The high velocity dispersion compact cloud CO-0.30-0.07 is a peculiar molecular clump discovered in the central moleculr zone of the Milky Way, which is characterized by its extremely broad velocity emissions ($sim 145 rm{km s^{-1}}$) despite the absence of internal energy sources. We present new interferometric maps of the cloud in multiple molecular lines in frequency ranges of 265--269 GHz and 276--280 GHz obtained using the Sumbmillimeter Array, along with the single-dish images previously obtained with the ASTE 10-m telescope. The data show that the characteristic broad velocity emissions are predominantly confined in two parallel ridges running through the cloud center. The central ridges are tightly anti-correlated with each other in both space and velocity, thereby sharply dividing the entire cloud into two distinct velocity components (+15 km s$^{-1}$ and +55 km s$^{-1}$). This morphology is consistent with a model in which the two velocity components collide with a relative velocity of 40 $mathrm{km s^{-1}}$ at the interface defined by the central ridges, although an alternative explanation with a highly inclined expanding-ring model is yet to be fully invalidated. We have also unexpectedly detected several compact clumps ($lesssim 0.1 $pc in radius) likely formed by shock compression. The clumps have several features in common with typical star-forming clouds: high densities ($10^{6.5-7.5} mathrm{cm^{-3}}$), rich abundances of hot-core-type molecular species, and relatively narrow velocity widths apparently decoupled from the furious turbulence dominating the cloud. The cloud CO-0.30-0.07 is possibly at an early phase of star formation activity triggered by the shock impact.

We report ALMA observations of a one-sided, high-velocity ($sim$80 km s$^{-1}$) CO($J = 2 rightarrow 1$) jet powered by the intermediate-mass protostellar source Serpens SMM1-a. The highly collimated molecular jet is flanked at the base by a wide-angle cavity; the walls of the cavity can be seen in both 4 cm free-free emission detected by the VLA and 1.3 mm thermal dust emission detected by ALMA. This is the first time that ionization of an outflow cavity has been directly detected via free-free emission in a very young, embedded Class 0 protostellar source that is still powering a molecular jet. The cavity walls are ionized either by UV photons escaping from the accreting protostellar source, or by the precessing molecular jet impacting the walls. These observations suggest that ionized outflow cavities may be common in Class 0 protostellar sources, shedding further light on the radiation, outflow, and jet environments in the youngest, most embedded forming stars.

We performed Herschel HIFI, PACS and SPIRE observations towards the molecular cloud interacting supernova remnant G349.7+0.2. An extremely broad emission line was detected at 557 GHz from the ground state transition 1_{10}-1_{01} of ortho-water. This water line can be separated into three velocity components with widths of 144, 27 and 4 km/s. The 144 km/s component is the broadest water line detected to date in the literature. This extremely broad line width shows importance of probing shock dynamics. PACS observations revealed 3 additional ortho-water lines, as well as numerous high-J carbon monoxide (CO) lines. No para-water lines were detected. The extremely broad water line is indicative of a high velocity shock, which is supported by the observed CO rotational diagram that was reproduced with a J-shock model with a density of 10^4 cm^{-3} and a shock velocity of 80 km/s. Two far-infrared fine-structure lines, [O~I] at 145 micron and [C~II] line at 157 micron, are also consistent with the high velocity J-shock model. The extremely broad water line could be simply from short-lived molecules that have not been destroyed in high velocity J-shocks; however, it may be from more complicated geometry such as high-velocity water bullets or a shell expanding in high velocity. We estimate the CO and H2O densities, column densities, and temperatures by comparison with RADEX and detailed shock models. Context. One of the keys to understanding the origin of the Ap stars and their significance in the general context of stellar astrophysics is the consideration of the most extreme properties displayed by some of them. In that context, HD 965 is particularly interesting, as it combines some of the most pronounced chemical peculiarities with one of the longest rotation periods known. Aims. We characterise the variations of the magnetic field of the Ap star HD 965 and derive constraints about its structure. Methods. We combine published measurements of the mean longitudinal field <Bz> of HD 965 with new determinations of this field moment from circular spectropolarimetry obtained at the 6-m telescope BTA of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. For the mean magnetic field modulus <B>, literature data are complemented by the analysis of ESO archive spectra. Results. We present the first determination of the rotation period of HD 965, P = (16.5+/-0.5) y. HD 965 is only the third Ap star with a period longer than 10 years for which magnetic field measurements have been obtained over more than a full cycle. The variation curve of <Bz> is well approximated by a cosine wave. <B> does not show any significant variation. The observed behaviour of these field moments is well represented by a simple model consisting of the superposition of collinear dipole, quadrupole and octupole. The distribution of neodymium over the surface of HD 965 is highly non-uniform. The element appears concentrated around the magnetic poles, especially the negative one. Conclusions. The shape of the longitudinal magnetic variation curve of HD 965 indicates that its magnetic field is essentially symmetric about an axis passing through the centre of the star. Overall, as far as its magnetic field is concerned, HD 965 appears similar to the bulk of the long-period Ap stars.
Filaments in Herschel molecular cloud images are found to exhibit a characteristic width. This finding is in tension with spatial power spectra of the data, which show no indication of this characteristic scale. We demonstrate that this discrepancy is a result of the methodology adopted for measuring filament widths. First, we perform the previously used analysis technique on artificial scale-free data, and obtain a peaked width distribution of filament-like structures. Next, we repeat the analysis on three Herschel maps and reproduce the narrow distribution of widths found in previous studies $-$ when considering the average width of each filament. However, the distribution of widths measured at all points along a filament spine is broader than the distribution of mean filament widths, indicating that the narrow spread (interpreted as a characteristic width) results from averaging. Furthermore, the width is found to vary significantly from one end of a filament to the other. Therefore, the previously identified peak at 0.1 pc cannot be understood as representing the typical width of filaments. We find an alternative explanation by modelling the observed width distribution as a truncated power-law distribution, sampled with uncertainties. The position of the peak is connected to the lower truncation scale and is likely set by the choice of parameters used in measuring filament widths. We conclude that a characteristic width of filaments is not supported by the available data.

When the cosmic star formation history peaks (z ~ 2), galaxies vigorously fed by cosmic reservoirs are gas dominated and contain massive star-forming clumps, thought to form by violent gravitational instabilities in highly turbulent gas-rich disks. However, a clump formation event has not been witnessed yet, and it is debated whether clumps survive energetic feedback from young stars, thus migrating inwards to form galaxy bulges. Here we report spatially resolved spectroscopy of a bright off-nuclear emission line region in a galaxy at z = 1.987. Although this region dominates the star formation in the galaxy disk, its stellar continuum remains undetected in deep imaging, revealing an extremely young (age < 10 Myr) massive clump, forming through the gravitational collapse of > 10$^9$ M$_{odot}$ of gas. Gas consumption in this young clump is > 10 times faster than in the host galaxy, displaying high star formation efficiency during this phase, in agreement with our hydrodynamic simulations. The frequency of older clumps with similar masses coupled with our initial estimate of their formation rate (~ 2.5 Gyr$^{-1}$) supports long lifetimes (~ 500 Myr), favouring scenarios where clumps survive feedback and grow the bulges of present-day galaxies.
