We argue that tetragonal CuO (T-CuO) has the potential to finally settle long-standing modelling issues for cuprate physics. We compare the one-hole quasiparticle (qp) dispersion of T-CuO to that of cuprates, in the framework of the strongly-correlated ($U_{dd}rightarrow infty$) limit of the three-band Emery model. Unlike in CuO$_2$, magnetic frustration in T-CuO breaks the $C_4$ rotational symmetry and leads to strong deviations from the Zhang-Rice singlet picture in parts of the reciprocal space. Our results are consistent with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data but in sharp contradiction to those of a one-band model previously suggested for them. These differences identify T-CuO as an ideal material to test a variety of scenarios proposed for explaining cuprate phenomenology.

Unrevealing local magnetic and electronic correlations in the vicinity of charge carriers is crucial in order to understand rich physical properties in correlated electron systems. Here, using high-energy optical conductivity (up to 35 eV) as a function of temperature and polarization, we observe a surprisingly strong spin polarization of the local spin singlet with enhanced ferromagnetic correlations between Cu spins near the doped holes in lightly hole-doped La$_{1.95}$Sr$_{0.05}$Cu$_{0.95}$Zn$_{0.05}$O$_{4}$. The changes of the local spin polarization manifest strongly in the temperature-dependent optical conductivity at ~7.2 eV, with an anomaly at the magnetic stripe phase (~25 K), accompanied by anomalous spectral-weight transfer in a broad energy range. Supported by theoretical calculations, we also assign high-energy optical transitions and their corresponding temperature dependence, particularly at ~2.5 ~8.7, ~9.7, ~11.3 and ~21.8 eV. Our result shows the importance of a strong mixture of spin singlet and triplet states in hole-doped cuprates and demonstrates a new strategy to probe local magnetic correlations using high- energy optical conductivity in correlated electron systems.
The total spectral weight textit{S} of the emergent low-energy quasipaticles in high-temperature superconductors is explored by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. In order to examine the applicability of the Hubbard model, regimes that cover from zero doping to overdoping are investigated. In contrast to mean field theory, we found that textit{S} deviates from linear dependence on the doping level textit{p}. The slope of textit{S} versus textit{p} changes continuously throughout the whole doping range with no sign of saturation up to textit{p} = 0.23. Therefore, the picture of Zhang-Rice singlet remains intact within the most prominent doping regimes of HTSCs.
We present local probe results on the honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Ba3CuSb2O9. Muon spin relaxation measurements in zero field down to 20 mK show unequivocally that there is a total absence of spin freezing in the ground state. Sb NMR measurements allow us to track the intrinsic susceptibility of the lattice, which shows a maximum at around 55 K and drops to zero in the low-temperature limit. The spin-lattice relaxation rate shows two characteristic energy scales, including a field-dependent crossover to exponential low-temperature behavior, implying gapped magnetic excitations.
We report detailed thermodynamic and transport measurements for non-superconducting La$_{1.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$CuO$_4$. Collectively, these data reveal that a highly-correlated Fermi-liquid ground state exists in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ beyond the superconducting dome, and confirm that charge transport in the cuprates is dominated at finite temperatures by intense electron-electron scattering.

We find that the first-order quantum phase transitions~(QPTs) are characterized by intrinsic jumps of relevant operators while the continuous ones are not. Based on such an observation, we propose a bond reversal method where a quantity $mathcal{D}$, the difference of bond strength~(DBS), is introduced to judge whether a QPT is of first order or not. This method is firstly applied to an exactly solvable spin-$1/2$ textit{XXZ} Heisenberg chain and a quantum Ising chain with longitudinal field where distinct jumps of $mathcal{D}$ appear at the first-order transition points for both cases. We then use it to study the topological QPT of a cross-coupled~($J_{times}$) spin ladder where the Haldane--rung-singlet transition switches from being continuous to exhibiting a first-order character at $J_{times, I} simeq$ 0.30(2). Finally, we study a recently proposed one-dimensional analogy of deconfined quantum critical point connecting two ordered phases in a spin-$1/2$ chain. We rule out the possibility of weakly first-order QPT because the DBS is smooth when crossing the transition point. Moreover, we affirm that such transition belongs to the Gaussian universality class with the central charge $c$ = 1.
