Using THz spectroscopy, we show that the spin-wave spectrum of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ in its high-field canted antiferromagnetic state is well described by a spin model that violates rhombohedral symmetry. We demonstrate that the monoclinic distortion of the canted antiferromagnetic state is induced by the single-ion magnetoelastic coupling between the lattice and the two nearly anti-parallel spins. The revised spin model for BiFeO$_3$ contains two new single-ion anisotropy terms that violate rhombohedral symmetry and depend on the direction of the magnetic field.

We have studied the magnetic field dependence of far-infrared active magnetic modes in a single ferroelectric domain BFO/ crystal at low temperature. The modes soften close to the critical field of 18.8,T along the [001] (pseudocubic) axis, where the cycloidal structure changes to the homogeneous canted antiferromagnetic state and a new strong mode with linear field dependence appears that persists at least up to 31,T. A microscopic model that includes two DM/ interactions and easy-axis anisotropy describes closely both the zero-field spectroscopic modes as well as their splitting and evolution in a magnetic field. The good agreement of theory with experiment suggests that the proposed model provides the foundation for future technological applications of this multiferroic material.
Single crystal neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, bulk magnetization measurements, and first-principles calculations are used to investigate the magnetic properties of the honeycomb lattice $rm Tb_2Ir_3Ga_9$. While the $Rln2$ magnetic contribution to the low-temperature entropy indicates a $rm J_{eff}=1/2$ moment for the lowest-energy crystal-field doublet, the Tb$^{3+}$ ions form a canted antiferromagnetic structure below 12.5 K. Due to the Dzyalloshinskii-Moriya interactions, the Tb moments in the $ab$ plane are slightly canted towards $b$ by $6^circ$ with a canted moment of 1.22 $mu_{rm B} $ per formula unit. A minimal $xxz$ spin Hamiltonian is used to simultaneously fit the spin-wave frequencies along the high symmetry directions and the field dependence of the magnetization along the three crystallographic axes. Long-range magnetic interactions for both in-plane and out-of-plane couplings up to the second nearest neighbors are needed to account for the observed static and dynamic properties. The $z$ component of the exchange interactions between Tb moments are larger than the $x$ and $y$ components. This compound also exhibits bond-dependent exchange with negligible nearest exchange coupling between moments parallel and perpendicular to the 4$f$ orbitals. Despite the $J_{{rm eff}}=1/2$ moments, the spin Hamiltonian is denominated by a large in-plane anisotropy $K_z sim -1$ meV. DFT calculations confirm the antiferromagnetic ground state and the substantial inter-plane coupling at larger Tb-Tb distances.
The interactions between elementary excitations such as phonons, plasmons, magnons, or particle-hole pairs, drive emergent functionalities and electronic instabilities such as multiferroic behaviour, anomalous thermoelectric properties, polar order, or superconductivity. Whereas various hybrid excitations have been studied extensively, the feed-back of prototypical elementary excitations on the crystal electric fields (CEF), defining the environment in which the elementary excitations arise, has been explored for very strong coupling only. We report high-resolution neutron spectroscopy and ab-initio phonon calculations of {ceaual}, an archetypal fluctuating valence compound. The high resolution of our data allows us to quantify the energy scales of three coupling mechanisms between phonons, CEF-split localized 4f electron states, and conduction electrons. Although these interactions do not appear to be atypically strong for this class of materials, we resolve, for the first time, a profound renormalization of low-energy quasiparticle excitations on all levels. The key anomalies of the spectrum we observe comprise (1) the formation of a CEF-phonon bound state with a comparatively low density of acoustic phonons reminiscent of vibronic modes observed in other materials, where they require a pronounced abundance of optical phonons, (2) an anti-crossing of CEF states and acoustic phonons, and (3) a strong broadening of CEF states due to the hybridization with more itinerant excitations. The fact that all of these features are well resolved in CeAuAl$_3$ suggests that similar hybrid excitations should also be dominant in a large family of related materials. This promises a predictive understanding towards the discovery of new magneto-elastic functionalities and instabilities.
The unconventional electronic ground state of Sr$_3$IrRuO$_7$ is explored via resonant x-ray scattering techniques and angle-resolved photoemission measurements. As the Ru content approaches $x=0.5$ in Sr$_3$(Ir$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$O$_7$, intermediate to the $J_{eff}=1/2$ Mott state in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and the quantum critical metal in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, a thermodynamically distinct metallic state emerges. The electronic structure of this intermediate phase lacks coherent quasiparticles, and charge transport exhibits a linear temperature dependence over a wide range of temperatures. Spin dynamics associated with the long-range antiferromagnetism of this phase show nearly local, overdamped magnetic excitations and an anomalously large energy scale of 200 meV---an energy far in excess of exchange energies present within either the Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ or Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ solid-solution endpoints. Overdamped quasiparticle dynamics driven by strong spin-charge coupling are proposed to explain the incoherent spectral features of the strange metal state in Sr$_3$IrRuO$_7$.
We have performed Raman scattering investigations on the high energy magnetic excitations in a BiFeO$_3$ single crystal as a function of both temperature and laser excitation energy. A strong feature observed at 1250 cm$^{-1}$ in the Raman spectra has been previously assigned to two phonon overtone. We show here that its unusual frequency shift with the excitation energy and its asymmetric temperature dependent Fano lineshape reveal a strong coupling to magnetic excitations. In the same energy range, we have also identified the two-magnon excitation with a temperature dependence very similar to $alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ hematite.
