We examine skyrmions driven periodically over random quenched disorder and show that there is a transition from reversible motion to a state in which the skyrmion trajectories are chaotic or irreversible. We find that the characteristic time required for the system to organize into a steady reversible or irreversible state exhibits a power law divergence near a critical ac drive period, with the same exponent as that observed for reversible to irreversible transitions in periodically sheared colloidal systems, suggesting that the transition can be described as an absorbing phase transition in the directed percolation universality class. We compare our results to the behavior of an overdamped system and show that the Magnus term enhances the irreversible behavior by increasing the number of dynamically accessible orbits. We discuss the implications of this work for skyrmion applications involving the long time repeatable dynamics of dense skyrmion arrays.

Classically, the power generated by an ideal thermal machine cannot be larger than the Carnot limit. This profound result is rooted in the second law of thermodynamics. A hot question is whether this bound is still valid for microengines operating far from equilibrium. Here, we demonstrate that a quantum chiral conductor driven by AC voltage can indeed work with efficiencies much larger than the Carnot bound. The system also extracts work from common temperature baths, violating Kelvin-Planck statement. Nonetheless, with the proper definition, entropy production is always positive and the second law is preserved. The crucial ingredients to obtain efficiencies beyond the Carnot limit are: i) irreversible entropy production by the photoassisted excitation processes due to the AC field and ii) absence of power injection thanks to chirality. Our results are relevant in view of recent developments that use small conductors to test the fundamental limits of thermodynamic engines.
Electrons in a lattice exhibit time-periodic motion, known as Bloch oscillation, when subject to an additional static electric field. Here we show that a corresponding dynamics can occur upon replacing the spatially periodic potential by a time-periodic driving: Floquet oscillations of charge carriers in a spatially homogeneous system. The time lattice of the driving gives rise to Floquet bands that take on the role of the usual Bloch bands. For two different drivings (harmonic driving and periodic kicking through pulses) of systems with linear dispersion we demonstrate the existence of such oscillations, both by directly propagating wave packets and based on a complementary Floquet analysis. The Floquet oscillations feature richer oscillation patterns than their Bloch counterpart and enable the imaging of Floquet bands. Moreover, their period can be directly tuned through the driving frequency. Such oscillations should be experimentally observable in effective Dirac systems, such as graphene, when illuminated with circularly polarized light.
It is known that there are lattice models in which non-interacting particles get dynamically localized when periodic $delta$-function kicks are applied with a particular strength. We use both numerical and analytical methods to study the effects of interactions in three different models in one dimension. The systems we have considered include spinless fermions with interactions between nearest-neighbor sites, the Hubbard model of spin-1/2 fermions, and the Bose Hubbard model with on-site interactions. We derive effective Floquet Hamiltonians up to second order in the time period of kicking. Using these we show that interactions can give rise to a variety of interesting results such as two-body bound states in all three models and dispersionless many-body bound states for spinless fermions and bosons. We substantiate these results by exact diagonalization and stroboscopic time evolution of systems with a finite number of particles. We derive a low-energy pseudo-spin-1/2 limit of the Bose Hubbard system in the thermodynamic limit and show that a special case of this has an exponentially large number of ground states. Finally we study the effect of changing the strength of the $delta$-function kicks slightly away from perfect dynamical localization; we find that a single particle remains dynamically localized for a long time after which it moves ballistically.
We theoretically study the thermal relaxation of many-body systems under the action of oscillating external fields. When the magnitude or the orientation of a field is modulated around values where the pairwise heat-exchange conductances depend non-linearly on this field, we demonstrate that the time symmetry is broken during the evolution of temperatures over a modulation cycle. We predict that this asymmetry enables a pumping of heat which can be used to cool down faster the system. This effect is illustrated through different magneto-optical systems under the action of an oscillating magnetic field.
Near-field heat engines are devices that convert the evanescent thermal field supported by a primary source into usable mechanical energy. By analyzing the thermodynamic performance of three-body near-field heat engines, we demonstrate that the power they supply can be substantially larger than that of two-body systems, showing their strong potential for energy harvesting. Theoretical limits for energy and entropy fluxes in three-body systems are discussed and compared with their corresponding two-body counterparts. Such considerations confirm that the thermodynamic availability in energy-conversion processes driven by three-body photon tunneling can exceed the thermodynamic availability in two-body systems.
