A number of planetary nebulae show binary central stars and significant abundance discrepancies between values estimated from colisionally excited lines when compared to the same abundances estimated from recombination lines. One approach to investigate this yet unsolved problem is using spatially resolved images of emission lines in an attempt to detect a possibly distinct metal rich component in the nebula. In this work we present results of spatially resolved bundance analysis of NGC 6778 based on data gathered from VLT VIMOS-IFU. We discuss the spatial variations found as well as possible limitations of the method in answering questions about abundance variations.

We selected 90 massive star-forming clumps with strong N2H+, HCO+, HCN, and HNC emission from the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90 GHz survey. We obtained Herschel data for all 90 sources and NRAO VLA Sky Survey data for 51 of them. We convolved and regridded all images to the same resolution and pixel size and derived the temperature, H2 column density, molecules abundances and abundance, and ratios of each pixel. Our analysis yields three main conclusions. First, the abundances of N2H+, HCO+, HCN, and HNC increase when the column density decreases and the temperature increases, with spatial variations in their abundances dominated by changes in the H2 column density. Second, the abundance ratios between N2H+, HCO+, HCN, and HNC also display systemic variations as a function of the column density due to the chemical properties of these molecules. Third, the sources associated with the 20 cm continuum emission can be classified into four types based on the behavior of the abundances of the four molecules considered here as a function of this emission. The variations of the first three types could also be attributed to the variation of the H2 column density.
We present optical VLT/MUSE integral field spectroscopy data of the merging galaxy NGC 1487. We use fitting techniques to study the ionized gas emission of this merger and its main morphological and kinematical properties. We measured flat and sometimes inverted oxygen abundance gradients in the subsystems composing NGC 1487, explained by metal mixing processes common in merging galaxies. We also measured widespread star-forming bursts, indicating that photoionisation by stars is the primary ionization source of the galaxy. The kinematic map revealed a rotating pattern in the gas in the northern tail of the system, suggesting that the galaxy may be in the process of rebuilding a disc. The gas located in the central region has larger velocity dispersion ($sigmaapprox 50$ km s$^{-1}$) than the remaining regions, indicating kinematic heating, possibly owing to the ongoing interaction. Similar trends were, however, not observed in the stellar velocity-dispersion map, indicating that the galaxy has not yet achieved equilibrium, and the nebular and stellar components are still kinematically decoupled. Based on all our measurements and findings, and specially on the mass estimates, metallicity gradients and velocity fields of the system, we propose that NGC 1487 is the result of an ongoing merger event involving smallish dwarf galaxies within a group, in a pre-merger phase, resulting in a relic with mass and physical parameters similar to a dwarf galaxy. Thus, we may be witnessing the formation of a dwarf galaxy by merging of smaller clumps at z=0.
For studies of galaxy formation and evolution, one of the major benefits of the James Webb Space Telescope is that space-based IFUs like those on its NIRSpec and MIRI instruments will enable spatially resolved spectroscopy of distant galaxies, including spectroscopy at the scale of individual star-forming regions in galaxies that have been gravitationally lensed. In the meantime, there is only a very small subset of lensed sources where work like this is possible even with the Hubble Space Telescopes Wide Field Camera 3 infrared channel grisms. We examine two of these sources, SDSS J1723+3411 and SDSS J2340+2947, using HST WFC3/IR grism data and supporting spatially-unresolved spectroscopy from several ground-based instruments to explore the size of spatial variations in observed strong emission line ratios like O32, R23, which are sensitive to ionization parameter and metallicity, and the Balmer decrement as an indicator of reddening. We find significant spatial variation in the reddening and the reddening-corrected O32 and R23 values which correspond to spreads of a few tenths of a dex in ionization parameter and metallicity. We also find clear evidence of a negative radial gradient in star formation in SDSS J2340+2947 and tentative evidence of one in SDSS J1723+3411, though its star formation is quite asymmetric. Finally, we find that reddening can vary enough spatially to make spatially-resolved reddening corrections necessary in order to characterize gradients in line ratios and the physical conditions inferred from them, necessitating the use of space-based IFUs for future work on larger, more statistically robust samples.
Optical integral-field spectroscopy was used to investigate the planetary nebula NGC 3242. We analysed the main morphological components of this source, including its knots, but not the halo. In addition to revealing the properties ofthe physical and chemical nature of this nebula, we also provided reliable spatially resolved constraints that can be used for future photoionisation modelling of the nebula. The latter is ultimately necessary to obtain a fully self-consistent 3D picture of the physical and chemical properties of the object. The observations were obtained with the VIMOS instrument attached to VLT-UT3. Maps and values for specific morphological zones for the detected emission-lines were obtained and analysed with routines developed by the authors to derive physical and chemical conditions of the ionised gas in a 2D fashion. We obtained spatially resolved maps and mean values of the electron densities, temperatures, and chemical abundances, for specific morphological structures in NGC 3242. These results show the pixel-to-pixel variations of the the small- and large-scale structures of the source. These diagnostic maps provide information free from the biases introduced by traditional single long-slit observations. In general, our results are consistent with a uniform abundance distribution for the object, whether we look at abundance maps or integrated fluxes from specified morphological structures. The results indicate that special care should be taken with the calibration of the data and that only data with extremely good signal-to-noise ratio and spectral coverage should be used to ensure the detection of possible spatial variations.
To observationally explore physical processes, we present a multi-wavelength study of a wide-scale environment toward l = 13.7 - 14.9 degrees containing a mid-infrared bubble N14. The analysis of 12CO, 13CO, and C18O gas at [31.6, 46] km/s reveals an extended physical system (extension ~59 pc x 29 pc), which hosts at least five groups of the ATLASGAL 870 micron dust clumps at d ~3.1 kpc. These spatially-distinct groups/sub-regions contain unstable molecular clumps, and are associated with several Class I young stellar objects (mean age ~0.44 Myr). At least three groups of ATLASGAL clumps associated with the expanding HII regions (including the bubble N14) and embedded infrared dark clouds, devoid of the ionized gas, are found in the system. The observed spectral indices derived using the GMRT and THOR radio continuum data suggest the presence of non-thermal emission with the HII regions. High resolution GMRT radio continuum map at 1280 MHz traces several ionized clumps powered by massive B-type stars toward N14, which are considerably young (age ~10^3 - 10^4 years). Locally, early stage of star formation is evident toward all the groups of clumps. The position-velocity maps of 12CO, 13CO, and C18O exhibit an oscillatory-like velocity pattern toward the selected longitude range. Considering the presence of different groups/sub-regions in the system, the oscillatory pattern in velocity is indicative of the fragmentation process. All these observed findings favour the applicability of the global collapse scenario in the extended physical system, which also seems to explain the observed hierarchy.
