Limited bandwidth resources and higher energy efficiency requirements motivate incorporating multicast and broadcast transmission into the next-generation cellular network architectures, particularly for multimedia streaming applications. Layered division multiplexing (LDM), a form of NOMA, can potentially improve unicast throughput and broadcast coverage with respect to traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (FDM) or time division multiplexing (TDM), by simultaneously using the same frequency and time resources for multiple unicast or broadcast transmissions. In this paper, the performance of LDM-based unicast and broadcast transmission in a cellular network is studied by assuming a single frequency network (SFN) operation for the broadcast layer, while allowing arbitrarily clustered cooperation among the base stations (BSs) for the transmission of unicast data streams. Beamforming and power allocation between unicast and broadcast layers, the so-called injection level in the LDM literature, are optimized with the aim of minimizing the sum-power under constraints on the user-specific unicast rates and on the common broadcast rate. The effects of imperfect channel coding and imperfect CSI are also studied to gain insights into robust implementation in practical systems. The non-convex optimization problem is tackled by means of successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques. Performance upper bounds are also presented by means of the $rm{S}$-procedure followed by semidefinite relaxation (SDR). Finally, a dual decomposition-based solution is proposed to facilitate an efficient distributed implementation of LDM where the optimal unicast beamforming vectors can be obtained locally by the cooperating BSs. Numerical results are presented, which show the tightness of the proposed bounds and hence the near-optimality of the proposed solutions.

Base station (BS) cooperation is set to play a key role in managing interference in dense heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs). Non-coherent joint transmission (JT) is particularly appealing due to its low complexity, smaller overhead, and ability for load balancing. However, a general analysis of this technique is difficult mostly due to the lack of tractable models. This paper addresses this gap and presents a tractable model for analyzing non-coherent JT in HCNs, while incorporating key system parameters such as user-centric BS clustering and channel-dependent cooperation activation. Assuming all BSs of each tier follow a stationary Poisson point process, the coverage probability for non-coherent JT is derived. Using the developed model, it is shown that for small cooperative clusters of small-cell BSs, non-coherent JT by small cells provides spectral efficiency gains without significantly increasing cell load. Further, when cooperation is aggressively triggered intra-cluster frequency reuse within small cells is favorable over intra-cluster coordinated scheduling.
In this paper, we investigate the combination of non-orthogonal multiple access and millimeter-Wave communications (mmWave-NOMA). A downlink cellular system is considered, where an analog phased array is equipped at both the base station and users. A joint Tx-Rx beamforming and power allocation problem is formulated to maximize the achievable sum rate (ASR) subject to a minimum rate constraint for each user. As the problem is non-convex, we propose a sub-optimal solution with three stages. In the first stage, the optimal power allocation with a closed form is obtained for an arbitrary fixed Tx-Rx beamforming. In the second stage, the optimal Rx beamforming with a closed form is designed for an arbitrary fixed Tx beamforming. In the third stage, the original problem is reduced to a Tx beamforming problem by using the previous results, and a boundary-compressed particle swarm optimization (BC-PSO) algorithm is proposed to obtain a sub-optimal solution. Extensive performance evaluations are conducted to verify the rational of the proposed solution, and the results show that the proposed sub-optimal solution can achieve a near-upper-bound performance in terms of ASR, which is significantly improved compared with those of the state-of-the-art schemes and the conventional mmWave orthogonal multiple access (mmWave-OMA) system.

Collaborative beamforming (CB) and cooperative transmission (CT) have recently emerged as communication techniques that can make effective use of collaborative/cooperative nodes to create a virtual multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) system. Extending the lifetime of networks composed of battery-operated nodes is a key issue in the design and operation of wireless sensor networks. This paper considers the effects on network lifetime of allowing closely located nodes to use CB/CT to reduce the load or even to avoid packet-forwarding requests to nodes that have critical battery life. First, the effectiveness of CB/CT in improving the signal strength at a faraway destination using energy in nearby nodes is studied. Then, the performance improvement obtained by this technique is analyzed for a special 2D disk case. Further, for general networks in which information-generation rates are fixed, a new routing problem is formulated as a linear programming problem, while for other general networks, the cost for routing is dynamically adjusted according to the amount of energy remaining and the effectiveness of CB/CT. From the analysis and the simulation results, it is seen that the proposed method can reduce the payloads of energy-depleting nodes by about 90% in the special case network considered and improve the lifetimes of general networks by about 10%, compared with existing techniques.
In this paper, we investigate the combination of two key enabling technologies for the fifth generation (5G) wireless mobile communication, namely millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). In particular, we consider a typical 2-user uplink mmWave-NOMA system, where the base station (BS) equips an analog beamforming structure with a single RF chain and serves 2 NOMA users. An optimization problem is formulated to maximize the achievable sum rate of the 2 users while ensuring a minimal rate constraint for each user. The problem turns to be a joint power control and beamforming problem, i.e., we need to find the beamforming vectors to steer to the two users simultaneously subject to an analog beamforming structure, and meanwhile control appropriate power on them. As direct search for the optimal solution of the non-convex problem is too complicated, we propose to decompose the original problem into two sub-problems that are relatively easy to solve: one is a power control and beam gain allocation problem, and the other is an analog beamforming problem under a constant-modulus constraint. The rational of the proposed solution is verified by extensive simulations, and the performance evaluation results show that the proposed sub-optimal solution achieve a close-to-bound uplink sum-rate performance.

In vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, reliability is one of the most important performance metrics in safety-critical applications such as advanced driving, remote driving, and vehicle platooning. In this paper, the link reliability of unicast concurrent transmission in mode 1 (centralized mode) of 5G New Radio based V2X (NR-V2X) is analyzed. The closed-form expression of link reliability for concurrent unicast transmission is firstly derived for a highway scenario under a given interference distance distribution. On this basis, according to the macroscopic configuration of the system, a method to control the number of concurrent transmission nodes is proposed, including the communication range, message packet size, and the number of lanes, etc. The results indicate that the proposed method can maximize the system load on the premise of satisfying the link reliability requirements.
