A major concern in cloud/edge storage systems is serving a large number of users simultaneously. The service rate region is introduced recently as an important performance metric for coded distributed systems, which is defined as the set of all data access requests that can be simultaneously handled by the system. This paper studies the problem of designing a coded distributed storage system storing k files where a desired service rate region R of the system is given and the goal is 1) to determine the minimum number of storage nodes n(R) (or a lower bound on n(R)) for serving all demand vectors inside the set R and 2) to design the most storage-efficient redundancy scheme with the service rate region covering R. Towards this goal, we propose three general lower bounds for n(R). Also, for k=2, we characterize n(R), i.e., we show that the proposed lower bounds are tight via designing a novel storage-efficient redundancy scheme with n(R) storage nodes and the service rate region covering R.

Redundant storage maintains the performance of distributed systems under various forms of uncertainty. This paper considers the uncertainty in node access and download service. We consider two access models under two download service models. In one access model, a user can access each node with a fixed probability, and in the other, a user can access a random fixed-size subset of nodes. We consider two download service models. In the first (small file) model, the randomness associated with the file size is negligible. In the second (large file) model, randomness is associated with both the file size and the systems operations. We focus on the service rate of the system. For a fixed redundancy level, the systems service rate is determined by the allocation of coded chunks over the storage nodes. We consider quasi-uniform allocations, where coded content is uniformly spread among a subset of nodes. The question we address asks what the size of this subset (spreading) should be. We show that in the small file model, concentrating the coded content to a minimum-size subset is universally optimal. For the large file model, the optimal spreading depends on the system parameters. These conclusions hold for both access models.
A partially cooperative relay broadcast channel (RBC) is a three-node network with one source node and two destination nodes (destinations 1 and 2) where destination 1 can act as a relay to assist destination 2. Inner and outer bounds on the capacity region of the discrete memoryless partially cooperative RBC are obtained. When the relay function is disabled, the inner and outer bounds reduce to new bounds on the capacity region of broadcast channels. Four classes of RBCs are studied in detail. For the partially cooperative RBC with degraded message sets, inner and outer bounds are obtained. For the semideterministic partially cooperative RBC and the orthogonal partially cooperative RBC, the capacity regions are established. For the parallel partially cooperative RBC with unmatched degraded subchannels, the capacity region is established for the case of degraded message sets. The capacity is also established when the source node has only a private message for destination 2, i.e., the channel reduces to a parallel relay channel with unmatched degraded subchannels.
We consider the problem of private information retrieval from $N$ emph{storage-constrained} databases. In this problem, a user wishes to retrieve a single message out of $M$ messages (of size $L$) without revealing any information about the identity of the message to individual databases. Each database stores $mu ML$ symbols, i.e., a $mu$ fraction of the entire library, where $frac{1}{N} leq mu leq 1$. Our goal is to characterize the optimal tradeoff curve for the storage cost (captured by $mu$) and the normalized download cost ($D/L$). We show that the download cost can be reduced by employing a hybrid storage scheme that combines emph{MDS coding} ideas with emph{uncoded partial replication} ideas. When there is no coding, our scheme reduces to Attia-Kumar-Tandon storage scheme, which was initially introduced by Maddah-Ali-Niesen in the context of the caching problem, and when there is no uncoded partial replication, our scheme reduces to Banawan-Ulukus storage scheme; in general, our scheme outperforms both.
In a bi-directional relay channel, two nodes wish to exchange independent messages over a shared wireless half-duplex channel with the help of a relay. In this paper, we derive achievable rate regions for four new half-duplex protocols and compare these to four existing half-duplex protocols and outer bounds. In time, our protocols consist of either two or three phases. In the two phase protocols, both users simultaneously transmit during the first phase and the relay alone transmits during the second phase, while in the three phase protocol the two users sequentially transmit followed by a transmission from the relay. The relay may forward information in one of four manners; we outline existing Amplify and Forward (AF), Decode and Forward (DF) and Compress and Forward (CF) relaying schemes and introduce the novel Mixed Forward scheme. The latter is a combination of CF in one direction and DF in the other. We derive achievable rate regions for the CF and Mixed relaying schemes for the two and three phase protocols. In the last part of this work we provide a comprehensive treatment of 8 possible half-duplex bi-directional relaying protocols in Gaussian noise, obtaining their respective achievable rate regions, outer bounds, and their relative performance under different SNR and relay geometries.
In this paper we study the problem of storing reliably an archive of versioned data. Specifically, we focus on systems where the differences (deltas) between subseque
