Single-view intrinsic image decomposition is a highly ill-posed problem, and so a promising approach is to learn from large amounts of data. However, it is difficult to collect ground truth training data at scale for intrinsic images. In this paper, we explore a different approach to learning intrinsic images: observing image sequences over time depicting the same scene under changing illumination, and learning single-view decompositions that are consistent with these changes. This approach allows us to learn without ground truth decompositions, and to instead exploit information available from multiple images when training. Our trained model can then be applied at test time to single views. We describe a new learning framework based on this idea, including new loss functions that can be efficiently evaluated over entire sequences. While prior learning-based methods achieve good performance on specific benchmarks, we show that our approach generalizes well to several diverse datasets, including MIT intrinsic images, Intrinsic Images in the Wild and Shading Annotations in the Wild.
Learning deformable 3D objects from 2D images is an extremely ill-posed problem. Existing methods rely on explicit supervision to establish multi-view correspondences, such as template shape models and keypoint annotations, which restricts their applicability on objects in the wild. In this paper, we propose to use monocular videos, which naturally provide correspondences across time, allowing us to learn 3D shapes of deformable object categories without explicit keypoints or template shapes. Specifically, we present DOVE, which learns to predict 3D canonical shape, deformation, viewpoint and texture from a single 2D image of a bird, given a bird video collection as well as automatically obtained silhouettes and optical flows as training data. Our method reconstructs temporally consistent 3D shape and deformation, which allows us to animate and re-render the bird from arbitrary viewpoints from a single image.
We propose a new method for video object segmentation (VOS) that addresses object pattern learning from unlabeled videos, unlike most existing methods which rely heavily on extensive annotated data. We introduce a unified unsupervised/weakly supervised learning framework, called MuG, that comprehensively captures intrinsic properties of VOS at multiple granularities. Our approach can help advance understanding of visual patterns in VOS and significantly reduce annotation burden. With a carefully-designed architecture and strong representation learning ability, our learned model can be applied to diverse VOS settings, including object-level zero-shot VOS, instance-level zero-shot VOS, and one-shot VOS. Experiments demonstrate promising performance in these settings, as well as the potential of MuG in leveraging unlabeled data to further improve the segmentation accuracy.
In this paper, we propose to learn an Unsupervised Single Object Tracker (USOT) from scratch. We identify that three major challenges, i.e., moving object discovery, rich temporal variation exploitation, and online update, are the central causes of the performance bottleneck of existing unsupervised trackers. To narrow the gap between unsupervised trackers and supervised counterparts, we propose an effective unsupervised learning approach composed of three stages. First, we sample sequentially moving objects with unsupervised optical flow and dynamic programming, instead of random cropping. Second, we train a naive Siamese tracker from scratch using single-frame pairs. Third, we continue training the tracker with a novel cycle memory learning scheme, which is conducted in longer temporal spans and also enables our tracker to update online. Extensive experiments show that the proposed USOT learned from unlabeled videos performs well over the state-of-the-art unsupervised trackers by large margins, and on par with recent supervised deep trackers. Semantic cues and statistical regularities in real-world environment layouts can improve efficiency for navigation in novel environments. This paper learns and leverages such semantic cues for navigating to objects of interest in novel environments, by simply watching YouTube videos. This is challenging because YouTube videos dont come with labels for actions or goals, and may not even showcase optimal behavior. Our method tackles these challenges through the use of Q-learning on pseudo-labeled transition quadruples (image, action, next image, reward). We show that such off-policy Q-learning from passive data is able to learn meaningful semantic cues for navigation. These cues, when used in a hierarchical navigation policy, lead to improved efficiency at the ObjectGoal task in visually realistic simulations. We observe a relative improvement of 15-83% over end-to-end RL, behavior cloning, and classical methods, while using minimal direct interaction.
