This paper presents novel ultrareliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) techniques for URLLC services, such as Tactile Internet services. Among typical use-cases of URLLC services are tele-operation, immersive virtual reality, cooperative automated driving, and so on. In such URLLC services, new kinds of traffic such as haptic information including kinesthetic information and tactile information need to be delivered in addition to high-quality video and audio traffic in traditional multimedia services. Further, such a variety of traffic has various characteristics in terms of packet sizes and data rates with a variety of requirements of latency and reliability. Furthermore, some traffic may occur in a sporadic manner but require reliable delivery of packets of medium to large sizes within a low latency, which is not supported by current state-of-the-art wireless communication systems and is very challenging for future wireless communication systems. Thus, to meet such a variety of tight traffic requirements in a wireless communication system, novel technologies from the physical layer to the network layer need to be devised. In this paper, some novel physical layer technologies such as waveform multiplexing, multiple access scheme, channel code design, synchronization, and full-duplex transmission for spectrally-efficient URLLC are introduced. In addition, a novel performance evaluation approach, which combines a ray-tracing tool and system-level simulation, is suggested for evaluating the performance of the proposed schemes. Simulation results show the feasibility of the proposed schemes providing realistic URLLC services in realistic geographical environments, which encourages further efforts to substantiate the proposed work.
This paper considers the joint power control and resource allocation for a device-to-device (D2D) underlay cellular system with a multi-antenna BS employing ADCs with different resolutions. We propose a four-step algorithm that optimizes the ADC resolution profile at the base station (BS) to reduce the energy consumption and perform joint power control and resource allocation of D2D communication users (DUEs) and cellular users (CUEs) to improve the D2D reliability.
Terahertz (THz) communication (0.1-10 THz) is regarded as a promising technology, which provides rich available bandwidth and high data rate of terahertz bit per second (Tbps). However, THz signals suffer from high path loss, which profoundly decreases the transmission distance. To improve THz coverage, we consider the aid of mobile computing. Specifically, job offloading decision in mobile computing and frequency allocation in communication are co-designed to maximize distance and concurrently support ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) services for the sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication. Further, the above optimization problem is non-convex, then an effective and low-complexity method is proposed via exploiting the special structure of this problem. Finally, numerical results verify the effectiveness of our work.
Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications (URLLC) services in vehicular networks on millimeter-wave bands present a significant challenge, considering the necessity of constantly adjusting the beam directions. Conventional methods are mostly based on classical control theory, e.g., Kalman filter and its variations, which mainly deal with stationary scenarios. Therefore, severe application limitations exist, especially with complicated, dynamic Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) channels. This paper gives a thorough study of this subject, by first modifying the classical approaches, e.g., Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and Particle Filter (PF), for non-stationary scenarios, and then proposing a Reinforcement Learning (RL)-based approach that can achieve the URLLC requirements in a typical intersection scenario. Simulation results based on a commercial ray-tracing simulator show that enhanced EKF and PF methods achieve packet delay more than $10$ ms, whereas the proposed deep RL-based method can reduce the latency to about $6$ ms, by extracting context information from the training data.
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have recently received widespread attention in the field of wireless communication. An RIS can be controlled to reflect incident waves from the transmitter towards the receiver; a feature that is believed to fundamentally contribute to beyond 5G wireless technology. The typical RIS consists of entirely passive elements, which requires the high-dimensional channel estimation to be done elsewhere. Therefore, in this paper, we present a semi-passive large-scale RIS architecture equipped with only a small fraction of simplified receiver units with only 1-bit quantization. Based on this architecture, we first propose an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based approach to recover the training signals at the passive RIS elements, We then obtain the global channel by combining a channel sparsification step with the generalized approximate message passing (GAMP) algorithm. Our proposed scheme exploits both the sparsity and low-rankness properties of the channel in the joint spatial-frequency domain of a wideband mmWave multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communication system. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the pilot signaling needed for accurate channel estimation and outperform previous methods, even with fewer receiver units.
In this paper, we study the co-design of full-duplex (FD) radio with joint communication and radar sensing (JCAS) techniques in millimeter-wave (mmWave) heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Spectral co-existence of radar and communication systems causes mutual interference between the two systems, compromising both the data exchange and sensing capabilities. Focusing on the detection performance, we propose a cooperative detection technique, which exploits the sensing information from multiple base stations (BSs), aiming at enhancing the probability of successfully detecting an object. Three combining rules are considered, namely the textit{OR}, the textit{Majority} and the textit{AND} rule. In real-world network scenarios, the locations of the BSs are spatially correlated, exhibiting a repulsive behavior. Therefore, we model the spatial distribution of the BSs as a $beta$-Ginibre point process ($beta$-GPP), which can characterize the repulsion among the BSs. By using stochastic geometry tools, analytical expressions for the detection performance of $beta$-GPP-based FD-JCAS systems are expressed for each of the considered combining rule. Furthermore, by considering temporal interference correlation, we evaluate the probability of successfully detecting an object over two different time slots. Our results demonstrate that our proposed technique can significantly improve the detection performance when compared to the conventional non-cooperative technique.
