Spectral heat kernel/zeta function regularization procedures are employed in this paper to control the divergences arising from vacuum fluctuations of Bogomolnyi-Prasad-Sommerfield vortices in the Abelian Higgs model. Zero modes of vortex fluctuations are the source of difficulties appearing when the standard Gilkey-de Witt expansion is performed. A modified GdW expansion is developed to diminish the impact of the infrared divergences due to the vortex zero modes. With this new technique at our disposal we compute the one-loop vortex mass shift in the planar AHM and the quantum corrections to the string tension of the magnetic flux tubes living in three dimensions. In both cases it is observed that weak repulsive forces surge between these classically non interacting topological defects caused by vacuum quantum fluctuations.

We study the spectrum of fermionic modes on cosmic string loops. We find no fermionic zero modes nor massive bound states - this implies that vortons stabilized by fermionic currents do not exist. We have also studied kink-(anti)kink and vortex-(anti)vortex systems and find that all systems that have vanishing net topological charge do not support fermionic bound modes.
It has been suggested a long time ago by W. Bardeen that non-vanishing of the one-loop same helicity YM amplitudes, in particular such an amplitude at four points, should be interpreted as an anomaly. However, the available derivations of these amplitudes are rather far from supporting this interpretation in that they share no similarity whatsoever with the standard triangle diagram chiral anomaly calculation. We provide a new computation of the same helicity four-point amplitude by a method designed to mimic the chiral anomaly derivation. This is done by using the momentum conservation to rewrite the logarithmically divergent four-point amplitude as a sum of linearly and then quadratically divergent integrals. These integrals are then seen to vanish after appropriate shifts of the loop momentum integration variable. The amplitude thus gets related to shifts, and these are computed in the standard textbook way. We thus reproduce the usual result but by a method which greatly strengthens the case for an anomaly interpretation of these amplitudes.
In this paper we study the zero energy solutions of the Dirac equation in the background of a $Z_2$ vortex of a non-Abelian gauge model with three charged scalar fields. We determine the number of the fermionic zero modes giving their explicit form for two specific Ansatze.

We consider $alpha$ corrections to the one-loop four-point correlator of the stress-tensor multiplet in $mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills at order $1/N^4$. Holographically, this is dual to string corrections of the one-loop supergravity amplitude on AdS$_5times$S$^5$. While this correlator has been considered in Mellin space before, we derive the corresponding position space results, gaining new insights into the analytic structure of AdS loop-amplitudes. Most notably, the presence of a transcendental weight three function involving new singularities is required, which has not appeared in the context of AdS amplitudes before. We thereby confirm the structure of string corrected one-loop Mellin amplitudes, and also provide new explicit results at orders in $alpha$ not considered before.
In this Letter, we provide evidence for a new double-copy structure in one-loop amplitudes of the open superstring. Their integrands with respect to the moduli space of genus-one surfaces are cast into a form where gauge-invariant kinematic factors and certain functions of the punctures -- so-called generalized elliptic integrands -- enter on completely symmetric footing. In particular, replacing the generalized elliptic integrands by a second copy of kinematic factors maps one-loop open-string correlators to gravitational matrix elements of the higher-curvature operator R^4.
