Environmental fluid mechanics underlies a wealth of natural, industrial and, by extension, societal challenges. In the coming decades, as we strive towards a more sustainable planet, there are a wide range of grand challenge problems that need to be tackled, ranging from fundamental advances in understanding and modeling of stratified turbulence and consequent mixing, to applied studies of pollution transport in the ocean, atmosphere and urban environments. A workshop was organized in the Les Houches School of Physics in France in January 2019 with the objective of gathering leading figures in the field to produce a road map for the scientific community. Five subject areas were addressed: multiphase flow, stratified flow, ocean transport, atmospheric and urban transport, and weather and climate prediction. This article summarizes the discussions and outcomes of the meeting, with the intent of providing a resource for the community going forward.
A new kind of Lagrangian diagnostic family is proposed and a specific form of it is suggested for characterizing mixing: the maximal extent of a trajectory (MET). It enables the detection of coherent structures and their dynamics in two- (and potentially three-) dimensional unsteady flows in both bounded and open domains. Its computation is much easier than all other Lagrangian diagnostics known to us and provides new insights regarding the mixing properties on both short and long time scales and on both spatial plots and distribution diagrams. We demonstrate its applicability to two dimensional flows using two toy models and a data set of surface currents from the Mediterranean Sea.
We present a brief overview of integrability of nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations with a focus on the Painleve property: an ODE of second order has the Painleve property if the only movable singularities connected to this equation are single poles. The importance of this property can be seen from the Ablowitz-Ramani-Segur conhecture that states that a nonlinear PDE is solvable by inverse scattering transformation only if each nonlinear ODE obtained by exact reduction of this PDE has the Painleve property. The Painleve property motivated motivated much research on obtaining exact solutions on nonlinear PDEs and leaded in particular to the method of simplest equation. A version of this method called modified method of simplest equation is discussed below.
We present a collection of eight data sets, from state-of-the-art experiments and numerical simulations on turbulent velocity statistics along particle trajectories obtained in different flows with Reynolds numbers in the range $R_lambda in [120:740]$. Lagrangian structure functions from all data sets are found to collapse onto each other on a wide range of time lags, revealing a universal statistics, and calling for a unified theoretical description. Parisi-Frisch Multifractal theory, suitable extended to the dissipative scales and to the Lagrangian domain, is found to capture intermittency of velocity statistics over the whole three decades of temporal scales here investigated.
The flow of fluids in channels, pipes or ducts, as in any other wall-bounded flow (like water along the hulls of ships or air on airplanes) is hindered by a drag, which increases many-folds when the fluid flow turns from laminar to turbulent. A major technological problem is how to reduce this drag in order to minimize the expense of transporting fluids like oil in pipelines, or to move ships in the ocean. It was discovered in the mid-twentieth century that minute concentrations of polymers can reduce the drag in turbulent flows by up to 80%. While experimental knowledge had accumulated over the years, the fundamental theory of drag reduction by polymers remained elusive for a long time, with arguments raging whether this is a skin or a bulk effect. In this colloquium review we first summarize the phenomenology of drag reduction by polymers, stressing both its universal and non-universal aspects, and then proceed to review a recent theory that provides a quantitative explanation of all the known phenomenology. We treat both flexible and rod-like polymers, explaining the existence of universal properties like the Maximum Drag Reduction (MDR) asymptote, as well as non-universal cross-over phenomena that depend on the Reynolds number, on the nature of the polymer and on its concentration. Finally we also discuss other agents for drag reduction with a stress on the important example of bubbles.
