A longstanding open problem in condensed matter physics is whether or not a strongly disordered interacting insulator can be mapped to a system of effectively non-interacting localized excitations. We investigate this issue on the insulating side of the 3D metal-insulator transition (MIT) in phosphorus doped silicon using the new technique of terahertz two dimensional coherent spectroscopy. Despite the intrinsically disordered nature of these materials, we observe coherent excitations and strong photon echoes that provide us with a powerful method for the study of their decay processes. We extract the first measurements of energy relaxation ($T_1$) and decoherence ($T_2$) times close to the MIT in this classic system. We observe that (i) both relaxation rates are linear in excitation frequency with a slope close to unity, (ii) the energy relaxation timescale $T_1$ counterintuitively increases with increasing temperature and (iii) the coherence relaxation timescale $T_2$ has little temperature dependence between 5 K and 25 K, but counterintuitively increases as the material is doped towards the MIT. We argue that these features imply that (a) the system behaves as a well isolated electronic system on the timescales of interest, and (b) relaxation is controlled by electron-electron interactions. We discuss the potential relaxation channels that may explain the behavior. Our observations constitute a qualitatively new phenomenology, driven by the interplay of strong disorder and strong electron-electron interactions, which we dub the marginal Fermi glass.

We investigate the interplay of Coulomb interactions and correlated disorder in pseudospin-3/2 semimetals, which exhibit birefringent spectra in the absence of interactions. Coulomb interactions drive the system to a marginal Fermi liquid, both for the two-dimensional (2d) and three-dimensional (3d) cases. Short-ranged correlated disorder and a power-law correlated disorder have the same engineering dimension as the Coulomb term, for the 2d and 3d systems, respectively, in a renormalization group (RG) sense. In order to analyze the combined effects of these two kinds of interactions, we apply a dimensional regularization scheme and derive the RG flow equations. The results show that the marginal Fermi liquid phase is robust against disorder.
The interplay between geometric frustration (GF) and bond disorder is studied in the Ising kagome lattice within a cluster approach. The model considers antiferromagnetic (AF) short-range couplings and long-range intercluster disordered interactions. The replica formalism is used to obtain an effective single cluster model from where the thermodynamics is analyzed by exact diagonalization. We found that the presence of GF can introduce cluster freezing at very low levels of disorder. The system exhibits an entropy plateau followed by a large entropy drop close to the freezing temperature. In this scenario, a spin-liquid (SL) behavior prevents conventional long-range order, but an infinitesimal disorder picks out uncompensated cluster states from the multi degenerate SL regime, potentializing the intercluster disordered coupling and bringing the cluster spin-glass state. To summarize, our results suggest that the SL state combined with low levels of disorder can activate small clusters, providing hypersensitivity to the freezing process in geometrically frustrated materials and playing a key role in the glassy stabilization. We propose that this physical mechanism could be present in several geometrically frustrated materials. In particular, we discuss our results in connection to the recent experimental investigations of the Ising kagome compound Co$_3$Mg(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$.

In the 1970s a new paradigm was introduced that interacting quenched systems, such as a spin-glass, have a phase transition in which long time memory of spatial patterns is realized without spatial correlations. The principal methods to study the spin-glass transition, besides some elaborate and elegant theoretical constructions, have been numerical computer simulations and neutron spin echo measurements . We show here that the dynamical correlations of the spin-glass transition are embedded in measurements of the four-spin correlations at very long times. This information is directly available in the temporal correlations of the intensity, which encode the spin-orientation memory, obtained by the technique of resonant magnetic x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (RM- XPCS). We have implemented this method to observe and accurately characterize the critical slowing down of the spin orientation fluctuations in the classic metallic spin glass alloy Cu(Mn) over time scales of 1 to 1000 secs. Our method opens the way for studying phase transitions in systems such as spin ices, and quantum spin liquids, as well as the structural glass transition.
Pursuing fractionalized particles that do not bear properties of conventional measurable objects, exemplified by bare particles in the vacuum such as electrons and elementary excitations such as magnons, is a challenge in physics. Here we show that a machine-learning method for quantum many-body systems that has achieved state-of-the-art accuracy reveals the existence of a quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase in the region $0.49lesssim J_2/J_1lesssim0.54$ convincingly in spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg model with the nearest and next-nearest neighbor exchanges, $J_1$ and $J_2$, respectively, on the square lattice. This is achieved by combining with the cutting-edge computational schemes known as the correlation ratio and level spectroscopy methods to mitigate the finite-size effects. The quantitative one-to-one correspondence between the correlations in the ground state and the excitation spectra enables the reliable identification and estimation of the QSL and its nature. The spin excitation spectra containing both singlet and triplet gapless Dirac-like dispersions signal the emergence of gapless fractionalized spin-1/2 Dirac-type spinons in the distinctive QSL phase. Unexplored critical behavior with coexisting and dual power-law decays of N{e}el antiferromagnetic and dimer correlations is revealed. The power-law decay exponents of the two correlations differently vary with $J_2/J_1$ in the QSL phase and thus have different values except for a single point satisfying the symmetry of the two correlations. The isomorph of excitations with the cuprate $d$-wave superconductors implies a tight connection between the present QSL and superconductivity. This achievement demonstrates that the quantum-state representation using machine learning techniques, which had mostly been limited to benchmarks, is a promising tool for investigating grand challenges in quantum many-body physics.
Strongly correlated phases of matter are often described in terms of straightforward electronic patterns. This has so far been the basis for studying the Fermi-Hubbard model realized with ultracold atoms. Here, we show that artificial intelligence (AI) can provide an unbiased alternative to this paradigm for phases with subtle, or even unknown, patterns. Long- and short-range spin correlations spontaneously emerge in filters of a convolutional neural network trained on snapshots of single atomic species. In the less well-understood strange metallic phase of the model, we find that a more complex network trained on snapshots of local moments produces an effective order parameter for the non-Fermi-liquid behavior. Our technique can be employed to characterize correlations unique to other phases with no obvious order parameters or signatures in projective measurements, and has implications for science discovery through AI beyond strongly correlated systems.
