We study the behavior of real-normalized (RN) meromorphic differentials on Riemann surfaces under degeneration. We determine all possible limits of RN differentials in degenerating sequences of smooth curves, and describe the limit in terms of solutions of the corresponding Kirchhoff problem. We further show that the limit of zeroes of RN differentials is the set of zeroes of a twisted meromorphic RN differential, which we explicitly construct. Our main new tool is an explicit solution of the jump problem on Riemann surfaces in plumbing coordinates, by using the Cauchy kernel on the normalization of the nodal curve. Since this kernel does not depend on plumbing coordinates, we are able to approximate the RN differential on a smooth plumbed curve by a collection of meromorphic differentials on the irreducible components of a stable curve, with an explicit bound on the precision of such approximation. This allows us to also study these approximating differentials at suitable scales, so that the limit under degeneration is not identically zero. These methods can be applied more generally to study degenerations of differentials on Riemann surfaces satisfying various conditions.

Given an open subset U of a projective curve Y and a smooth family f:V-->U of curves, with semi-stable reduction over Y, we show that for a sub variation of Hodge structures of rank >2 the Arakelov inequality must be strict. For families of n-folds we prove a similar result under the assumption that the (n,0) component of the Higgs bundle defines fibrewise a birational map.
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g>1$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic zero and $O$ one of the $(2g+2)$ Weierstrass points in $C(K)$. Let $J$ be the jacobian of $C$, which is a $g$-dimensional abelian variety over $K$. Let us consider the canonical embedding of $C$ into $J$ that sends $O$ to the zero of the group law on $J$. This embedding allows us to identify $C(K)$ with a certain subset of the commutative group $J(K)$. A special case of the famous theorem of Raynaud (Manin--Mumford conjecture) asserts that the set of torsion points in $C(K)$ is finite. It is well known that the points of order 2 in $C(K)$ are exactly the remaining $(2g+1)$ Weierstrass points. One of the authors proved that there are no torsion points of order $n$ in $C(K)$ if $3le nle 2g$. So, it is natural to study torsion points of order $2g+1$ (notice that the number of such points in $C(K)$ is always even). Recently, the authors proved that there are infinitely many (for a given $g$) mutually nonisomorphic pairs $C,O)$ such that $C(K)$ contains at least four points of order $2g+1$. In the present paper we prove that (for a given $g$) there are at most finitely many (up to a isomorphism) pairs $(C,O)$ such that $C(K)$ contains at least six points of order $2g+1$.
We show that codimension one distributions with at most isolated singularities on certain smooth projective threefolds with Picard rank one have stable tangent sheaves. The ideas in the proof of this fact are then applied to the characterization of certain irreducible components of the moduli space of stable rank 2 reflexive sheaves on $mathbb{P}^3$, and to the construction of stable rank 2 reflexive sheaves with prescribed Chern classes on general threefolds. We also prove that if $mathscr{G}$ is a subfoliation of a codimension one distribution $mathscr{F}$ with isolated singularities, then $Sing(mathscr{G})$ is a curve. As a consequence, we give a criterion to decide whether $mathscr{G}$ is globally given as the intersection of $mathscr{F}$ with another codimension one distribution. Turning our attention to codimension one distributions with non isolated singularities, we determine the number of connected components of the pure 1-dimensional component of the singular scheme.
We study foliations by curves on the three-dimensional projective space with no isolated singularities, which is equivalent to assuming that the conormal sheaf is locally free. We provide a classification of such foliations by curves up to degree 3, also describing the possible singular schemes. In particular, we prove that foliations by curves of degree 1 or 2 are either contained on a pencil of planes or legendrian, and are given by the complete intersection of two codimension one distributions. We prove that the conormal sheaf of a foliation by curves of degree 3 with reduced singular scheme either splits as a sum of line bundles or is an instanton bundle. For degree larger than 3, we focus on two classes of foliations by curves, namely legendrian foliations and those whose conormal sheaf is a twisted null correlation bundle. We give characterizations of such foliations, describe their singular schemes and their moduli spaces.
The paper provides a description of the sheaves of Kahler differentials of the arc space and jet schemes of an arbitrary scheme where these sheaves are computed directly from the sheaf of differentials of the given scheme. Several applications on the structure of arc spaces are presented.
