Stereo relative pose problem lies at the core of stereo visual odometry systems that are used in many applications. In this work, we present two minimal solvers for the stereo relative pose. We specifically consider the case when a minimal set consists of three point or line features and each of them has three known projections on two stereo cameras. We validate the importance of this formulation for practical purposes in our experiments with motion estimation. We then present a complete classification of minimal cases with three point or line correspondences each having three projections, and present two new solvers that can handle all such cases. We demonstrate a considerable effect from the integration of the new solvers into a visual SLAM system.

Convolutional neural network (CNN)-based stereo matching approaches generally require a dense cost volume (DCV) for disparity estimation. However, generating such cost volumes is computationally-intensive and memory-consuming, hindering CNN training and inference efficiency. To address this problem, we propose SCV-Stereo, a novel CNN architecture, capable of learning dense stereo matching from sparse cost volume (SCV) representations. Our inspiration is derived from the fact that DCV representations are somewhat redundant and can be replaced with SCV representations. Benefiting from these SCV representations, our SCV-Stereo can update disparity estimations in an iterative fashion for accurate and efficient stereo matching. Extensive experiments carried out on the KITTI Stereo benchmarks demonstrate that our SCV-Stereo can significantly minimize the trade-off between accuracy and efficiency for stereo matching. This paper proposes a new and efficient method to estimate 6-DoF ego-states: attitudes and positions in real time. The proposed method extract information of ego-states by observing a feature called TROVE (Three Rays and One VErtex). TROVE features are projected from structures that are ubiquitous on man-made constructions and objects. The proposed method does not search for conventional corner-type features nor use Perspective-n-Point (PnP) methods, and it achieves a real-time estimation of attitudes and positions up to 60 Hz. The accuracy of attitude estimates can reach 0.3 degrees and that of position estimates can reach 2 cm in an indoor environment. The result shows a promising approach for unmanned robots to localize in an environment that is rich in man-made structures.

Accurate real-time pose estimation of spacecraft or object in space is a key capability necessary for on-orbit spacecraft servicing and assembly tasks. Pose estimation of objects in space is more challenging than for objects on Earth due to space images containing widely varying illumination conditions, high contrast, and poor resolution in addition to power and mass constraints. In this paper, a convolutional neural network is leveraged to uniquely determine the translation and rotation of an object of interest relative to the camera. The main idea of using CNN model is to assist object tracker used in on space assembly tasks where only feature based method is always not sufficient. The simulation framework designed for assembly task is used to generate dataset for training the modified CNN models and, then results of different models are compared with measure of how accurately models are predicting the pose. Unlike many current approaches for spacecraft or object in space pose estimation, the model does not rely on hand-crafted object-specific features which makes this model more robust and easier to apply to other types of spacecraft. It is shown that the model performs comparable to the current feature-selection methods and can therefore be used in conjunction with them to provide more reliable estimates.

Mutual calibration between color and depth cameras is a challenging topic in multi-modal data registration. In this paper, we are confronted with a Bimodal Stereo problem, which aims to solve camera pose from a pair of an uncalibrated color image and a depth map from different views automatically. To address this problem, an iterative Shape-from-Shading (SfS) based framework is proposed to estimate shape and pose simultaneously. In the pipeline, the estimated shape is refined by the shape prior from the given depth map under the estimated pose. Meanwhile, the estimated pose is improved by the registration of estimated shape and shape from given depth map. We also introduce a shading based refinement in the pipeline to address noisy depth map with holes. Extensive experiments showed that through our method, both the depth map, the recovered shape as well as its pose can be desirably refined and recovered.
In this work, we present a novel data-driven method for robust 6DoF object pose estimation from a single RGBD image. Unlike previous methods that directly regressing pose parameters, we tackle this challenging task with a keypoint-based approach. Specifically, we propose a deep Hough voting network to detect 3D keypoints of objects and then estimate the 6D pose parameters within a least-squares fitting manner. Our method is a natural extension of 2D-keypoint approaches that successfully work on RGB based 6DoF estimation. It allows us to fully utilize the geometric constraint of rigid objects with the extra depth information and is easy for a network to learn and optimize. Extensive experiments were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of 3D-keypoint detection in the 6D pose estimation task. Experimental results also show our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by large margins on several benchmarks. Code and video are available at https://github.com/ethnhe/PVN3D.git.
