We report the synthesis of single phase Bi3O2S3 sample and confirm the occurrence of bulk superconductivity with transition temperature at 5.8 K. The Bi3O2S3 super-conductor is categorized as the typical type-II supercon-ductor based on the results of both temperature and mag-netic field dependences of magnetization. Hall coefficient measurements give evidence of a multiband character, with a dominant conduction mainly by electron-like charge carriers. The charge carrier density is about 1.45 X 1019 cm3, suggesting that the system has very low charge carrier density.

Both Nb$_3$Pd$_x$Se$_7$ and Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ crystallize in a monoclinic point group while exhibiting superconducting transition temperatures as high as $T_csim 3.5$ and $sim 4.7 $ K, respectively. Disorder was claimed to lead to the extremely large upper critical fields ($H_{c2}$) observed in related compounds. Despite the presence of disorder and heavier elements, $H_{c2}$s in Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ are found to be considerably smaller than those of Nb$_3$Pd$_x$Se$_7$ while displaying an anomalous, non-saturating linear dependence on temperature $T$ for fields along all three crystallographic axes. In contrast, crystals of the latter compound displaying the highest $T_c$s display $H_{c2}propto (1-T/T_c)^{1/2}$, which in monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides is claimed to be evidence for an Ising paired superconducting state resulting from strong spin-orbit coupling. This anomalous $T$-dependence indicates that the superconducting state of Nb$_3$Pd$_x$Se$_7$ is quasi-two-dimensional in nature. This is further supported by a nearly divergent anisotropy in upper-critical fields, i.e. $gamma= H_{c2}^{b}/H_{c2}^{a^{prime}}$, upon approaching $T_c$. Hence, in Nb$_3$Pd$_x$Se$_7$ the increase of $T_c$ correlates with a marked reduction in electronic dimensionality as observed, for example, in intercalated FeSe. For the Nb compound, Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that an increase in the external field produces an anisotropic orbital response, with especially strong polarization at the Pd sites when the field is perpendicular to their square planar environment. Therefore, DFT suggests the field-induced pinning of the spin to the lattice as a possible mechanism for decoupling the superconducting planes. Overall, our observations represent further evidence for unconventional superconductivity in the Pd chalcogenides.
We have studied the intrinsic normal and superconducting properties of the oxypnictide LaFePO. These samples exhibit bulk superconductivity and the evidence suggests that stoichiometric LaFePO is indeed superconducting, in contrast to other reports. We find that superconductivity is independent of the interplane residual resistivity $rho_0$ and discuss the implications of this on the nature of the superconducting order parameter. Finally we find that, unlike $T_c$, other properties in single-crystal LaFePO including the resistivity and magnetoresistance, can be very sensitive to disorder.
Using a new horizontal flux growth technique to produce high quality crystals of the unconventional superconductor YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ has led to a seven-fold reduction in disorder scattering, resulting in mm-sized crystals with residual resistivities $simeq SI{0.45}{microohmcentimeter}$, resistivity ratios $simeq 430$ and sharp superconducting heat capacity anomalies. This enables searching multi-probe experiments investigating the normal and superconducting states of YFe$_2$Ge$_2$. Low temperature heat capacity measurements suggest a significant residual Sommerfeld coefficient, consistent with in-gap states induced by residual disorder as predicted for a sign-changing order parameter.
We report the synthesis and physical properties of single crystals of stoichiometric BaNi2As2 that crystalizes in the ThCr2Si2 structure with lattice parameters a = 4.112(4) AA and c = 11.54(2) AA. Resistivity and heat capacity show a first order phase transition at T_0 = 130 K with a thermal hysteresis of 7 K. The Hall coefficient is weakly temperature dependent from room temperature to 2 K where it has a value of -4x10^{-10} Omega-cm/Oe. Resistivity, ac-susceptibility, and heat capacity find evidence for bulk superconductivity at T_c = 0.7 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient at T_c is 11.6 pm 0.9 mJ/molK^2. The upper critical field is anisotropic with initial slopes of dH_{c2}^{c}/dT = -0.19 T/K and dH_{c2}^{ab}/dT = -0.40 T/K, as determined by resistivity.
Very recent report [1] on observation of superconductivity in Bi4O4S3 could potentially reignite the search for superconductivity in a broad range of layered sulphides. We report here synthesis of Bi4O4S3 at 5000C by vacuum encapsulation technique and basic characterizations. Detailed structural, magnetization, and electrical transport results are reported. Bi4O4S3 is contaminated by small amounts of Bi2S3 and Bi impurities. The majority phase is tetragonal I4/mmm space group with lattice parameters a = 3.9697(2){AA}, c = 41.3520(1){AA}. Both AC and DC magnetization measurements confirmed that Bi4O4S3 is a bulk superconductor with superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 4.4K. Isothermal magnetization (MH) measurements indicated closed loops with clear signatures of flux pinning and irreversible behavior. The lower critical field (Hc1) at 2K, of the new superconductor is found to be ~39 Oe. The magneto-transport R(T, H) measurements showed a resistive broadening and decrease in Tc (R=0) to lower temperatures with increasing magnetic field. The extrapolated upper critical field Hc2(0) is ~ 310kOe with a corresponding Ginzburg-Landau coherence length of ~100{AA} . In the normal state the {rho} ~ T2 is not indicated. Our magnetization and electrical transport measurements substantiate the appearance of bulk superconductivity in as synthesized Bi4O4S3. On the other hand same temperature heat treated Bi is not superconducting, thus excluding possibility of impurity driven superconductivity in the newly discovered Bi4O4S3 superconductor.
