We theoretically study the non-linear response of interacting neutral bosonic gas in a synthetically driven one-dimensional optical lattice. In particular, we examine the bosonic analogue of electronic higher harmonic generation in a strong time-dependent synthetic vector potential manifesting itself as the synthetic electric field. We show that the vector potential can generate reasonably high harmonics in the insulating regime, while the superfluid regime exhibits only a few harmonics. In the insulating regime, the number of harmonics increases with the increase in the strength of the vector potential. This originates primarily due to the field-driven resonant and non-resonant excitations in the neutral Mott state and their recombination with the ground state. If the repulsive interaction between two atoms ($U$) is close to the strength of the gauge potential ($A_0$), the resonant quasiparticle-quasihole pairs on nearest-neighbor sites, namely dipole states are found to a play a dominant role in the generating higher harmonics. However, in the strong-field limit $A_0gg U$, the nonresonant states where quasiparticle-quasihole pairs are not on nearest-neighbor sites give rise to higher harmonics.

We study the dynamics of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $^{174}$Yb atoms coherently driven on a narrow optical transition. The excitation transfers the BEC to a superposition of states with different internal and momentum quantum numbers. We observe a crossover with decreasing driving strength between a regime of damped oscillations, where coherent driving prevails, and an incoherent regime, where relaxation takes over. Several relaxation mechanisms are involved: inelastic losses involving two excited atoms, leading to a non-exponential decay of populations; Doppler broadening due to the finite momentum width of the BEC and inhomogeneous elastic interactions, both leading to dephasing and to damping of the oscillations. We compare our observations to a two-component Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) model that fully includes these effects. For small or moderate densities, the damping of the oscillations is mostly due to Doppler broadening. In this regime, we find excellent agreement between the model and the experimental results. For higher densities, the role of interactions increases and so does the damping rate of the oscillations. The damping in the GP model is less pronounced than in the experiment, possibly a hint for many-body effects not captured by the mean-field description.
We develop a formalism for computing the non-linear response of interacting integrable systems. Our results are asymptotically exact in the hydrodynamic limit where perturbing fields vary sufficiently slowly in space and time. We show that spatially resolved nonlinear response distinguishes interacting integrable systems from noninteracting ones, exemplifying this for the Lieb-Liniger gas. We give a prescription for computing finite-temperature Drude weights of arbitrary order, which is in excellent agreement with numerical evaluation of the third-order response of the XXZ spin chain. We identify intrinsically nonperturbative regimes of the nonlinear response of integrable systems.

We study the Feshbach resonance of spin-1/2 particles in the presence of a uniform synthetic non-Abelian gauge field that produces spin orbit coupling along with constant spin potentials. We develop a renormalizable quantum field theory that includes the closed channel boson which engenders the Feshbach resonance, in the presence of the gauge field. By a study of the scattering of two particles in the presence of the gauge field, we show that the Feshbach magnetic field, where the apparent low energy scattering length diverges, depends on the conserved centre of mass momentum of the two particles. For high symmetry gauge fields, such as the one which produces an isotropic Rashba spin orbit coupling, we show that the system supports two bound states over a regime of magnetic fields for a negative background scattering length and resonance width comparable to the energy scale of the spin orbit coupling. We discuss the consequences of these findings for the many body setting, and point out that a broad resonance (width larger than spin orbit coupling energy scale) is most favourable for the realization of the rashbon condensate.
We study a model of interacting bosons that occupy the first excited p-band states of a two-dimensional optical lattice. In contrast to the much studied single band Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, this more complex model allows for non-trivial superfluid phases associated with condensation at non-zero momentum and staggered order of the orbital angular momentum in addition to the superfluid-Mott insulator transition. More specifically, we observe staggered orbital angular momentum order in the Mott phase at commensurate filling and superfluidity at all densities. We also observe a transition between the staggered angular momentum superfluid phase and a striped superfluid, with an alternation of the phase of the superfluid along one direction. The transition between these two phases was observed in a recent experiment, which is then qualitatively well described by our model.
We study persistent currents for interacting one-dimensional bosons on a tight ring trap, subjected to a rotating barrier potential, which induces an artificial U(1) gauge field. We show that, at intermediate interactions, the persistent current response is maximal, due to a subtle interplay of effects due to the barrier, the interaction and quantum fluctuations. These results are relevant for ongoing experiments with ultracold atomic gases on mesoscopic rings.
