Atomic-scale investigation on mechanical behaviors is highly necessary to fully understand the fracture mechanics especially of brittle materials, which are determined by atomic-scale phenomena (e.g., lattice trapping). Here, exfoliated anisotropic rhenium disulfide (ReS2) flakes are used to investigate atomic-scale crack propagation depending on the propagation directions. While the conventional strain-stress curves exhibit a strong anisotropy depending on the cleavage direction of ReS2, but our experimental results show a reduced cleavage anisotropy due to the lattice reconstruction in [100] cracking with high resistance to fracture. In other words, [010] and [110] cracks with low barriers to cleavage exhibit the ultimate sharpness of the crack tip without plastic deformation, whereas [100] cracks drive lattice rotation on one side of the crack, leading to a non-flat grain boundary formation. Finally, crystallographic reconstruction associated with the high lattice randomness of two-dimensional materials drives to a modified cleavage tendency, further indicating the importance of atomic-scale studies for a complete understanding of the mechanics.

By means of first-principles calculations, the structural stability, mechanical properties and electronic structure of the newly synthesized incompressible Re2C, Re2N, Re3N and an analogous compound Re3C have been investigated. Our results agree well with the available experimental and theoretical data. The proposed Re3C is shown to be energetically, mechanically and dynamically stable and also incompressible. Furthermore, it is suggested that the incompressibility of these compounds is originated from the strong covalent bonding character with the hybridization of 5d orbital of Re and the 2p orbital of C or N, and a zigzag topology of interconnected bonds, e.g., Re-Re, Re-C or Re-N bonding.

Boron nitride structures have excellent thermal and chemical stabilities. Based on state-of-art theoretical calculations, we propose a wide gap semiconducting BN crystal with a three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb structure (Hp-BN), which is both mechanically and thermodynamically stable. Our calculated results show that Hp-BN has a higher bulk modulus and a smaller energy gap as compared to c-BN. Moreover, due to the unique bonding structure, Hp-BN exhibits anisotropic electronic and optical properties. It has great adsorption in the ultraviolet region, but it is highly transparent in the visible and infrared region, suggesting that the Hp-BN crystal could have potential applications in electronic and optical devices.
Molybdenum trioxide (MoO$_3$) in-plane anisotropy has increasingly attracted the attention of the scientific community in the last few years. Many of the observed in-plane anisotropic properties stem from the anisotropic refractive index and elastic constants of the material but a comprehensive analysis of these fundamental properties is still lacking. Here we employ Raman and micro-reflectance measurements, using polarized light, to determine the angular dependence of the refractive index of thin MoO$_3$ flakes and we study the directional dependence of the MoO$_3$ Youngs modulus using the buckling metrology method. We found that MoO$_3$ displays one of the largest in-plane anisotropic mechanical properties reported for 2D materials so far.
Anisotropic materials, with orientation-dependent properties, have attracted more and more attention due to their compelling tunable and flexible performance in electronic and optomechanical devices. So far, two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus shows the largest known anisotropic behavior, which is highly desired for synaptic and neuromorphic devices, multifunctional directional memories, and even polarization-sensitive photodetector, whereas it is unstable at ambient conditions. Recently, 2D few-layered As2S3 with superior chemical stability was successfully exfoliated in experiments. However, the electronic and mechanical properties of monolayer and bilayer As2S3 is still lacking. Here, we report the large anisotropic electronic and mechanical properties of As2S3 systems through first-principles calculations and general angle-dependent Hookes law. Monolayer and bilayer As2S3 exhibit anisotropic factors of Youngs modulus of 3.15 and 3.32, respectively, which are larger than the black phosphorous with experimentally confirmed and an anisotropic factor of 2. This study provides an effective route to flexible orientation-dependent nanoelectronics, nanomechanics, and offers implications in promoting related experimental investigations.
We evaluate the effect of mechanical exfoliation of van der Waals materials on crystallographic orientations of the resulting flakes. Flakes originating from a single crystal of graphite, whose orientation is confirmed using STM, are studied using facet orientations and electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD). While facets exhibit a wide distribution of angles after a single round of exfoliation ($ sigma approx 5^o $), EBSD shows that the true crystallographic orientations are more narrowly distributed ($ sigma approx 1.5^o $), and facets have an approximately error from the true orientation. Furthermore, we find that the majority of graphite fractures are along armchair lines, and that the cleavage process results in an increase of the zigzag lines portion. Our results place values on the rotation caused by a single round of the exfoliation process, and suggest that when a 1-2 degree precision is necessary, the orientation of a flake can be gauged by the orientation of the macroscopic single crystal from which it was exfoliated.
