), an item-based (CIP-I), and a word embedding-based (DEEPCIP), as well as a state-of-the-art technique using implicit feedback (FISM). We show that our recommenders handle incremental updates incorporating freshly consumed items. We demonstrate that all three recommenders provide a recommendation quality that is competitive with state-of-the-art ones, including one incorporating both explicit and implicit feedback.
