Many results in the theory of Gaussian processes rely on the eigenstructure of the covariance operator. However, eigenproblems are notoriously hard to solve explicitly and closed form solutions are known only in a limited number of cases. In this paper we set up a framework for the spectral analysis of the fractional type covariance operators, corresponding to an important family of processes, which includes the fractional Brownian motion and its noise. We obtain accurate asymptotic approximations for the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions. Our results provide a key to several problems, whose solution is long known in the standard Brownian case, but was missing in the more general fractional setting. This includes computation of the exact limits of $L^2$-small ball probabilities and asymptotic analysis of singularly perturbed integral equations, arising in mathematical physics and applied probability.

Eigenproblems frequently arise in theory and applications of stochastic processes, but only a few have explicit solutions. Those which do, are usually solved by reduction to the generalized Sturm--Liouville theory for differential operators. This includes the Brownian motion and a whole class of processes, which derive from it by means of linear transformations. The more general eigenproblem for the {em fractional} Brownian motion (f.B.m.) is not solvable in closed form, but the exact asymptotics of its eigenvalues and eigenfunctions can be obtained, using a method based on analytic properties of the Laplace transform. In this paper we consider two processes closely related to the f.B.m.: the fractional Ornstein--Uhlenbeck process and the integrated fractional Brownian motion. While both derive from the f.B.m. by simple linear transformations, the corresponding eigenproblems turn out to be much more complex and their asymptotic structure exhibits new effects.
We consider Gaussian measures $mu, tilde{mu}$ on a separable Hilbert space, with fractional-order covariance operators $A^{-2beta}$ resp. $tilde{A}^{-2tilde{beta}}$, and derive necessary and sufficient conditions on $A, tilde{A}$ and $beta, tilde{beta} > 0$ for I. equivalence of the measures $mu$ and $tilde{mu}$, and II. uniform asymptotic optimality of linear predictions for $mu$ based on the misspecified measure $tilde{mu}$. These results hold, e.g., for Gaussian processes on compact metric spaces. As an important special case, we consider the class of generalized Whittle-Matern Gaussian random fields, where $A$ and $tilde{A}$ are elliptic second-order differential operators, formulated on a bounded Euclidean domain $mathcal{D}subsetmathbb{R}^d$ and augmented with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our outcomes explain why the predictive performances of stationary and non-stationary models in spatial statistics often are comparable, and provide a crucial first step in deriving consistency results for parameter estimation of generalized Whittle-Matern fields.
To extend several known centered Gaussian processes, we introduce a new centered mixed self-similar Gaussian process called the mixed generalized fractional Brownian motion, which could serve as a good model for a larger class of natural phenomena. This process generalizes both the well known mixed fractional Brownian motion introduced by Cheridito [10] and the generalized fractional Brownian motion introduced by Zili [31]. We study its main stochastic properties, its non-Markovian and non-stationarity characteristics and the conditions under which it is not a semimartingale. We prove the long range dependence properties of this process.
The current research of fractional Sturm-Liouville boundary value problems focuses on the qualitative theory and numerical methods, and much progress has been recently achieved in both directions. The objective of this paper is to explore a different route, namely, construction of explicit asymptotic approximations for the solutions. As a study case, we consider a problem with left and right Riemann-Liouville derivatives, for which our analysis yields asymptotically sharp estimates for the sequence of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions.
Schreiber and Yukich [Ann. Probab. 36 (2008) 363-396] establish an asymptotic representation for random convex polytope geometry in the unit ball $mathbb{B}^d, dgeq2$, in terms of the general theory of stabilizing functionals of Poisson point processes as well as in terms of generalized paraboloid growth processes. This paper further exploits this connection, introducing also a dual object termed the paraboloid hull process. Via these growth processes we establish local functional limit theorems for the properly scaled radius-vector and support functions of convex polytopes generated by high-density Poisson samples. We show that direct methods lead to explicit asymptotic expressions for the fidis of the properly scaled radius-vector and support functions. Generalized paraboloid growth processes, coupled with general techniques of stabilization theory, yield Brownian sheet limits for the defect volume and mean width functionals. Finally we provide explicit variance asymptotics and central limit theorems for the k-face and intrinsic volume functionals.
