The formation of bound states between mobile impurity particles and fermionic atoms has been demonstrated in spin-polarized Fermi gases with attractive interspecies interaction. We investigate bound states of mobile impurities immersed in a two-dimensional system with a symmetry-protected quadratic band touching. In addition to the standard s-wave interaction, we consider an anisotropic dipolar exchange interaction that locally breaks point group symmetries. Using a weak-coupling renormalization group approach and a ladder approximation for the impurity-fermion propagator, we establish that the number of bound states can be controlled by varying the anisotropy of the exchange interaction. Our results show that the degeneracy and momentum dependence of the binding energies reflect some distinctive properties of the quadratic band touching.

We investigate the possible existence of the bound state in the system of three bosons interacting with each other via zero-radius potentials in two dimensions (it can be atoms confined in two dimensions or tri-exciton states in heterostructures or dihalogenated materials). The bosons are classified in two species (a,b) such that a-a and b-b pairs repel each other and a-b attract each other, forming the two-particle bound state with binding energy $epsilon_b^{(2)}$ (such as bi-exciton). We developed an efficient routine based on the proper choice of basis for analytic and numerical calculations. For zero-angular momentum we found the energies of the three-particle bound states $epsilon^{(3)}_b$ for wide ranges of the scattering lengths, and found a universal curve of $epsilon^{(3)}_b/epsilon^{(2)}_b$ which depends only on the scattering lengths but not the microscopic details of the interactions, this is in contrast to the three-dimensional Efimov effect, where a non-universal three-body parameter is needed.
Pairing in a population imbalanced Fermi system in a two-dimensional optical lattice is studied using Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations and mean-field calculations. The approximation-free numerical results show a wide range of stability of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovshinnikov (FFLO) phase. Contrary to claims of fragility with increased dimensionality we find that this phase is stable across wide range of values for the polarization, temperature and interaction strength. Both homogeneous and harmonically trapped systems display pairing with finite center of mass momentum, with clear signatures either in momentum space or real space, which could be observed in cold atomic gases loaded in an optical lattice. We also use the harmonic level basis in the confined system and find that pairs can form between particles occupying different levels which can be seen as the analog of the finite center of mass momentum pairing in the translationally invariant case. Finally, we perform mean field calculations for the uniform and confined systems and show the results to be in good agreement with QMC. This leads to a simple picture of the different pairing mechanisms, depending on the filling and confining potential.
Lifshitz transitions in two 2D systems with a single quadratic band touching point as the chemical potential is varied have been studied here. The effects of interactions have been studied using the renormalization group (RG) and it is found that at the transition a repulsive interaction is marginally relevant and an attractive interaction is marginally irrelevant. We corroborate the results obtained from the RG calculation by studying a microscopic model whose ground state and Greens functions can be obtained exactly. We find that away from the transition, the system displays an instability towards forming and excitonic condensate.

We study the superfluid properties of two-dimensional spin-population-imbalanced Fermi gases to explore the interplay between the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition and the possible instability towards the Fulde-Ferrell (FF) state. By the mean-field approximation together with quantum fluctuations, we obtain phase diagrams as functions of temperature, chemical potential imbalance and binding energy. We find that the fluctuations change the mean-field phase diagram significantly. We also address possible effects of the phase separation and/or the anisotropic FF phase to the BKT mechanism. The superfluid density tensor of the FF state is obtained, and its transverse component is found always vanishing. This causes divergent fluctuations and possibly precludes the existence of the FF state at any non-zero temperature.

Experiments on quantum degenerate Fermi gases of magnetic atoms and dipolar molecules begin to probe their broken symmetry phases dominated by the long-range, anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction. Several candidate phases including the p-wave superfluid, the stripe density wave, and a supersolid have been proposed theoretically for two-dimensional spinless dipolar Fermi gases. Yet the phase boundaries predicted by different approximations vary greatly, and a definitive phase diagram is still lacking. Here we present a theory that treats all competing many-body instabilities in the particle-particle and particle-hole channel on equal footing. We obtain the low temperature phase diagram by numerically solving the functional renormalization-group flow equations and find a nontrivial density wave phase at small dipolar tilting angles and strong interactions, but no evidence of the supersolid phase. We also estimate the critical temperatures of the ordered phases.
