In optical wireless scattering communication, received signal in each symbol interval is captured by a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and then sampled through very short but finite interval sampling. The resulting samples form a signal vector for symbol detection. The upper and lower bounds on transmission rate of such a processing system are studied. It is shown that the gap between two bounds approaches zero as the thermal noise and shot noise variances approach zero. The maximum a posteriori (MAP) signal detection is performed and a low computational complexity receiver is derived under piecewise polynomial approximation. Meanwhile, the threshold based signal detection is also studied, where two threshold selection rules are proposed based on the detection error probability and the Kullback-Leibler (KL) distance. For the latter, it is shown that the KL distance is not sensitive to the threshold selection for small shot and thermal noise variances, and thus the threshold can be selected among a wide range without significant loss from the optimal KL distance. The performances of the transmission rate bounds, the signal detection, and the threshold selection approaches are evaluated by the numerical results.
Probabilistic shaping based on constant composition distribution matching (CCDM) has received considerable attention as a way to increase the capacity of fiber optical communication systems. CCDM suffers from significant rate loss at short blocklengths and requires long blocklengths to achieve high shaping gain, which makes its implementation very challenging. In this paper, we propose to use enumerative sphere shaping (ESS) and investigate its performance for the nonlinear fiber optical channel. ESS has lower rate loss than CCDM at the same shaping rate, which makes it a suitable candidate to be implemented in real-time high-speed optical systems. In this paper, we first show that finite blocklength ESS and CCDM exhibit higher effective signal-to-noise ratio than their infinite blocklength counterparts. These results show that for the nonlinear fiber optical channel, large blocklengths should be avoided. We then show that for a 400 Gb/s dual-polarization 64-QAM WDM transmission system, ESS with short blocklengths outperforms both uniform signaling and CCDM. Gains in terms of both bit-metric decoding rate and bit-error rate are presented. ESS with a blocklength of 200 is shown to provide an extension reach of about 200 km in comparison with CCDM with the same blocklength. The obtained reach increase of ESS with a blocklength of 200 over uniform signaling is approximately 450 km (approximately 19%)
Optical communication systems, which operate at very high rates, are often limited by the sampling rate bottleneck. The optical wideband regime may exceed analog to digital converters (ADCs) front-end bandwidth. Multi-channel sampling approaches, such as multicoset or interleaved ADCs, have been proposed to sample the wideband signal using several channels. Each channel samples below the Nyquist rate such that the overall sampling rate is preserved. However, this scheme suffers from two practical limitations that make its implementation difficult. First, the inherent anti-aliasing filter of the samplers distorts the wideband signal. Second, it requires accurate time shifts on the order of the signals Nyquist rate, which are challenging to maintain. In this work, we propose an alternative multi-channel sampling scheme, the wideband demodulator for optical waveforms (WINDOW), based on analog RF demodulation, where each channel aliases the spectrum using a periodic mixing function before integration and sampling. We show that intentionally using the inherent ADC filter to perform integration increases the signal to noise ratio (SNR). We demonstrate both theoretically and through numerical experiments that our system outperforms multicoset in terms of signal recovery and symbol estimation in the presence of both thermal and quantization noise but is slightly less robust to timing jitter.
In a wireless network that conveys status updates from sources (i.e., sensors) to destinations, one of the key issues studied by existing literature is how to design an optimal source sampling strategy on account of the communication constraints which are often modeled as queues. In this paper, an alternative perspective is presented -- a novel status-aware communication scheme, namely emph{parallel communications}, is proposed which allows sensors to be communication-agnostic. Specifically, the proposed scheme can determine, based on an online prediction functionality, whether a status packet is worth transmitting considering both the network condition and status prediction, such that sensors can generate status packets without communication constraints. We evaluate the proposed scheme on a Software-Defined-Radio (SDR) test platform, which is integrated with a collaborative autonomous driving simulator, i.e., Simulation-of-Urban-Mobility (SUMO), to produce realistic vehicle control models and road conditions. The results show that with online status predictions, the channel occupancy is significantly reduced, while guaranteeing low status recovery error. Then the framework is applied to two scenarios: a multi-density platooning scenario, and a flight formation control scenario. Simulation results show that the scheme achieves better performance on the network level, in terms of keeping the minimum safe distance in both vehicle platooning and flight control.
Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a novel burgeoning concept, which possesses advantages in enhancing wireless communication and user localization, while maintaining low hardware cost and energy consumption. Herein, we establish an IRS-aided mmWave-MIMO based joint localization and communication system (IMM-JLCS), and probe into its performance evaluation and optimization design. Specifically, first, we provide the signal, channel and estimation error models, and contrive the working process of the IMM-JLCS in detail. Then, by configuring appropriate IRS phase shifts, we derive the closed-form expressions of the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) of the position/orientation estimation errors and the effective achievable data rate (EADR), with respect to the time allocation ratio of the beam alignment and localization stage (BALS). Subsequently, we investigate the trade-off between the two performance metrics, for which we propose a joint optimization algorithm. Finally, we carry out simulations and comparisons to view the trade-off and validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, in the presence of distinct levels of estimation uncertainty and user mobility. Our results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can find the joint optimal solution for the position/orientation estimation accuracy and EADR, with its optimization performance being robust to slight localization or channel estimation errors and user mobility.
This paper studies unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled wireless communication, where a rotarywing UAV is dispatched to send/collect data to/from multiple ground nodes (GNs). We aim to minimize the total UAV energy consumption, including both propulsion energy and communication related energy, while satisfying the communication throughput requirement of each GN. To this end, we first derive an analytical propulsion power consumption model for rotary-wing UAVs, and then formulate the energy minimization problem by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory and communication time allocation among GNs, as well as the total mission completion time. The problem is difficult to be optimally solved, as it is non-convex and involves infinitely many variables over time. To tackle this problem, we first consider the simple fly-hover-communicate design, where the UAV successively visits a set of hovering locations and communicates with one corresponding GN when hovering at each location. For this design, we propose an efficient algorithm to optimize the hovering locations and durations, as well as the flying trajectory connecting these hovering locations, by leveraging the travelling salesman problem (TSP) and convex optimization techniques. Next, we consider the general case where the UAV communicates also when flying. We propose a new path discretization method to transform the original problem into a discretized equivalent with a finite number of optimization variables, for which we obtain a locally optimal solution by applying the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. Numerical results show the significant performance gains of the proposed designs over benchmark schemes, in achieving energy-efficient communication with rotary-wing UAVs.
