We confirm the Hanna Neumann conjecture for topologically finitely generated closed subgroups $U$ and $W$ of a nonsolvable Demushkin group $G$. Namely, we show that begin{equation*} sum_{g in U backslash G/W} bar d(U cap gWg^{-1}) leq bar d(U) bar d(W) end{equation*} where $bar d(K) = max{d(K) - 1, 0}$ and $d(K)$ is the least cardinality of a topological generating set for the group $K$.
As a consequence of the classification of finite simple groups, the classification of permutation groups of prime degree is complete, apart from the question of when the natural degree $(q^n-1)/(q-1)$ of ${rm PSL}_n(q)$ is prime. We present heuristic arguments and computational evidence based on the Bateman-Horn Conjecture to support a conjecture that for each prime $nge 3$ there are infinitely many primes of this form, even if one restricts to prime values of $q$. Similar arguments and results apply to the parameters of the simple groups ${rm PSL}_n(q)$, ${rm PSU}_n(q)$ and ${rm PSp}_{2n}(q)$ which arise in the work of Dixon and Zalesskii on linear groups of prime degree.
We prove the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture for Maass forms of the group $SL(2,Z)$, with the help of automorphic distribution theory: this is an alternative to classical automorphic function theory, in which the plane takes the place usually ascribed to the hyperbolic half-plane.
We study global fixed points for actions of Coxeter groups on nonpositively curved singular spaces. In particular, we consider property FA_n, an analogue of Serres property FA for actions on CAT(0) complexes. Property FA_n has implications for irreducible representations and complex of groups decompositions. In this paper, we give a specific condition on Coxeter presentations that implies FA_n and show that this condition is in fact equivalent to FA_n for n=1 and 2. As part of the proof, we compute the Gersten-Stallings angles between special subgroups of Coxeter groups.
Let $K$ be an algebraic function field with constant field ${mathbb F}_q$. Fix a place $infty$ of $K$ of degree $delta$ and let $A$ be the ring of elements of $K$ that are integral outside $infty$. We give an explicit description of the elliptic points for the action of the Drinfeld modular group $G=GL_2(A)$ on the Drinfelds upper half-plane $Omega$ and on the Drinfeld modular curve $G!setminus!Omega$. It is known that under the {it building map} elliptic points are mapped onto vertices of the {it Bruhat-Tits tree} of $G$. We show how such vertices can be determined by a simple condition on their stabilizers. Finally for the special case $delta=1$ we obtain from this a surprising free product decomposition for $PGL_2(A)$.
We prove the test function conjecture of Kottwitz and the first named author for local models of Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure attached to Weil-restricted groups, as defined by B. Levin. Our result covers the (modified) local models attached to all connected reductive groups over $p$-adic local fields with $pgeq 5$. In addition, we give a self-contained study of relative affine Grassmannians and loop groups formed using general relative effective Cartier divisors in a relative curve over an arbitrary Noetherian affine scheme.
