Caustic singularity formations in shift-symmetric $k$-essence and Horndeski theories on a fixed Minkowski spacetime were recently argued. In $n$ dimensions, this singularity is the $(n-2)$-dimensional plane in spacetime at which second derivatives of a field diverge and the field loses single-valued description for its evolution. This does not necessarily imply a pathological behavior of the system but rather invalidates the effective description. The effective theory would thus have to be replaced by another to describe the evolution thereafter. In this paper, adopting the planar-symmetric $1$+$1$-dimensional approach employed in the original analysis, we seek all $k$-essence theories in which generic simple wave solutions are free from such caustic singularities. Contrary to the previous claim, we find that not only the standard canonical scalar but also the DBI scalar are free from caustics, as far as planar-symmetric simple wave solutions are concerned. Addition of shift-symmetric Horndeski terms does not change the conclusion.

We study a model of two scalar fields with a hyperbolic field space and show that it reduces to a single-field Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) model in the limit where the field space becomes infinitely curved. We apply the de Sitter swampland conjecture to the two-field model and take the same limit. It is shown that in the limit, all quantities appearing in the swampland conjecture remain well-defined within the single-field DBI model. Based on a consistency argument, we then speculate that the condition derived in this way can be considered as the de Sitter swampland conjecture for a DBI scalar field by its own. The condition differs from those proposed in the literature and only the one in the present paper passes the consistency argument. As a byproduct, we also point out that one of the inequalities in the swampland conjecture for a multi-field model with linear kinetic terms should involve the lowest mass squared for scalar perturbations and that this quantity can be significantly different from the lowest eigenvalue of the Hessian of the potential in the local orthonormal frame if the field space is highly curved. Finally, we propose an extension of the de Sitter swampland conjecture to a more general scalar field with the Lagrangian of the form $P(X,varphi)$, where $X=-(partialvarphi)^2/2$.
We consider modifications of general relativity characterized by a special noncovariant constraint on metric coefficients, which effectively generates a perfect-fluid type of matter stress tensor in Einstein equations. Such class of modified gravity models includes recently suggested generalized unimodular gravity (GUMG) theory and its simplest version -- unimodular gravity (UMG). We make these gravity models covariant by introducing four Stueckelberg fields and show that in the case of generalized unimodular gravity three out of these fields dynamically decouple. This means that the covariant form of generalized unimodular gravity is dynamically equivalent to k-essence theory with a specific Lagrangian which can be reconstructed from the parameters of GUMG theory. We provide the examples, where such reconstruction can be done explicitly, and briefly discuss theories beyond GUMG, related to self-gravitating media models. Also we compare GUMG k-inflation with cuscuton models of dynamically inert k-essence field and discuss motivation for GUMG coming from effective field theory.
We consider the impact of a weakly coupled environment comprising a light scalar field on the open dynamics of a quantum probe field, resulting in a master equation for the probe field that features corrections to the coherent dynamics, as well as decoherence and momentum diffusion. The light scalar is assumed to couple to matter either through a nonminimal coupling to gravity or, equivalently, through a Higgs portal. Motivated by applications to experiments such as atom interferometry, we assume that the probe field can be initialized, by means of external driving, in a state that is not an eigenstate of the light scalar-field--probe system, and we derive the master equation for single-particle matrix elements of the reduced density operator of a toy model. We comment on the possibilities for experimental detection and the related challenges, and highlight possible pathways for further improvements. This derivation of the master equation requires techniques of non-equilibrium quantum field theory, including the Feynman-Vernon influence functional and thermo field dynamics, used to motivate a method of Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann-like reduction. In order to obtain cutoff-independent results for the probe-field dynamics, we find that it is necessary to use a time-dependent renormalization procedure. Specifically, we show that non-Markovian effects following a quench, namely the violation of time-translational invariance due to finite-time effects, lead to a time-dependent modulation of the usual vacuum counterterms.

In this paper we revisit the dynamical dark energy model building based on single scalar field involving higher derivative terms. By imposing a degenerate condition on the higher derivatives in curved spacetime, one can select the models which are free from the ghost mode and the equation of state is able to cross the cosmological constant boundary smoothly, dynamically violate the null energy condition. Generally the Lagrangian of this type of dark energy models depends on the second derivatives linearly. It behaves like an imperfect fluid, thus its cosmological perturbation theory needs to be generalized. We also study such a model with explicit form of degenerate Lagrangian and show that its equation of state may cross -1 without any instability.
We study a free scalar field $phi$ in a fixed curved background spacetime subject to a higher derivative field equation of the form $F(Box)phi =0$, where $F$ is a polynomial of the form $F(Box)= prod_i (Box-m_i^2)$ and all masses $m_i$ are distinct and real. Using an auxiliary field method to simplify the calculations, we obtain expressions for the Belinfante-Rosenfeld symmetric energy-momentum tensor and compare it with the canonical energy-momentum tensor when the background is Minkowski spacetime. We also obtain the conserved symplectic current necessary for quantisation and briefly discuss the issue of negative energy versus negative norm and its relation to Reflection Positivity in Euclidean treatments. We study, without assuming spherical symmetry, the possible existence of finite energy static solutions of the scalar equations, in static or stationary background geometries. Subject to various assumptions on the potential, we establish non-existence results including a no-scalar-hair theorem for static black holes. We consider Pais-Uhlenbeck field theories in a cosmological de Sitter background, and show how the Hubble friction may eliminate what would otherwise be unstable behaviour when interactions are included.
