We demonstrate a system composed of two resonators that are coupled solely through a nonlinear interaction, and where the linear properties of each resonator can be controlled locally. We show that this class of dynamical systems has peculiar properties with important consequences for the study of classical and quantum nonlinear optical phenomena. As an example we discuss the case of dual-pump spontaneous four-wave mixing.

We experimentally demonstrate stimulated four-wave mixing in two linearly uncoupled integrated Si$_3$N$_4$ micro-resonators. In our structure the resonance combs of each resonator can be tuned independently, with the energy transfer from one resonator to the other occurring in the presence of a nonlinear interaction. This method allows flexible and efficient on-chip control of the nonlinear interaction, and is readily applicable to other third-order nonlinear phenomena.

We present a detailed analysis of strongly driven spontaneous four-wave mixing in a lossy integrated microring resonator side-coupled to a channel waveguide. A nonperturbative, analytic solution within the undepleted pump approximation is developed for a cw pump input of arbitrary intensity. In the strongly driven regime self- and cross-phase modulation, as well as multi-pair generation, lead to a rich variety of power-dependent effects; the results are markedly different than in the low power limit. The photon pair generation rate, single photon spectrum, and joint spectral intensity (JSI) distribution are calculated. Splitting of the generated single photon spectrum into a doublet structure associated with both pump detuning and cross-phase modulation is predicted, as well as substantial narrowing of the generated signal and idler bandwidths associated with the onset of optical parametric oscillation at intermediate powers. Both the correlated and uncorrelated contributions to the JSI are calculated, and for sufficient powers the uncorrelated part of the JSI is found to form a quadruplet structure. The pump detuning is found to play a crucial role in all of these phenomena, and a critical detuning is identified which divides the system behaviour into distinct regimes, as well as an optimal detuning strategy which preserves many of the low-power characteristics of the generated photons for arbitrary input power.
The rising need for hybrid physical platforms has triggered a renewed interest for the development of agile radio-frequency phononic circuits with complex functionalities. The combination of travelling waves with resonant mechanical elements appears as an appealing means of harnessing elastic vibration. In this work, we demonstrate that this combination can be further enriched by the occurrence of elastic non-linearities induced travelling surface acoustic waves (SAW) interacting with a pair of otherwise linear micron-scale mechanical resonators. Reducing the resonator gap distance and increasing the SAW amplitude results in a frequency softening of the resonator pair response that lies outside the usual picture of geometrical Duffing non-linearities. The dynamics of the SAW excitation scheme allows further control of the resonator motion, notably leading to circular polarization states. These results paves the way towards versatile high-frequency phononic-MEMS/NEMS circuits fitting both classical and quantum technologies.
We present a scheme for tuning and controlling nano mechanical resonators by subjecting them to electrostatic gradient fields, provided by nearby tip electrodes. We show that this approach enables access to a novel regime of optomechanics, where the intrinsic nonlinearity of the nanoresonator can be explored. In this regime, one or several laser driven cavity modes coupled to the nanoresonator and suitably adjusted gradient fields allow to control the motional state of the nanoresonator at the single phonon level. Some applications of this platform have been presented previously [New J. Phys. 14, 023042 (2012), Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 120503 (2013)]. Here, we provide a detailed description of the corresponding setup and its optomechanical coupling mechanisms, together with an in-depth analysis of possible sources of damping or decoherence and a discussion of the readout of the nanoresonator state.
We investigate nonlinear dispersive mode coupling between the flexural in- and out-of-plane modes of two doubly clamped, nanomechanical silicon nitride string resonators. As the amplitude of one mode transitions from the linear response regime into the nonlinear regime, we find a frequency shift of two other modes. The resonators are strongly elastically coupled via a shared clamping point and can be tuned in and out of resonance dielectrically, giving rise to multimode avoided crossings. When the modes start hybridizing, their polarization changes. This affects the nonlinear dispersive coupling in a non-trivial way. We propose a theoretical model to describe the dependence of the dispersive coupling on the mode hybridization.
