Many successful games rely heavily on data analytics to understand players and inform design. Popular methodologies focus on machine learning and statistical analysis of aggregated data. While effective in extracting information regarding player action, much of the context regarding when and how those actions occurred is lost. Qualitative methods allow researchers to examine context and derive meaningful explanations about the goals and motivations behind player behavior, but are difficult to scale. In this paper, we build on previous work by combining two existing methodologies: Interactive Behavior Analytics (IBA) and sequence analysis (SA), in order to create a novel, mixed methods, human-in-the-loop data analysis methodology that uses behavioral labels and visualizations to allow analysts to examine player behavior in a way that is context sensitive, scalable, and generalizable. We present the methodology along with a case study demonstrating how it can be used to analyze behavioral patterns of teamwork in the popular multiplayer game Defense of the Ancients 2 (DotA 2).

Understanding event and event-centered commonsense reasoning are crucial for natural language processing (NLP). Given an observed event, it is trivial for human to infer its intents and effects, while this type of If-Then reasoning still remains challenging for NLP systems. To facilitate this, a If-Then commonsense reasoning dataset Atomic is proposed, together with an RNN-based Seq2Seq model to conduct such reasoning. However, two fundamental problems still need to be addressed: first, the intents of an event may be multiple, while the generations of RNN-based Seq2Seq models are always semantically close; second, external knowledge of the event background may be necessary for understanding events and conducting the If-Then reasoning. To address these issues, we propose a novel context-aware variational autoencoder effectively learning event background information to guide the If-Then reasoning. Experimental results show that our approach improves the accuracy and diversity of inferences compared with state-of-the-art baseline methods.
People have the ability to make sensible assumptions about other peoples emotional states by being sympathetic, and because of our common sense of knowledge and the ability to think visually. Over the years, much research has been done on providing machines with the ability to detect human emotions and to develop automated emotional intelligence systems. The computers ability to detect human emotions is gaining popularity in creating sensitive systems such as learning environments, health care systems and real-world. Improving peoples health has been the subject of much research. This paper describes the formation as conceptual evidence of emotional acquisition and control in intelligent health settings. The authors of this paper aim for an unconventional approach with a friendly look to get emotional scenarios from the system to establish a functional, non-intrusive and emotionally-sensitive environment where users can do their normal activities naturally and see the program only when pleasant mood activating services are received. The context-sensitive system interacts with users to detect and differentiate emotions through facial expressions or speech recognition, to make music recommendations and mood color treatments with the services installed on their IoT devices.
Video action detection approaches usually conduct actor-centric action recognition over RoI-pooled features following the standard pipeline of Faster-RCNN. In this work, we first empirically find the recognition accuracy is highly correlated with the bounding box size of an actor, and thus higher resolution of actors contributes to better performance. However, video models require dense sampling in time to achieve accurate recognition. To fit in GPU memory, the frames to backbone network must be kept low-resolution, resulting in a coarse feature map in RoI-Pooling layer. Thus, we revisit RCNN for actor-centric action recognition via cropping and resizing image patches around actors before feature extraction with I3D deep network. Moreover, we found that expanding actor bounding boxes slightly and fusing the context features can further boost the performance. Consequently, we develop a surpringly effective baseline (Context-Aware RCNN) and it achieves new state-of-the-art results on two challenging action detection benchmarks of AVA and JHMDB. Our observations challenge the conventional wisdom of RoI-Pooling based pipeline and encourage researchers rethink the importance of resolution in actor-centric action recognition. Our approach can serve as a strong baseline for video action detection and is expected to inspire new ideas for this filed. The code is available at url{https://github.com/MCG-NJU/CRCNN-Action}.
We present an approach utilizing Topological Data Analysis to study the structure of face poses used in affective computing, i.e., the process of recognizing human emotion. The approach uses a conditional comparison of different emotions, both respective and irrespective of time, with multiple topological distance metrics, dimension reduction techniques, and face subsections (e.g., eyes, nose, mouth, etc.). The results confirm that our topology-based approach captures known patterns, distinctions between emotions, and distinctions between individuals, which is an important step towards more robust and explainable emotion recognition by machines.
Monitoring of students behavior in school needs further consideration in order to lessen the number of casualties in every term. The study designs a data driven decision support on students behavior utilizing Fuzzy Based Approach. The study successfully produces common behavioral problems of the student and able to give interventions for the improvement of students behavior. Student behavioral problems identified were absenteeism, tardiness and poor academic performance.
