The Hall tensor emerges from the study of the Hall effect, an important magnetic effect observed in electric conductors and semiconductors. The Hall tensor is third order and three dimensional, whose first two indices are skew-symmetric. In this paper, we investigate the isotropic polynomial invariants of the Hall tensor by connecting it with a second order tensor via the third order Levi-Civita tensor. We propose a minimal isotropic integrity basis with 10 invariants for the Hall tensor. Furthermore, we prove that this minimal integrity basis is also an irreducible isotropic function basis of the Hall tensor.

In this paper, we present an eleven invariant isotropic irreducible function basis of a third order three-dimensional symmetric tensor. This irreducible function basis is a proper subset of the Olive-Auffray minimal isotropic integrity basis of that tensor. The octic invariant and a sextic invariant in the Olive-Auffray integrity basis are dropped out. This result is of significance to the further research of irreducible function bases of higher order tensors.

In this thesis new objects to the existing set of invariants of Lie algebras are added. These invariant characteristics are capable of describing the nilpotent parametric continuum of Lie algebras. The properties of these invariants, in view of possible alternative classifications of Lie algebras, are formulated and their behaviour on known lower--dimensional Lie algebras investigated. It is demonstrated that these invariants, in view of their application on graded contractions of sl(3,C), are also effective in higher dimensions. A necessary contraction criterion involving these invariants is derived and applied to lower--dimensional cases. Possible application of these invariant characteristics to Jordan algebras is investigated.
Triangular Lie algebras are the Lie algebras which can be faithfully represented by triangular matrices of any finite size over the real/complex number field. In the paper invariants (generalized Casimir operators) are found for three classes of Lie algebras, namely those which are either strictly or non-strictly triangular, and for so-called special upper triangular Lie algebras. Algebraic algorithm of [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen., 2006, V.39, 5749; math-ph/0602046], developed further in [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor., 2007, V.40, 113; math-ph/0606045], is used to determine the invariants. A conjecture of [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen., 2001, V.34, 9085], concerning the number of independent invariants and their form, is corroborated.
We show that the averaged characteristic polynomial and the averaged inverse characteristic polynomial, associated with Hermitian matrices whose elements perform a random walk in the space of complex numbers, satisfy certain partial differential, diffusion-like, equations. These equations are valid for matrices of arbitrary size. Their solutions can be given an integral representation that allows for a simple study of their asymptotic behaviors for a broad range of initial conditions.
We consider proper colorings of planar graphs embedded in the annulus, such that vertices on one rim can take Q_s colors, while all remaining vertices can take Q colors. The corresponding chromatic polynomial is related to the partition function of a boundary loop model. Using results for the latter, the phase diagram of the coloring problem (with real Q and Q_s) is inferred, in the limits of two-dimensional or quasi one-dimensional infinite graphs. We find in particular that the special role played by Beraha numbers Q=4 cos^2(pi/n) for the usual chromatic polynomial does not extend to the case Q different from Q_s. The agreement with (scarce) existing numerical results is perfect; further numerical checks are presented here.
