We use the topological entanglement entropy (TEE) as an efficient tool to fully characterize the Abelian phase of a $mathbb{Z}_2 times mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid emerging as the ground state of topological color code (TCC), which is a class of stabilizer states on the honeycomb lattice. We provide the fusion rules of the quasiparticle (QP) excitations of the model by introducing single- or two-body operators on physical spins for each fusion process which justify the corresponding fusion outcome. Beside, we extract the TEE from Renyi entanglement entropy (EE) of the TCC, analytically and numerically by finite size exact diagonalization on the disk shape regions with contractible boundaries. We obtain that the EE has a local contribution, which scales linearly with the boundary length in addition to a topological term, i.e. the TEE, arising from the condensation of closed strings in the ground state. We further investigate the ground state dependence of the TEE on regions with non-contractible boundaries, i.e. by cutting the torus to half cylinders, from which we further identify multiple independent minimum entropy states (MES) of the TCC and then extract the U and S modular matrices of the system, which contain the self and mutual statistics of the anyonic QPs and fully characterize the topological phase of the TCC. Eventually, we show that, in spite of the lack of a local order parameter, TEE and other physical quantities obtained from ground state wave function such as entanglement spectrum (ES) and ground state fidelity are sensitive probes to study the robustness of a topological phase. We find that the topological order in the presence of a magnetic field persists until the vicinity of the transition point, where the TEE and fidelity drops to zero and the ES splits severely, signaling breakdown of the topological phase of the TCC.

We study the robustness of the paradigmatic kagome Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) spin liquid and its orthogonal version, the quantum dimer model. The non-orthogonality of singlets in the RVB model and the induced finite length scale not only makes it difficult to analyze, but can also significantly affect its physics, such as how much noise resilience it exhibits. Surprisingly, we find that this is not the case: The amount of perturbations which the RVB spin liquid can tolerate is not affected by the finite correlation length, making the dimer model a viable model for studying RVB physics under perturbations. Remarkably, we find that this is a universal phenomenon protected by symmetries: First, the dominant correlations in the RVB are spinon correlations, making the state robust against doping with visons. Second, reflection symmetry stabilizes the spin liquid against doping with spinons, by forbidding mixing of the initially dominant correlations with those which lead to the breakdown of topological order.
We construct a topological spin liquid (TSL) model on the kagome lattice, with SU(3) symmetry with the fundamental representation at each lattice site, based on Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS). Using the PEPS framework, we can adiabatically connect the model to a fixed point model (analogous to the dimer model for Resonating Valence Bond states) which we prove to be locally equivalent to a $Z_3$ quantum double model. Numerical study of the interpolation reveals no sign of a phase transition or long-range order, characterizing the model conclusively as a gapped TSL. We further study the entanglement spectrum of the model and find that while it is gapped, it exhibits branches with vastly different velocities, with the slow branch matching the counting of a chiral $SU(3)_1$ CFT, suggesting that it can be deformed to a model with chiral $SU(3)_1$ entanglement spectrum.
We construct a short-range resonating valence-bond state (RVB) on the ruby lattice, using projected entangled-pair states (PEPS) with bond dimension $D=3$. By introducing non-local moves to the dimer patterns on the torus, we distinguish four distinct sectors in the space of dimer coverings, which is a signature of the topological nature of the RVB wave function. Furthermore, by calculating the reduced density matrix of a bipartition of the RVB state on an infinite cylinder and exploring its entanglement entropy, we confirm the topological nature of the RVB wave function by obtaining non-zero topological contribution, $gamma=-rm{ln} 2$, consistent with that of a $mathbb{Z}_2$ topological quantum spin liquid. We also calculate the ground-state energy of the spin-$frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the ruby lattice and compare it with the RVB energy. Finally, we construct a quantum-dimer model for the ruby lattice and discuss it as a possible parent Hamiltonian for the RVB wave function.
Among the quantum many-body models that host anyon excitation and topological orders, quantum dimer models (QDM) provide a unique playground for studying the relation between single-anyon and multi-anyon continuum spectra. However, as the prototypical correlated system with local constraints, the generic solution of QDM at different lattice geometry and parameter regimes is still missing due to the lack of controlled methodologies. Here we obtain, via the newly developed sweeping cluster quantum Monte Carlo algorithm, the excitation spectra in different phases of the triangular lattice QDM. Our results reveal the single vison excitations inside the $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid (QSL) and its condensation towards the $sqrt{12}timessqrt{12}$ valence bond solid (VBS), and demonstrate the translational symmetry fractionalization and emergent O(4) symmetry at the QSL-VBS transition. We find the single vison excitations, whose convolution qualitatively reproduces the dimer spectra, are not free but subject to interaction effects throughout the transition. The nature of the VBS with its O(4) order parameters are unearthed in full scope. Our approach opens the avenue for generic solution of the static and dynamic properties of QDMs and has relevance towards the realization and detection of fractional excitations in programmable quantum simulators.
Gapless Luttinger liquid is conventionally viewed as topologically trivial, unless it hosts degenerate ground states and or entanglement spectrum, which necessitates partial bulk degree of freedom to be gapped out. Here we predict an emergent gapless topological Luttinger liquid which is beyond the conventional scenarios and is characterized by the nontrivial many-body bulk spin texture, and propose feasible scheme for experimental observation. We consider a one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled Fermi-Hubbard model with fractional filling, whose low-energy physics is effectively described by a spinless Luttinger liquid and is trivial in the conventional characterization. We show that, as being tuned by the filling factor and interaction strength, the many-body ground state may exhibit nontrivial winding in its bulk spin texture in the projected momentum space, manifesting an emergent topological phase. A topological transition occurs when the projected spin-state at a high symmetry momentum becomes fully mixed one, resulting from competing processes of particle scattering to the lower and higher subbands, for which the spin texture at such momentum point is ill-defined, but the Luttinger liquid keeps gapless through the transition. Surprisingly, at relatively small filling the Luttinger liquid remains topologically nontrivial even at infinitely strong interaction. The results can be generalized to finite temperature which facilitates the real experimental detection. This work shows a novel gapless topological Luttinger liquid whose characterization is beyond the low-energy effective theory, and can be verified based on current experiments.
