We have used soft x-ray photoemission electron microscopy to image the magnetization of single domain La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ nano-islands arranged in geometrically frustrated configurations such as square ice and kagome ice geometries. Upon thermal randomization, ensembles of nano-islands with strong inter-island magnetic coupling relax towards low-energy configurations. Statistical analysis shows that the likelihood of ensembles falling into low-energy configurations depends strongly on the annealing temperature. Annealing to just below the Curie temperature of the ferromagnetic film (T$_{C}$ = 338 K) allows for a much greater probability of achieving low energy configurations as compared to annealing above the Curie temperature. At this thermally active temperature of 325 K, the ensemble of ferromagnetic nano-islands explore their energy landscape over time and eventually transition to lower energy states as compared to the frozen-in configurations obtained upon cooling from above the Curie temperature. Thus, this materials system allows for a facile method to systematically study thermal evolution of artificial spin ice arrays of nano-islands at temperatures modestly above room temperature.

The ideal diode is a theoretical concept that completely conducts the electric current under forward bias without any loss and that behaves like a perfect insulator under reverse bias. However, real diodes have a junction barrier that electrons have to overcome and thus they have a threshold voltage $V_T$, which must be supplied to the diode to turn it on. This threshold voltage gives rise to power dissipation in the form of heat and hence is an undesirable feature. In this work, based on half-metallic magnets and spin-gapless semiconductors we propose a diode concept that does not have a junction barrier and the operation principle of which relies on the spin-dependent transport properties of the HMM and SGS materials. We show that the HMM and SGS materials form an Ohmic contact under any finite forward bias, while for a reverse bias the current is blocked due to spin-dependent filtering of the electrons. Thus, the HMM-SGS junctions act as a diode with zero threshold voltage $V_T$, and linear $I-V$ characteristics as well as an infinite on:off ratio at zero temperature. However, at finite temperatures, non-spin-flip thermally excited high-energy electrons as well as low-energy spin-flip excitations can give rise to a leakage current and thus reduce the on:off ratio under a reverse bias. Furthermore, a zero threshold voltage allows one to detect extremely weak signals and due to the Ohmic HMM-SGS contact, the proposed diode has a much higher current drive capability and low resistance, which is advantageous compared to conventional semiconductor diodes. We employ the NEGF method combined with DFT to demonstrate the linear $I-V$ characteristics of the proposed diode based on two-dimensional half-metallic Fe/MoS$_2$ and spin-gapless semiconducting VS$_2$ planar heterojunctions.
We present flatspin, a novel simulator for systems of interacting mesoscopic spins on a lattice, also known as artificial spin ice (ASI). Our magnetic switching criteria enables ASI dynamics to be captured in a dipole model. Through GPU acceleration, flatspin can simulate realistic dynamics of millions of magnets within practical time frames. We demonstrate flatspins versatility through the reproduction of a diverse set of established experimental results from the literature. In particular, magnetization details of pinwheel ASI during field-driven reversal have been reproduced, for the first time, by a dipole model. The simulation framework enables quick exploration and investigation of new ASI geometries and properties at unprecedented speeds.

The RMn2O5 (R=Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu) oxides showing magnetoelectric (ME) behavior have been prepared in polycrystalline form by a standard citrate route. The lattice parameters, obtained from the powder XRD analysis, follow the rare-earth contraction indicating the trivalent character of the R ions. Cusp-like anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility curve and sharp peaks in the specific heat were reported at the corresponding temperatures in RMn2O5 (R=Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu) indicating the magnetic or electric ordering transitions.
We have performed a detailed study of thermal annealing of the moment configuration in artificial spin ice. Permalloy (Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$) artificial spin ice samples were examined in the prototypical square ice geometry, studying annealing as a function of island thickness, island shape, and annealing temperature and duration. We also measured the Curie temperature as a function of film thickness, finding that thickness has a strong effect on the Curie temperature in regimes of relevance to many studies of the dynamics of artificial spin ice systems. Increasing the interaction energy between island moments and reducing the energy barrier to flipping the island moments allows the system to more closely approach the collective low energy state of the moments upon annealing, suggesting new channels for understanding the thermalization processes in these important model systems.

Recently, significant interest has emerged in fabricated systems that mimic the behavior of geometrically-frustrated materials. We present the full realization of such an artificial spin ice system on a two-dimensional kagome lattice and demonstrate rigid adherence to the local ice rule by directly counting individual pseudo-spins. The resulting spin configurations show not only local ice rules and long-range disorder, but also correlations consistent with spin ice Monte Carlo calculations. Our results suggest that dipolar corrections are significant in this system, as in pyrochlore spin ice, and they open a door to further studies of frustration in general.
