The aim of this work is to develop a prototype of integrated detector system to monitor environmental hazard: appearance of flames, smoke, sparks or dangerous gases (flammable, toxic, radioactive). We built and successfully tested prototypes of all components of the system. Our sensors are based on established CERN technologies and have superior characteristics, featuring between 10 to 1000 times higher sensitivity than the best commercial sensors. The final version of our device would consist of multifunctional sensors assembled in a single unit; each sensor will perform a specific task and deliver information to a common computing centre via cellular or satellite phone protocols.

We have developed a novel technique for the measurement of the avalanche fluctuation of gaseous detectors using a UV laser. The technique is simple and requires a short data-taking time of about ten minutes. Furthermore, it is applicable for relatively low gas gains. Our experimental setup as well as the measurement principle, and the results obtained with a stack of Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) operated in several gas mixtures are presented.

Currently a revolution is taking place in the development of gaseous detectors of photons and particles. Parallel plate-type and wire-type detectors which dominated for years in high energy and space flight experiments are now being replaced by recently invented Micropattern gaseous detectors. We will now review the main achievements in this field and discuss the most promising directions in future developments and applications.

We have developed a cost effective technology for manufacturing various layouts of micropattern gaseous detectors for a wide range of applications. Such devices feature resistive electrodes interfaced to a network of thin readout strips/electrodes. The following three examples of such innovative designs and their applications will be presented: a prototype of a novel double-phase LAr detector with a CsI photocathode immersed inside the LAr, a CsI-RICH detector prototype for ALICE upgrade and GEM-like sensors for environmental safety/security applications.
There are several proposals and projects today for building LXe Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) for dark matter search. An important element of these TPCs are the photomultipliers operating either inside LXe or in vapors above the liquid. We have recently demonstrated that photosensitive gaseous detectors (wire type and hole-type) can operate perfectly well until temperatures of LN2. In this paper results of systematic studies of operation of the photosensitive version of these detectors (combined with reflective or semi-transparent CsI photocathodes) in the temperature interval of 300-150 K are presented. In particular, it was demonstrated that both sealed and flushed by a gas detectors could operate at a quite stable fashion in a year/time scale. Obtained results, in particular the long-term stability of photosensitive gaseous detectors, strongly indicate that they can be cheap and simple alternatives to photomultipliers or avalanche solid-state detectors in LXe TPC applications.

Position sensitive detectors based on gaseous scintillation proportional counters with Anger-type readout are being used in several research areas such as neutron detection, search for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay. Design and optimization of such detectors are complex and time consuming tasks. Simulations, while being a powerful tool, strongly depend on the light transport models and demand accurate knowledge of many parameters, which are often not available. Here we describe an alternative approach based on the experimental evaluation of a detector using an isotropic point-like light source with precisely controllable light emission properties, installed on a 3D positioning system. The results obtained with the developed setup at validation conditions, when the scattered light is strongly suppressed, show good agreement with simulations.
