We theoretically demonstrate that dc electron flow across the junction of two-dimensional electron systems leads to excitation of edge magnetoplasmons. The threshold current for such plasmon excitation does not depend on contact effects and approaches zero for ballistic electron systems, which makes a strong distinction from the well-known Dyakonov-Shur and Cerenkov-type instabilities. We estimate the competing plasmon energy gain from dc current and loss due to electron scattering. We show that plasmon self excitation is feasible in GaAs-based heterostructures at $Tlesssim 200$ K and magnetic fields $B lesssim 10$ T.

In this paper we show that graphene surface plasmons can be excited when an electromagnetic wave packet impinges on a single metal slit covered with graphene. The excitation of the plasmons localized over the slit is revealed by characteristic peaks in the absorption spectrum. It is shown that the position of the peaks can be tuned either by the graphene doping level or by the dielectric function of the material filling the slit. The whole system forms the basis for a plasmonic sensor when the slit is filled with an analyte.
Diffraction of light at lateral inhomogenities is a central process in the near-field studies of nanoscale phenomena, especially the propagation of surface waves. Theoretical description of this process is extremely challenging due to breakdown of plane-wave methods. Here, we present and analyze an exact solution for electromagnetic wave diffraction at the linear junction between two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) with dissimilar surface conductivities. The field at the junction is a combination of three components with different spatial structure: free-field component, non-resonant edge component, and surface plasmon-polariton (SPP). We find closed-form expressions for efficiency of photon-to-plasmon conversion by the edge being the ratio of electric fields in SPP and incident wave. Particularly, the conversion efficiency can considerably exceed unity for the contact between metal and 2DES with large impedance. Our findings can be considered as a first step toward quantitative near-field microscopy of inhomogeneous systems and polaritonic interferometry.

Leakage-radiation microscopy of a thin gold film demonstrates the ability of an ensemble of fluorescent diamond nanoparticles attached onto the apex of an optical tip to serve as an efficient near-field surface-plasmon polariton launcher. The implementation of the nanodiamond-based tip in a near-field scanning optical microscope will allow for an accurate control on the launching position, thereby opening the way to scanning plasmonics.
Plasmons are usually described in terms of macroscopic quantities such as electric fields and currents. However as fundamental excitations of metals they are also quantum objects with internal structure. We demonstrate that this can induce an intrinsic dipole moment which is tied to the quantum geometry of the Hilbert space of plasmon states. This {it quantum geometric dipole} offers a unique handle for manipulation of plasmon dynamics, via density modulations and electric fields. As a concrete example we demonstrate that scattering of plasmons with non-vanishing quantum geometric dipole from impurities is non-reciprocal, skewing in different directions in a valley-dependent fashion. This internal structure can be used to control plasmon trajectories in two dimensional materials.

I theoretically investigate the response of bulk semiconductors to excitation by twisted light below the energy bandgap. To this end, I modify a well-known model of light-semiconductor interaction to account for the conservation of the lights momentum. I show that the excited states can be thought of as a superposition of slightly perturbed exciton states undergoing a complex center-of-mass motion. In addition, the absorption would occur at a slightly shifted energy (compared to plane waves) and would exhibit complex spatial patterns in the polarization and current.
