We studied the symmetry of magnetic properties and the resulting magnetic textures in ultra-thin epitaxial Au$_{0.67}$Pt$_{0.33}$/Co/W, a model system exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and interface Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). As a peculiar feature, the C$_mathrm{2v}$ crystal symmetry induced by the Co/W interface results in an additional uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy in the cobalt layer. Photoemission electron microscopy with magnetic sensitivity reveals the formation of self-organized magnetic stripe domains oriented parallel to the hard in-plane magnetization axis. We attribute this behavior to the lower domain wall energy when oriented along this axis, where both the DMI and the in-plane magnetic anisotropy favor a N{e}el domain wall configuration. The anisotropic domain wall energy also leads to the formation of elliptical skyrmion bubbles in a weak out-of-plane magnetic field.

We have used Brillouin Light Scattering spectroscopy to independently determine the in-plane Magneto-Crystalline Anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) in out-of-plane magnetized Au/Co/W(110). We found that the DMI strength is 2-3 times larger along the bcc$[bar{1}10]$ than along the bcc$[001]$ direction. We use analytical considerations to illustrate the relationship between the crystal symmetry of the stack and the anisotropy of microscopic DMI. Such an anisotropic DMI is the first step to realize isolated elliptical skyrmions or anti-skyrmions in thin film systems with $C_{2v}$ symmetry.

Epitaxial Y3Fe5O12 thin films have been deposited by off-axis sputtering, which exhibit excellent crystalline quality, enabling observation of large spin pumping signals in Pt/Y3Fe5O12 and W/Y3Fe5O12 bilayers driven by cavity ferromagnetic resonance. The inverse spin Hall voltages reach 2.10 mV and -5.26 mV in 5-mm long Pt/Y3Fe5O12 and W/Y3Fe5O12 bilayers, respectively, excited by a radio-frequency magnetic field of 0.3 Oe. From the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth broadening, the interfacial spin mixing conductance of 4.56E14 {Omega}-1m-2 and 2.30E14 {Omega}-1m-2 are obtained for Pt/Y3Fe5O12 and W/Y3Fe5O12 bilayers, respectively.
B20 phase magnetic materials, such as FeGe, have been of significant interests in recent years because they enable magnetic skyrmions, which can potentially lead to low energy cost spintronic applications. One major effort in this emerging field is the stabilization of skyrmions at room temperature and zero external magnetic field. We report the growth of phase-pure FeGe epitaxial thin films on Si(111) substrates by ultrahigh vacuum off-axis sputtering. The high crystalline quality of the FeGe films was confirmed by x-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Hall effect measurements reveal strong topological Hall effect after subtracting out the ordinary and anomalous Hall effects, demonstrating the formation of high density skyrmions in FeGe films between 5 and 275 K. In particular, substantial topological Hall effect was observed at zero magnetic field, showing a robust skyrmion phase without the need of an external magnetic field.
We report on the observation of metallic behavior in thin films of oxygen-deficient SrTiO$_3$ - down to 9 unit cells - when coherently strained on (001) SrTiO$_3$ or DyScO$_3$-buffered (001) SrTiO$_3$ substrates. These films have carrier concentrations of up to 2$times10^{22}$ cm$^{-3}$ and mobilities of up to 19,000 cm$^2$/V-s at 2 K. There exists a non-conducting layer in our SrTiO$_{3-delta}$ films that is larger in films with lower carrier concentrations. This non-conducting layer can be attributed to a surface depletion layer due to a Fermi level pinning potential. The depletion width, transport, and structural properties are not greatly affected by the insertion of a DyScO$_3$ buffer between the SrTiO$_3$ film and SrTiO$_3$ substrate.
We studied the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties of compressive strained and unstrained BiMnO3 thin films grown by rf-magnetron sputtering. BiMnO3 samples exhibit a 2D cube-on-cube growth mode and a pseudo-cubic struc-ture up to a thickness of 15 nm and of 25 nm when deposited on (001) SrTiO3 and (110) DyScO3, respectively. Above these thicknesses we observe a switching to a 3D island growth and a simultaneous structural change to a monoclinic structure characterized by a (00l) orientation of the monoclinic unit cell. While ferromagnetism is observed below Tc = 100 K for all samples, signatures of room temperature ferroelectricity were found only in the pseudo-cubic ultra-thin films, indicating a correlation between electronic and structural orders.
