We show that while orbital magnetic field and disorder, acting individually weaken superconductivity, acting together they produce an intriguing evolution of a two-dimensional type-II s-wave superconductor. For weak disorder, the critical field H_c at which the superfluid density collapses is coincident with the field at which the superconducting energy gap gets suppressed. However, with increasing disorder these two fields diverge from each other creating a pseudogap region. The nature of vortices also transform from Abrikosov vortices with a metallic core for weak disorder to Josephson vortices with gapped and insulating cores for higher disorder. Our results naturally explain two outstanding puzzles: (1) the gigantic magnetoresistance peak observed as a function of magnetic field in thin disordered superconducting films; and (2) the disappearance of the celebrated zero-bias Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon peak in disordered superconductors.

We report the evolution of superconducting properties as a function of disorder in homogeneously disordered epitaxial NbN thin films grown on (100) MgO substrates, studied through a combination of electrical transport, Hall Effect and tunneling measurements. The thickness of all our films are >50nm much larger than the coherence length ~5nm. The effective disorder in different films encompasses a large range, with the Ioffe-Regel parameter varying in the range kFl~1.38-8.77. Tunneling measurements on films with different disorder reveals that for films with large disorder the bulk superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is not associated with a vanishing of the superconducting energy gap, but rather a large broadening of the superconducting density of states. Our results provide strong evidence of the loss of superconductivity via phase-fluctuations in a disordered s-wave superconductor.
We have studied the thickness-induced superconductor-to-insulator transition in the presence of a magnetic field for a-NbSi thin films. Analyzing the critical behavior of this system within the dirty boson model, we have found a critical exponents product of $ u_d z$ > 0.4. The corresponding phase diagram in the (H,d) plane is inferred. This small exponent product as well as the non-universal value of the critical resistance found at the transition call for further investigations in order to thoroughly understand these transitions.
In this communication, we numerically studied disordered quantum transport in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator-superconductor junction based on the effective edge model approach. In particular, we focus on the parameter regime with the free mean path due to elastic scattering much smaller than the sample size and discuss disordered transport behaviors in the presence of different numbers of chiral edge modes, as well as non-chiral metallic modes. Our numerical results demonstrate that the presence of multiple chiral edge modes or non-chiral metallic modes will lead to a strong Andreev conversion, giving rise to half-electron half-hole transmission through the junction structure, in sharp contrast to the suppression of Andreev conversion in the single chiral edge mode case. Our results suggest the importance of additional transport modes in the quantum anomalous Hall insulator-superconductor junction and will guide the future transport measurements.
The mechanism of the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism is one of the intriguing and challenging problems in physics. Theory has predicted that the ferromagnetic order can coexist with the superconducting order in the form of a spontaneous vortex phase in which magnetic vortices nucleate in the absence of an external field. However, there has been no rigorous demonstration of spontaneous vortices by bulk magnetic measurements. Here we show the results of experimental observations of spontaneous vortices using a superconductor/ferromagnet fractal nanocomposite, in which superconducting MgB2 and ferromagnetic nanograins are dispersedly embedded in the normal matrix to realize the remote electromagnetic interaction and also to induce a long-range Josephson coupling. We found from bulk magnetization measurements that the sample with nonzero remanent magnetization exhibits the magnetic behaviors which are fully consistent with a spontaneous vortex scenario predicted theoretically for magnetic inclusions in a superconducting material. The resulting spontaneous vortex state is in equilibrium and coexists surprisingly with a Meissner state (complete shielding of an external magnetic field). The present observation not only reveals the evolution process of the spontaneous vortices in superconductor/ferromagnet hybrids, but it also sheds light on the role of the fractal disorder and structural heterogeneity on the vortex nucleation under the influence of Josephson superconducting currents.
We report B_c2 data for LaO_{0.9}F_{0.1}FeAs_{1-delta} in a wide T and field range up to 60 Tesla. The large slope of B_c2 approx ~ -6 Tesla/K near an improved T_c = 28.5 K of the in-plane B_c2(T) contrasts with a flattening starting at 23 K above 30 Tesla we regard as the onset of Pauli-limited behavior (PLB) with B_c2(0) about 65 Tesla. We interpret a similar hitherto unexplained flattening of the B_c2(T) curves reported for at least three other disordered closely related systems as also as a manifestation of PLB. Their Maki parameters have been estimated analyzing their B_c2(T) data within the WHH approach. The pronounced PLB of (Ba,K)Fe_2As_2 single crystals from a tin-flux is attributed also to a significant As deficiency. Consequences of our results are discussed in terms of disorder effects within conventional (CSC) and unconventional superconductivity (USC). USC scenarios with nodes on individual Fermi surface sheets (FSS), can be discarded for our samples. The increase of dB_c2/dT|_{T_c} by sizeable disorder provides evidence for an important intraband (intra-FSS) contribution to the orbital upper critical field. We suggest that it can be ascribed either to an impurity driven transition from s_{+-} USC to CSC of an extended s_{++}-wave state or to a stabilized s_{+-}-state provided As-vacancies cause predominantly strong intraband scattering in the unitary limit. We compare our results with B_c2 data from the literature with no PLB for fields below 60 to 70 Tesla probed so far. A novel disorder related scenario of a complex interplay of SC with two different competing magnetic instabilities is suggested.
