Generalized-ensemble simulations enable the study of complex adsorption scenarios of a coarse-grained model polymer near an attractive nanostring, representing an ultrathin nanowire. We perform canonical and microcanonical statistical analyses to investigate structural transitions of the polymer and discuss their dependence on the temperature and on model parameters such as effective wire thickness and attraction strength. The result is a complete hyperphase diagram of the polymer phases, whose locations and stability are influenced by the effective material properties of the nanowire and the strength of the thermal fluctuations. Major structural polymer phases in the adsorbed state include compact droplets attached to or wrapping around the wire, and tubelike conformations with triangular pattern that resemble ideal boron nanotubes. The classification of the transitions is performed by microcanonical inflection-point analysis.

We report Monte Carlo simulations of the self-assembly of supramolecular polymers based on a model of patchy particles. We find a first-order phase transition, characterized by hysteresis and nucleation, toward a solid bundle of polymers, of length much greater than the average gas phase length. We argue that the bundling transition is the supramolecular equivalent of the sublimation transition, that results from a weak chain-chain interaction. We provide a qualitative equation of state that gives physical insight beyond the specific values of the parameters used in our simulations.

Self-assembling, semi-flexible polymers are ubiquitous in biology and technology. However, there remain conflicting accounts of the equilibrium kinetics for such an important system. Here, by focusing on a dynamical description of a minimal model in an overdamped environment, I identify the correct kinetic scheme that describes the system at equilibrium in the limits of high bonding energy and dilute concentration.
The interplay of nematic order and phase separation in solutions of semiflexible polymers in solvents of variable quality is investigated by density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We studied coarse-grained models, with a bond-angle potential to control chain stiffness, for chain lengths comparable to the persistence length of the chains. We varied both the density of the monomeric units and the effective temperature that controls the quality of the implicit solvent. For very stiff chains only a single transition from an isotropic fluid to a nematic is found, with a phase diagram of swan-neck topology. For less stiff chains, however, also unmixing between isotropic fluids of different concentration, ending in a critical point, occurs for temperatures above a triple point. The associated critical behavior is examined in the MD simulations and found compatible with Ising universality. Apart from this critical behavior, DFT calculations agree qualitatively with the MD simulations.
The thermodynamic and elastic properties of a flexible polymer in the presence of dipole interactions are studied via Monte Carlo simulations. The structural coil-globular, solid-globular, and solid-solid transitions are mapped in the hyperphase diagram, parameterized by the dipole concentration, $eta$, and temperature, $T$. Polymer flexibility is usually quantified by the persistent length, $ell_p$, which is defined as the length on which the bond-bond correlation is lost. Non-monotonic flexibility of polymeric complexes as a function of $eta$ has been interpreted as a cooperative effect under the Worm-Like Chain model. Instead of the usual exponential behavior, $langle Cleft(kright)ranglepropto e^{-k/ell_p}$, here we show that the bond-bond correlation follows a power law decay, $langle Cleft(kright)rangleapprox c_0k^{-omega}$. The power law regime holds even at the coil-globular transition, where a Gaussian limit is expected, originated from non-leading terms due to monomer-monomer connectivity. The exponent $omega$ monotonically converges to the mbox{SAW} limit for large $eta$, if the isotherm pathway is constructed at the coil phase. The deviation from ideality in better probed at the chain segment size, and the expected $Theta-$condition at the $(T,eta)$ pathway near the coil-globular transition is not observed.
Using a coarse-grained bead-spring model for semi-flexible macromolecules forming a polymer brush, structure and dynamics of the polymers is investigated, varying chain stiffness and grafting density. The anchoring condition for the grafted chains is chosen such that their first bonds are oriented along the normal to the substrate plane. Compression of such a semi-flexible brush by a planar piston is observed to be a two-stage process: for small compressions the chains contract by buckling deformation whereas for larger compression the chains exhibit a collective (almost uniform) bending deformation. Thus, the stiff polymer brush undergoes a 2-nd order phase transition of collective bond reorientation. The pressure, required to keep the stiff brush at a given degree of compression, is thereby significantly smaller than for an otherwise identical brush made of entirely flexible polymer chains! While both the brush height and the chain linear dimension in the z-direction perpendicular to the substrate increase monotonically with increasing chain stiffness, lateral (xy) chain linear dimensions exhibit a maximum at intermediate chain stiffness. Increasing the grafting density leads to a strong decrease of these lateral dimensions, compatible with an exponential decay. Also the recovery kinetics after removal of the compressing piston is studied, and found to follow a power-law / exponential decay with time. A simple mean-field theoretical consideration, accounting for the buckling/bending behavior of semi-flexible polymer brushes under compression, is suggested.
