Valley polarization is amongst the most critical attributes of atomically thin materials. However, achieving a high contrast from monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has so far been challenging. In this work, a giant valley polarization contrast up to 45% from a monolayer WS2 has been achieved at room temperature by using a single chiral plasmonic nanoparticle. The increased contrast is attributed to the selective enhancement of both the excitation and the emission rate having one particular handedness of the circular polarization. The experimental results were corroborated by the optical simulation using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Additionally, the single chiral nanoparticle enabled the observation of valley-polarized luminescence with a linear excitation. Our results provide a promising pathway to enhance valley contrast from monolayer TMDs and utilize them for nanophotonic devices.

We report on scattering induced valley polarization enhancement in monolayer molybdenum disulfide. With thermally activated and charge doping introduced scattering, our sample exhibits seven? and twelve-folds of improvements respectively. This counter-intuitive effect is attributed to disruptions to valley pseudospin precession caused by rapid modulation of exciton momentum and concomitant local exchange interaction field, at time scales much shorter than the precession period. In contrast, the valley coherence is improved by thermally activated scattering, but not by charge doping induced scattering. We propose that this is due to anisotropic pseudospin scattering and generalize the Maialle-Silva-Sham model to quantitatively explain our experimental results. Our work illustrates that cleaner samples with minimal scattering, such as those carefully suspended or protected by hexagonal boron nitride, do not necessarily lead to good valley polarization. Well-controlled scattering can in fact provide an interesting approach for improving valleytronic devices.
In this letter we present photoluminescence measurements with different excitation energies on single-layer MoS$_2$ and MoSe$_2$ in order to examine the resonance behavior of the conservation of circular polarization in these transition metal dichalcogenides. We find that the circular polarization of the emitted light is conserved to 100% in MoS$_2$ and 84% / 79% (A/A$^-$ peaks) in MoSe$_2$ close to resonance. The values for MoSe$_2$ surpass any previously reported value. However, in contrast to previous predictions, the degree of circular polarization decreases clearly at energies less than the two-phonon longitudinal acoustic phonon energy above the resonance. Our findings indicate that at least two competing processes underly the depolarization of the emission in single-layer transition metal dichalcogenides.

Topological valley photonics has emerged as a new frontier in photonics with many promising applications. Previous valley boundary transport relies on kink states at internal boundaries between two topologically distinct domains. However, recent studies have revealed a novel class of topological chiral edge states (CESs) at external boundaries of valley materials, which have remained elusive in photonics. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate the topological CESs in valley photonic metamaterials (VPMMs) by accurately tuning on-site edge potentials. Moreover, the VPMMs work at deep-subwavelength scales. Thus, the supported CESs are highly confined and self-guiding without relying on a cladding layer to prevent leakage radiation. Via direct near-field measurements, we observe the bulk bandgap, the edge dispersions, and the robust edge transport passing through sharp corners, which are hallmarks of the CESs. Our work paves a way to explore novel topological edge states in valley photonics and sheds light on robust and miniaturized photonic devices.
The practical applications of chiral discrimination are usually limited by the weak chiral response of enantiomers and the high complexity of detection methods. Here, we propose to use the C lines (i.e., lines of polarization singularities) emerged in light scattering by a metal sphere to detect the chirality of small chiral particles. Using full-wave numerical simulations and analytical multipole expansions, we determined the absorption dissymmetry of the chiral particles at different positions on the C lines and found that it can be much larger than that induced by circularly polarized plane wave excitation. We uncover that the large dissymmetry factor is attributed to the asymmetric absorption of electric and magnetic dipoles induced by the C lines. The results can generate novel methods of chiral discrimination and may find applications in optical manipulations, optical sensing, and chiral quantum optics.

In the development of spin-based electronic devices, a particular challenge is the manipulation of the magnetic state with high speed and low power consumption. Although research has focused on the current-induced spin-orbit torque based on strong spin-orbit coupling, the charge-based and the torque-driven devices have fundamental limitations: Joule heating, phase mismatching and overshooting. In this work, we investigate numerically and theoretically alternative switching scenario of antiferromagnetic insulator in one-dimensional confined nanowire sandwiched with two electrodes. As the electric field could break inversion symmetry and induce Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and pseudo-dipole anisotropy, the resulting spiral texture takes symmetric or antisymmetric configuration due to additional coupling with the crystalline anisotropy. Therefore, by competing two spiral states, we show that the magnetization reversal of antiferromagnets is realized, which is valid in ferromagnetic counterpart. Our finding provides promising opportunities to realize the rapid and energy-efficient electrical manipulation of magnetization for future spin-based electronic devices.
