We provide a nonperturbative theory for photoionization of transparent solids. By applying a particular steepest-descent method, we derive analytical expressions for the photoionization rate within the two-band structure model, which consistently account for the $selection$ $rules$ related to the parity of the number of absorbed photons ($odd$ or $even$). We demonstrate the crucial role of the interference of the transition amplitudes (saddle-points), which in the semi-classical limit, can be interpreted in terms of interfering quantum trajectories. Keldyshs foundational work of laser physics [Sov. Phys. JETP 20, 1307 (1965)] disregarded this interference, resulting in the violation of $selection$ $rules$. We provide an improved Keldysh photoionization theory and show its excellent agreement with measurements for the frequency dependence of the two-photon absorption and nonlinear refractive index coefficients in dielectrics.

Nonlinear photoionization of dielectrics and semiconductors is widely treated in the frames of the Keldysh theory whose validity is limited to small photon energies compared to the band gap and relatively low laser intensities. The time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) simulations, which are free of these limitations, enable to gain insight into non-equilibrium dynamics of the electronic structure. Here we apply the TDDFT to investigate photoionization of silicon crystal by ultrashort laser pulses in a wide range of laser wavelengths and intensities and compare the results with predictions of the Keldysh theory. Photoionization rates derived from the simulations considerably exceed the data obtained with the Keldysh theory within the validity range of the latter. Possible reasons of the discrepancy are discussed and we provide fundamental data on the photoionization rates beyond the limits of the Keldysh theory. By investigating the features of the Stark shift as a function of photon energy and laser field strength, a manifestation of the transient Wannier-Stark ladder states have been revealed which become blurred with increasing laser field strength. Finally, it is shown that the TDDFT simulations can potentially provide reliable data on the electron damping time that is of high importance for large-scale modeling.
The validity of the structure-property relationships governing the deformation behavior of bcc metals was brought into question with recent {it ab initio} density functional studies of isolated screw dislocations in Mo and Ta. These existing relationships were semiclassical in nature, having grown from atomistic investigations of the deformation properties of the groups V and VI transition metals. We find that the correct form for these structure-property relationships is fully quantum mechanical, involving the coupling of electronic states with the strain field at the core of long $a/2<111>$ screw dislocations.
We derive the generalized magneto-absorption spectra for curved graphene nanorib- bons and carbon nanotubes by using the Peierls tight-binding model. The main spectral characteristics and the optical selection rules result from the cooperative or competitive relationships between the geometric structure and a magnetic field. In curved ribbons, the dominant selection rule remains unchanged during the variation of the curvature. When the arc angle increases, the prominent peaks are split, with some even vanishing as the angle exceeds a critical value. In carbon nanotubes, the angular-momentum coupling induces extra selection rules, of which more are revealed due to the increase of either (both) of the factors: tube diameter and field strength. Particularly once the two factors exceed certain critical values, the optical spectra could reflect the quasi-Landau-level structures. The identifying features of the spec- tra provide insight into optical excitations for curved systems with either open or closed boundary condition.
Extraordinary optical transmission is observed due to the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in 2-Dimensional hexagonal anti-dot patterns of pure Ni thin films, grown on sapphire substrates. A strong enhancement of the polar Kerr rotation is recorded at the surface plasmon related transmission maximum. Angular resolved reflectivity measurements under an applied field, reveal an enhancement and a shift of the normalized reflectivity difference upon reversal of the magnetic saturation (transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect-TMOKE). The change of the TMOKE signal clearly shows the magnetic field modulation of the dispersion relation of SPPs launched in a 2D patterned ferromagnetic Ni film.
A most basic and puzzling enigma in surface science is the description of the dissociative adsorption of O2 at the (111) surface of Al. Already for the sticking curve alone, the disagreement between experiment and results of state-of-the-art first-principles calculations can hardly be more dramatic. In this paper we show that this is caused by hitherto unaccounted spin selection rules, which give rise to a highly non-adiabatic behavior in the O2/Al(111) interaction. We also discuss problems caused by the insufficient accuracy of present-day exchange-correlation functionals.
