A novel theoretical approach to the problem of the compositeness ($X$) of a resonance or bound state is developed on the basis of the expectation values of the number operators of the free particles in the continuum. This formalism is specially suitable for effective field theories in which the bare elementary states are integrated out but that give rise to resonance and bound states when implemented in nonperturbative calculations. We demonstrate that $X=1$ for finite-range energy-independent potentials, either regular or singular. A non-trivial example for an energy-dependent potential is discussed where it is shown that $X$ is independent of any type of cutoff regulator employed. The generalization of these techniques to relativistic states is developed. We also explain how to obtain a meaningful compositeness with respect to the open channels for resonances, even if it is complex in a first turn, by making use of suitable phase-factor transformations. Defining elementariness as $X=0$, we derive a new universal criterion for the elementariness of a bound state. Along the same lines, a necessary condition for a resonance to be qualified as elementary is given. The application of the formalism here developed might be of considerable practical interest.

We propose a novel constraint on the gauge dynamics of strongly interacting gauge theories stemming from the a theorem. The inequality we suggest is used to provide a lower bound on the conformal window of four dimensional gauge theories.
We calculate the unpolarized and polarized three--loop anomalous dimensions and splitting functions $P_{rm NS}^+, P_{rm NS}^-$ and $P_{rm NS}^{rm s}$ in QCD in the $overline{sf MS}$ scheme by using the traditional method of space--like off shell massless operator matrix elements. This is a gauge--dependent framework. For the first time we also calculate the three--loop anomalous dimensions $P_{rm NS}^{rm pm tr}$ for transversity directly. We compare our results to the literature.
We study the dependence on the quark mass of the compositeness of the lowest-lying odd parity hyperon states. Thus, we pay attention to $Lambda-$like states in the strange, charm and beauty, sectors which are dynamically generated using a unitarized meson-baryon model. In the strange sector we use an SU(6) extension of the Weinberg-Tomozawa meson-baryon interaction, and we further implement the heavy-quark spin symmetry to construct the meson-baryon interaction when charmed or beauty hadrons are involved. In the three examined flavor sectors, we obtain two $J^P=1/2^-$ and one $J^P=3/2^-$ $Lambda$ states. We find that the $Lambda$ states which are bound states (the three $Lambda_b$) or narrow resonances (one $Lambda(1405)$ and one $Lambda_c(2595)$) are well described as molecular states composed of $s$-wave meson-baryon pairs. The $frac{1}{2}^-$ wide $Lambda(1405)$ and $Lambda_c(2595)$ as well as the $frac{3}{2}^-$ $Lambda(1520)$ and $Lambda_c(2625)$ states display smaller compositeness and so they would require new mechanisms, such as $d$-wave interactions.
We discuss the emergence of bound states in the low-energy spectrum of the string-net Hamiltonian in the presence of a string tension. In the ladder geometry, we show that a single bound state arises either for a finite tension or in the zero-tension limit depending on the theory considered. In the latter case, we perturbatively compute the binding energy as a function of the total quantum dimension. We also address this issue in the honeycomb lattice where the number of bound states in the topological phase depends on the total quantum dimension. Finally, the internal structure of these bound states is analyzed in the zero-tension limit.
We investigate a recently proposed UV-complete composite Higgs scenario in the light of the first LHC runs. The model is based on a $SU(4)$ gauge group with global flavour symmetry breaking $SU(5) to SO(5)$, giving rise to pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons in addition to the Higgs doublet. This includes a real and a complex electroweak triplet with exotic electric charges. Including these, as well as constraints on other exotic states, we show that LHC measurements are not yet sensitive enough to significantly constrain the models low energy constants. The Higgs potential is described by two parameters which are on the one hand constrained by the LHC measurement of the Higgs mass and Higgs decay channels and on the other hand can be computed from correlation functions in the UV-complete theory. Hence to exclude the model at least one constant needs to be determined and to validate the Higgs potential both constants need to be reproduced by the UV-theory. Due to its UV-formulation, a certain number of low energy constants can be computed from first principle numerical simulations of the theory formulated on a lattice, which can help in establishing the validity of this model. We assess the potential impact of lattice calculations for phenomenological studies, as a preliminary step towards Monte Carlo simulations.
