Fully superconducting machines provide the high power density required for future electric aircraft propulsion. However, superconducting windings generate AC losses in AC electrical machine environments. These AC losses are difficult to remove at low temperatures and they add an extra burden to the aircraft cooling system. Due to heavy cooling penalty, AC losses in the HTS stator, is one of the key topics in HTS machine design. In order to evaluate the AC loss of superconducting stator windings in a rotational machine environment, we designed and built a novel axial-flux high temperature superconducting (HTS) machine platform. The AC loss measurement is based on calorimetrically boiling-off liquid nitrogen. Both total AC loss and magnetisation loss in HTS stator are measured in a rotational magnetic field condition. This platform is essential to study ways to minimise AC losses in HTS stator, in order to maximum the efficiency of fully HTS machines.

Electric machines with very power-to-weight ratios are inevitable for hybrid electric aircraft applications. One potential technology that is very promising to achieve the required power-to-weight ratio for short-range aircraft, are superconductors used for high current densities in the stator or high magnetic fields in the rotor. In this paper, we present an indepth analysis of the potential for fully and partially superconducting electric machines that is based on an analytical approach taking into account all relevant physical domains such as electromagnetics, superconducting properties, thermal behavior as well as structural mechanics. For the requirements of the motors in the NASA N3-X concept aircraft, we find that fully superconducting machines could achieve 3.5 times higher power-to-weight ratio than partially superconducting machines. Furthermore, our model can be used to calculate the relevant KPIs such as mass, efficiency and cryogenic cooling requirements for any other machine design.
The use of high-temperature superconductors in electric machines offers potentially large gains in performance compared to conventional conductors, but also comes with unique challenges. Here, the electromagnetic properties of superconducting electric machines with bulk HTS trapped-field magnets in the rotor and conventional copper coils in the stator are investigated. To this end, an analytical model of the electromagnetic field in radial air-gap synchronous electric machines is developed and validated, taking into account the specific difficulties that occur in the treatment of machines with bulk HTS. Using this model, the influence of pole pair number, stator winding thickness, rotor surface coverage, and air gap width on the machines Esson coefficient is calculated. In contrast to numerical simulations, the method presented here can provide results within minutes, making it particularly useful for work in early development and systems engineering, where large parameter spaces must be investigated quickly.
We critically review our recent claims that it is possible to obtain a propellantless propulsion device similar to electrodynamic tethers by means of a closed wire partially shielded by a superconductor from the outer magnetic field. We find that such a device is not possible as it violates basic physical laws. Furthermore, we show what is the correct local picture for the currents distribution within the superconductor.
The hysteretic ac loss of a current-carrying conductor in which multiple superconducting strips are polygonally arranged around a cylindrical former is theoretically investigated as a model of superconducting cables. Using the critical state model, we analytically derive the ac loss $Q_n$ of a total of $n$ strips. The normalized loss $Q_n/Q_1$ is determined by the number of strips $n$ and the ratio of the strip width $2w$ to the diameter $2R$ of the cylindrical former. When $n>> 1$ and $w/R<< 1$, the behavior of $Q_n$ is similar to that of an infinite array of coplanar strips.
Challenging space missions include those at very low altitudes, where the atmosphere is source of aerodynamic drag on the spacecraft. To extend the lifetime of such missions, an efficient propulsion system is required. One solution is Atmosphere-Breathing Electric Propulsion (ABEP) that collects atmospheric particles to be used as propellant for an electric thruster. The system would minimize the requirement of limited propellant availability and can also be applied to any planetary body with atmosphere, enabling new missions at low altitude ranges for longer times. IRS is developing, within the H2020 DISCOVERER project, an intake and a thruster for an ABEP system. The article describes the design and simulation of the intake, optimized to feed the radio frequency (RF) Helicon-based plasma thruster developed at IRS. The article deals in particular with the design of intakes based on diffuse and specular reflecting materials, which are analysed by the PICLas DSMC-PIC tool. Orbital altitudes $h=150-250$ km and the respective species based on the NRLMSISE-00 model (O, $N_2$, $O_2$, He, Ar, H, N) are investigated for several concepts based on fully diffuse and specular scattering, including hybrid designs. The major focus has been on the intake efficiency defined as $eta_c=dot{N}_{out}/dot{N}_{in}$, with $dot{N}_{in}$ the incoming particle flux, and $dot{N}_{out}$ the one collected by the intake. Finally, two concepts are selected and presented providing the best expected performance for the operation with the selected thruster. The first one is based on fully diffuse accommodation yielding to $eta_c<0.46$ and the second one based un fully specular accommodation yielding to $eta_c<0.94$. Finally, also the influence of misalignment with the flow is analysed, highlighting a strong dependence of $eta_c$ in the diffuse-based intake while, ...
