The ethical concept of fairness has recently been applied in machine learning (ML) settings to describe a wide range of constraints and objectives. When considering the relevance of ethical concepts to subset selection problems, the concepts of diversity and inclusion are additionally applicable in order to create outputs that account for social power and access differentials. Activists, journalists, and scholars have long raised critical questions about the relationship between diversity, representation, and structural exclusions in data-intensive tools and services. We build on work mapping the emergent landscape of corporate AI ethics to center one outcome of these conversations: the incorporation of diversity and inclusion in corporate AI ethics activities. Using interpretive document analysis and analytic tools from the values in design field, we examine how diversity and inclusion work is articulated in public-facing AI ethics documentation produced by three companies that create application and services layer AI infrastructure: Google, Microsoft, and Salesforce. We find that as these documents make diversity and inclusion more tractable to engineers and technical clients, they reveal a drift away from civil rights justifications that resonates with the managerialization of diversity by corporations in the mid-1980s. The focus on technical artifacts, such as diverse and inclusive datasets, and the replacement of equity with fairness make ethical work more actionable for everyday practitioners. Yet, they appear divorced from broader DEI initiatives and other subject matter experts that could provide needed context to nuanced decisions around how to operationalize these values. Finally, diversity and inclusion, as configured by engineering logic, positions firms not as ethics owners but as ethics allocators; while these companies claim expertise on AI ethics, the responsibility of defining who diversity and inclusion are meant to protect and where it is relevant is pushed downstream to their customers.

In this paper, we propose to study the following maximum ordinal consensus problem: Suppose we are given a metric system (M, X), which contains k metrics M = {rho_1,..., rho_k} defined on the same point set X. We aim to find a maximum subset X of X such that all metrics in M are consistent when restricted on the subset X. In particular, our definition of consistency will rely only on the ordering between pairwise distances, and thus we call a consistent subset an ordinal consensus of X w.r.t. M. We will introduce two concepts of consistency in the ordinal sense: a strong one and a weak one. Specifically, a subset X is strongly consistent means that the ordering of their pairwise distances is the same under each of the input metric rho_i from M. The weak consistency, on the other hand, relaxes this exact ordering condition, and intuitively allows us to take the plurality of ordering relation between two pairwise distances. We show in this paper that the maximum consensus problems over both the strong and the weak consistency notions are NP-complete, even when there are only 2 or 3 simple metrics, such as line metrics and ultrametrics. We also develop constant-factor approximation algorithms for the dual version, the minimum inconsistent subset problem of a metric system (M, P), - note that optimizing these two dual problems are equivalent.
Symmetrical multilevel diversity coding (SMDC) is a classical model for coding over distributed storage. In this setting, a simple separate encoding strategy known as superposition coding was shown to be optimal in terms of achieving the minimum sum rate (Roche, Yeung, and Hau, 1997) and the entire admissible rate region (Yeung and Zhang, 1999) of the problem. The proofs utilized carefully constructed induction arguments, for which the classical subset entropy inequality of Han (1978) played a key role. This paper includes two parts. In the first part the existing optimality proofs for classical SMDC are revisited, with a focus on their connections to subset entropy inequalities. First, a new sliding-window subset entropy inequality is introduced and then used to establish the optimality of superposition coding for achieving the minimum sum rate under a weaker source-reconstruction requirement. Second, a subset entropy inequality recently proved by Madiman and Tetali (2010) is used to develop a new structural understanding to the proof of Yeung and Zhang on the optimality of superposition coding for achieving the entire admissible rate region. Building on the connections between classical SMDC and the subset entropy inequalities developed in the first part, in the second part the optimality of superposition coding is further extended to the cases where there is either an additional all-access encoder (SMDC-A) or an additional secrecy constraint (S-SMDC).

Defining and modeling the relation of inclusion between continuous belief function may be considered as an important operation in order to study their behaviors. Within this paper we will propose and present two forms of inclusion: The strict and the partial one. In order to develop this relation, we will study the case of consonant belief function. To do so, we will simulate normal distributions allowing us to model and analyze these relations. Based on that, we will determine the parameters influencing and characterizing the two forms of inclusion.

Diversity has an important, multifaceted role in the success of education. I have used a corpus analysis of the first ten years of Physical Review Physics Education Research to investigate the diversity, broadly defined, of physics education research. The results show that the physics education research community has extensively investigated the diversity of physics students, especially with respect to gender. However, some less visible but still numerous groups of students are little studied. On the whole, the contents of Physical Review Physics Education Research reveals a robust research community in physics education, but there is room for growth with respect to working with different kinds of students and the interactions between student attributes and teaching methods.
