This paper presents a pilot study on developing an instrument to predict the quality of e-commerce websites. The 8C model was adopted as the reference model of the heuristic evaluation. Each dimension of the 8C was mapped into a set of quantitative website elements, selected websites were scraped to get the quantitative website elements, and the score of each dimension was calculated. A software was developed in PHP for the experiments. In the training process, 10 experiments were conducted and quantitative analyses were regressively conducted between the experiments. The conversion rate was used to verify the heuristic evaluation of an e-commerce website after each experiment. The results showed that the mapping revisions between the experiments improved the performance of the evaluation instrument, therefore the experiment process and the quantitative mapping revision guideline proposed was on the right track. The software resulted from the experiment 10 can serve as the aimed e-commerce website evaluation instrument. The experiment results and the future work have been discussed.

The high number of products available makes it difficult for a user to find the most suitable products according to their needs. This problem is especially exacerbated when the user is trying to optimize multiple attributes during product selection, e.g. memory size and camera resolution requirements in case of smartphones. Previous studies have shown that such users search extensively to find a product that best meets their needs. In this paper, we propose an interface that will help users in selecting a multi-attribute product through a series of visualizations. This interface is especially targeted for users that desire to purchase the best possible product according to some criteria. The interface works by allowing the user to progressively shortlist products and ultimately select the most appropriate product from a very small consideration set. We evaluated our proposed interface by conducting a controlled experiment that empirically measures the efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction of our visualization based interface and a typical e-commerce interface. The results showed that our proposed interface allowed the user to find a desired product quickly and correctly, moreover, the subjective opinion of the users also favored our proposed interface.

Boosting sales of e-commerce services is guaranteed once users find more matching items to their interests in a short time. Consequently, recommendation systems have become a crucial part of any successful e-commerce services. Although various recommendation techniques could be used in e-commerce, a considerable amount of attention has been drawn to session-based recommendation systems during the recent few years. This growing interest is due to the security concerns in collecting personalized user behavior data, especially after the recent general data protection regulations. In this work, we present a comprehensive evaluation of the state-of-the-art deep learning approaches used in the session-based recommendation. In session-based recommendation, a recommendation system counts on the sequence of events made by a user within the same session to predict and endorse other items that are more likely to correlate with his/her preferences. Our extensive experiments investigate baseline techniques (textit{e.g.,} nearest neighbors and pattern mining algorithms) and deep learning approaches (textit{e.g.,} recurrent neural networks, graph neural networks, and attention-based networks). Our evaluations show that advanced neural-based models and session-based nearest neighbor algorithms outperform the baseline techniques in most of the scenarios. However, we found that these models suffer more in case of long sessions when there exists drift in user interests, and when there is no enough data to model different items correctly during training. Our study suggests that using hybrid models of different approaches combined with baseline algorithms could lead to substantial results in session-based recommendations based on dataset characteristics. We also discuss the drawbacks of current session-based recommendation algorithms and further open research directions in this field.

The rich body of Bandit literature not only offers a diverse toolbox of algorithms, but also makes it hard for a practitioner to find the right solution to solve the problem at hand. Typical textbooks on Bandits focus on designing and analyzing algorithms, and surveys on applications often present a list of individual applications. While these are valuable resources, there exists a gap in mapping applications to appropriate Bandit algorithms. In this paper, we aim to reduce this gap with a structured map of Bandits to help practitioners navigate to find relevant and practical Bandit algorithms. Instead of providing a comprehensive overview, we focus on a small number of key decision points related to reward, action, and features, which often affect how Bandit algorithms are chosen in practice.
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is a popular approach to instruction that supports students to get hands-on training by solving problems. Question Pool websites (QPs) such as LeetCode, Code Chef, and Math Playground help PBL by supplying authentic, diverse, and contextualized questions to students. Nonetheless, empirical findings suggest that 40% to 80% of students registered in QPs drop out in less than two months. This research is the first attempt to understand and predict student dropouts from QPs via exploiting students engagement moods. Adopting a data-driven approach, we identify five different engagement moods for QP students, which are namely challenge-seeker, subject-seeker, interest-seeker, joy-seeker, and non-seeker. We find that students have collective preferences for answering questions in each engagement mood, and deviation from those preferences increases their probability of dropping out significantly. Last but not least, this paper contributes by introducing a new hybrid machine learning model (we call Dropout-Plus) for predicting student dropouts in QPs. The test results on a popular QP in China, with nearly 10K students, show that Dropout-Plus can exceed the rival algorithms dropout prediction performance in terms of accuracy, F1-measure, and AUC. We wrap up our work by giving some design suggestions to QP managers and online learning professionals to reduce their student dropouts.
The slate re-ranking problem considers the mutual influences between items to improve user satisfaction in e-commerce, compared with the point-wise ranking. Previous works either directly rank items by an end to end model, or rank items by a score function that trades-off the point-wise score and the diversity between items. However, there are two main existing challenges that are not well studied: (1) the evaluation of the slate is hard due to the complex mutual influences between items of one slate; (2) even given the optimal evaluation, searching the optimal slate is challenging as the action space is exponentially large. In this paper, we present a novel Generator and Critic slate re-ranking approach, where the Critic evaluates the slate and the Generator ranks the items by the reinforcement learning approach. We propose a Full Slate Critic (FSC) model that considers the real impressed items and avoids the impressed bias of existing models. For the Generator, to tackle the problem of large action space, we propose a new exploration reinforcement learning algorithm, called PPO-Exploration. Experimental results show that the FSC model significantly outperforms the state of the art slate evaluation methods, and the PPO-Exploration algorithm outperforms the existing reinforcement learning methods substantially. The Generator and Critic approach improves both the slate efficiency(4% gmv and 5% number of orders) and diversity in live experiments on one of the largest e-commerce websites in the world.
