Existing studies about ambient backscatter communication mostly assume flat-fading channels. However, frequency-selective channels widely exist in many practical scenarios. Therefore, this paper investigates ambient backscatter communication systems over frequency-selective channels. In particular, we propose an interference-free transceiver design to facilitate signal detection at the reader. Our design utilizes the cyclic prefix (CP) of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) source symbols, which can cancel the signal interference and thus enhance the detection accuracy at the reader. Meanwhile, our design leads to no interference on the existing OFDM communication systems. Next we suggest a chi-square based detector for the reader and derive the optimal detection threshold. Simulations are then provided to corroborate our proposed studies.

Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) enables radio-frequency (RF) powered backscatter devices (BDs) (e.g., sensors, tags) to modulate their information bits over ambient RF carriers in an over-the-air manner. This technology also called modulation in the air, thus has emerged as a promising solution to achieve green communications for future Internet-of-Things. This paper studies an AmBC system by leveraging the ambient orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulated signals in the air. We first model such AmBC system from a spread-spectrum communication perspective, upon which a novel joint design for BD waveform and receiver detector is proposed. The BD symbol period is designed to be in general an integer multiplication of the OFDM symbol period, and the waveform for BD bit `0 maintains the same state within a BD symbol period, while the waveform for BD bit `1 has a state transition in the middle of each OFDM symbol period within a BD symbol period. In the receiver detector design, we construct the test statistic that cancels out the direct-link interference by exploiting the repeating structure of the ambient OFDM signals due to the use of cyclic prefix. For the system with a single-antenna receiver, the maximum-likelihood detector is proposed to recover the BD bits, for which the optimal threshold is obtained in closed-form expression. For the system with a multi-antenna receiver, we propose a new test statistic, and derive the optimal detector. Moreover, practical timing synchronization algorithms are proposed, and we also analyze the effect of various system parameters on the system performance. Finally, extensive numerical results are provided to verify that the proposed transceiver design can improve the system bit-error-rate (BER) performance and the operating range significantly, and achieve much higher data rate, as compared to the conventional design.
In this paper, we propose two schemes for asynchronous multi-relay two-way relay (MR-TWR) systems in which neither the users nor the relays know the channel state information (CSI). In an MR-TWR system, two users exchange their messages with the help of $N_R$ relays. Most of the existing works on MR-TWR systems based on differential modulation assume perfect symbol-level synchronization between all communicating nodes. However, this assumption is not valid in many practical systems, which makes the design of differentially modulated schemes more challenging. Therefore, we design differential modulation schemes that can tolerate timing misalignment under frequency-selective fading. We investigate the performance of the proposed schemes in terms of either probability of bit error or pairwise error probability. Through numerical examples, we show that the proposed schemes outperform existing competing solutions in the literature, especially for high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values.
In this paper we use a variation of simulated annealing algorithm for optimizing two-dimensional constellations with 32 signals. The main objective is to maximize the symmetric pragmatic capacity under the peak-power constraint. The method allows the joint optimization of constellation and binary labeling. We also investigate the performance of the optimized constellation over nonlinear satellite channel under additive white Gaussian noise. We consider the performance over systems with and without pre-distorters. In both cases the optimized constellations perform considerably better than the conventional Amplitude Phase Shift Keying (APSK) modulations, used in the current digital video broadcasting standard (DVB-S2) on satellite channels. Based on our optimized constellations, we also propose a new labeling for the 4+12+16-APSK constellation of the DVB-S2 standard which is Gray over all rings.
A memoryless state-dependent broadcast channel (BC) is considered, where the transmitter wishes to convey two private messages to two receivers while simultaneously estimating the respective states via generalized feedback. The model at hand is motivated by a joint radar and communication system where radar and data applications share the same frequency band. For physically degraded BCs with i.i.d. state sequences, we characterize the capacity-distortion tradeoff region. For general BCs, we provide inner and outer bounds on the capacitydistortion region, as well as a sufficient condition when it is equal to the product of the capacity region and the set of achievable distortion. Interestingly, the proposed synergetic design significantly outperforms a conventional approach that splits the resource either for sensing or communication.
We consider a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel (IC), where a single data stream per user is transmitted and each receiver treats interference as noise. The paper focuses on the open problem of computing the outermost boundary (so-called Pareto boundary-PB) of the achievable rate region under linear transceiver design. The Pareto boundary consists of the strict PB and non-strict PB. For the two user case, we compute the non-strict PB and the two ending points of the strict PB exactly. For the strict PB, we formulate the problem to maximize one rate while the other rate is fixed such that a strict PB point is reached. To solve this non-convex optimization problem which results from the hard-coupled two transmit beamformers, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm. Furthermore, we extend the algorithm to the multi-user scenario and show convergence. Numerical simulations illustrate that the proposed algorithm computes a sequence of well-distributed operating points that serve as a reasonable and complete inner bound of the strict PB compared with existing methods.
