We construct supersymmetric $AdS_3times Sigma$ solutions of minimal gauged supergravity in $D=5$, where $Sigma$ is a two-dimensional orbifold known as a spindle. Remarkably, these uplift on $S^5$, or more generally on any regular Sasaki-Einstein manifold, to smooth solutions of type IIB supergravity. The solutions are dual to $d=2$, $mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ SCFTs and we show that the central charge for the gravity solution agrees with a field theory calculation associated with D3-branes wrapped on $Sigma$. Unlike for smooth $Sigma$ the superconformal R-symmetry mixes with the $U(1)$ isometry of the spindle.

We construct supersymmetric $AdS_5times Sigma$ solutions of $D=7$ gauged supergravity, where $Sigma$ is a two-dimensional orbifold known as a spindle. These uplift on $S^4$ to solutions of $D=11$ supergravity which have orbifold singularites. We argue that the solutions are dual to $d=4$, $mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs that arise from $N$ M5-branes wrapped on a spindle, embedded as a holomorphic curve inside a Calabi-Yau three-fold. In contrast to the usual topological twist solutions, the superconformal R-symmetry mixes with the isometry of the spindle in the IR, and we verify this via a field theory calculation, as well as reproducing the gravity formula for the central charge.
In this note we outline the arguments against the ten-dimensional consistency of the simplest types of KKLT de Sitter vacua, as given in arXiv:1707.08678. We comment on parametrization proposals within four-dimensional supergravity and express our disagreement with the recent criticism by the authors of arXiv:1808.09428.
The relative coefficients of higher derivative interactions of the IIB effective action of the form C^4, (D F_5)^4, F_5^8, ... (where C is the Weyl tensor and F_5 is the five-form field strength) are motivated by supersymmetry arguments. It is shown that the classical supergravity solution for N parallel D3-branes is unaltered by this combination of terms. The non-vanishing of zeroC^2 in this background (where zero C is the background value of the Weyl tensor) leads to effective O(1/alpha) interactions, such as C^2 and Lambda^8 (where Lambda is the dilatino). These contain D-instanton contributions in addition to tree and one-loop terms. The near horizon limit of the N D3-brane system describes a multi-AdS_5xS^5 geometry that is dual to calN=4 SU(N) Yang-Mills theory spontaneously broken to S(U(M_1)x...xU(M_r)). Here, the N D3-branes are grouped into r coincident bunches with M_r in each group, with M_r/N = m_r fixed as N goes to infinity. The boundary correlation function of eight Lambdas is constructed explicitly. The second part of the paper considers effects of a constrained instanton in this large-N Yang-Mills theory by an extension of the analysis of Dorey, Hollowood and Khoze of the one-instanton measure at finite N. This makes precise the correspondence with the supergravity D-instanton measure at leading order in the 1/N expansion. However, the duality between instanton-induced correlation functions in Yang-Mills theory and the dual supergravity is somewhat obscured by complications relating to the structure of constrained instantons.
We show that M-theory admits a supersymmetric compactification to the Godel universe of the form Godel3 x S2 x CY3. We interpret this geometry as coming from the backreaction of M2-branes wrapping the S2 in an AdS3 x S2 x CY3 flux compactification. In the black hole deconstruction proposal similar states give rise to the entropy of a D4-D0 black hole. The system is effectively described by a three-dimensional theory consisting of an axion-dilaton coupled to gravity with a negative cosmological constant. Other embeddings of the three-dimensional theory imply similar supersymmetric Godel compactifications of type IIA/IIB string theory and F-theory.
We construct a consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of $D=11$ supergravity on $Sigma_2times S^4$, where $Sigma_2=S^2,mathbb{R}^2$ or $H^2$, or a quotient thereof, at the level of the bosonic fields. The result is a gauged $N=4$, $D=5$ supergravity theory coupled to three vector multiplets, with the gauging lying in an $SO(2)times SE(3)subset SO(5,3)$ subgroup of the $SO(1,1)times SO(5,3)$ global symmetry group of the ungauged theory. For $Sigma_2=H^2$, the $D=5$ theory has a maximally supersymmetric $AdS_5$ vacuum which uplifts to the known solution of $D=11$ supergravity corresponding to M5-branes wrapping a Riemann surface with genus greater than one and dual to an $N=2$ SCFT in $d=4$. For $Sigma_2=S^2$, we find two $AdS_5$ solutions, one of which is new, and both of which are unstable. There is an additional subtruncation to an $N=2$ gauged supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets, with very special real manifold $SO(1,1)times SO(1,1)$, and a single hypermultiplet, with quaternionic Kahler manifold $SU(2,1)/S[U(2)times U(1)]$ and gauging associated with an $SO(2)timesmathbb{R}subset SU(2,1)$ subgroup.
