New large eddy simulation (LES) turbulence models for incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) derived from the variational multiscale (VMS) formulation for finite element simulations are introduced. The new models include the variational multiscale formulation, a residual-based eddy viscosity model, and a mixed model that combines both of these component models. Each model contains terms that are proportional to the residual of the incompressible MHD equations and is therefore numerically consistent. Moreover, each model is also dynamic, in that its effect vanishes when this residual is small. The new models are tested on the decaying MHD Taylor Green vortex at low and high Reynolds numbers. The evaluation of the models is based on comparisons with available data from direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the time evolution of energies as well as energy spectra at various discrete times. A numerical study, on a sequence of meshes, is presented that demonstrates that the large eddy simulation approaches the DNS solution for these quantities with spatial mesh refinement.

In this paper, we consider an online enrichment procedure using the Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method (GMsFEM) in the context of a two-phase flow model in heterogeneous porous media. The coefficient of the elliptic equation is referred to as the permeability and is the main source of heterogeneity within the model. The elliptic pressure equation is solved using online GMsFEM, and is coupled with a hyperbolic transport equation where local conservation of mass is necessary. To satisfy the conservation property, we aim at constructing conservative fluxes within the space of multiscale basis functions through the use of a postprocessing technique. In order to improve the accuracy of the pressure and velocity solutions in the online GMsFEM we apply a systematic online enrichment procedure. The increase in pressure accuracy due to the online construction is inherited by the conservative flux fields and the desired saturation solutions from the coupled transport equation. Despite the fact that the coefficient of the pressure equation is dependent on the saturation which may vary in time, we may construct an approximation space using the initial coefficient where no further basis updates follow. Numerical results corresponding to four different types of heterogeneous permeability coefficients are exhibited to test the proposed methodology.

This work proposes a new stabilized $P_1times P_0$ finite element method for solving the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. The numerical scheme is based on a reduced Bernardi--Raugel element with statically condensed face bubbles and is pressure-robust in the small viscosity regime. For the Stokes problem, an error estimate uniform with respect to the kinematic viscosity is shown. For the Navier--Stokes equation, the nonlinear convection term is discretized using an edge-averaged finite element method. In comparison with classical schemes, the proposed method does not require tuning of parameters and is validated for competitiveness on several benchmark problems in 2 and 3 dimensional space.

In this paper, we present a class of finite volume schemes for incompressible flow problems. The unknowns are collocated at the center of the control volumes, and the stability of the schemes is obtained by adding to the mass balance stabilization terms involving the pressure jumps across the edges of the mesh.

Globally-constrained classical fields provide a unexplored framework for modeling quantum phenomena, including apparent particle-like behavior. By allowing controllable constraints on unknown past fields, these models are retrocausal but not retro-signaling, respecting the conventional block universe viewpoint of classical spacetime. Several example models are developed that resolve the most essential problems with using classical electromagnetic fields to explain single-photon phenomena. These models share some similarities with Stochastic Electrodynamics, but without the infinite background energy problem, and with a clear path to explaining entanglement phenomena. Intriguingly, the average intermediate field intensities share a surprising connection with quantum weak values, even in the single-photon limit. This new class of models is hoped to guide further research into spacetime-based accounts of weak values, entanglement, and other quantum phenomena.
We present a practical approach for constructing meshes of general rough surfaces with given autocorrelation functions based on the unstructured meshes of nominally smooth surfaces. The approach builds on a well-known method to construct correlated random numbers from white noise using a decomposition of the autocorrelation matrix. We discuss important details arising in practical applications to the physicalmodeling of surface roughness and provide a software implementation to enable use of the approach with a broad range of numerical methods in various fields of science and engineering.
