We present an analysis of transfer of quantum information between the collective spin degrees of freedom of a large ensemble of two-level systems and a single central qubit. The coupling between the central qubit and the individual ensemble members may be varied and thus provides access to more than a single storage mode. Means to store and manipulate several independent qubits are derived for the case where the variation in coupling strengths does not allow addressing of orthogonal modes of the ensemble. While our procedures and analysis may apply to a number of different physical systems, for concreteness, we study the transfer of quantum states between a single electron spin and an ensemble of nuclear spins in a quantum dot.

We present a gauge-invariant density matrix description of non-equilibrium superconductor (SC) states with spatial and temporal correlations driven by intense terahertz (THz) lightwaves. We derive superconductor Bloch--Maxwell equations of motion that extend Anderson pseudo-spin models to include the Cooper pair center-of-mass motion and electromagnetic propagation effects. We thus describe quantum control of dynamical phases, collective modes, quasi-particle coherence, and high nonlinearities during cycles of carrier wave oscillations, which relate to our recent experiments. Coherent photogeneration of a nonlinear supercurrent with dc component via condensate acceleration by an effective lightwave field dynamically breaks the equilibrium inversion symmetry. Experimental signatures include high harmonic light emission at equilibrium-symmetry-forbidden frequencies, Rabi--Higgs collective modes and quasi-particle coherence, and non-equilibrium moving condensate states tuned by few-cycle THz fields. We use such lightwaves as an oscillating accelerating force that drives strong nonlinearities and anisotropic quasi-particle populations to control and amplify different classes of collective modes, e.g., damped oscillations, persistent oscillations, and overdamped dynamics via Rabi flopping. Recent phase-coherent nonlinear spectroscopy experiments can be modeled by solving the full nonlinear quantum dynamics including self-consistent light--matter coupling.
Solutions to the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a $Lambda$ system are computed using the single-soliton Darboux transformation and the nonlinear superposition principle. These allow complete control of information deposited by a signal pulse (with the help of an auxiliary control pulse) in the coherence of the mediums ground states by injecting sub-sequential pulses. Additionally, we study the encoding of two signal pulses and their manipulation by a control pulse and show that multipulse storage and control are possible as long as the imprints made by encoding the signal pulses are sufficiently separated.
We present a systematic approach based on Bloch vectors treatment and the Magnus quantum electrodynamical formalism to study qubit manipulation by a train of pulses. These investigations include one of the basic processes involved in quantum computation. The concrete calculations are performed for tunneling quantum dynamics, multiple resonance and off-resonance excitations of qubit driven by Gaussian pulses. In this way, the populations of qubit states due to multiple resonant interactions are investigated for various operational regimes including: single-pulse excitation, two-pulse excitation with phase shift between pulse envelopes being controlling parameter and for excitation with sequential pulses. In the last case, we demonstrate the formation of quasienergetic states and quasienergies of qubit driven by train of identical pulses. In this case the transition probability of qubit exhibits aperiodic oscillations, but also becomes periodically regular for definite values of the quasienergy.
We present the theoretical basis for and experimental verification of arbitrary single-qubit state generation, using the polarization of photons generated via spontaneous parametric downconversion. Our precision measurement and state reconstruction system has the capability to distinguish over 3 million states, all of which can be reproducibly generated using our state creation apparatus. In order to complete the triumvirate of single qubit control, there must be a way to not only manipulate single qubits after creation and before measurement, but a way to characterize the manipulations emph{themselves}. We present a general representation of arbitrary processes, and experimental techniques for generating a variety of single qubit manipulations, including unitary, decohering, and (partially) polarizing operations.
The symmetric collective states of an atomic spin ensemble (i.e., many-body states that are invariant under particle exchange) are not preserved by decoherence that acts identically but individually on members of the ensemble. We develop a class of collective states in an ensemble of N spin-1/2 particles that is invariant under symmetric local decoherence and find that the dimension of the Hilbert space spanned by these collective states scales only as N^2. We then investigate the open system dynamics of experimentally relevant non-classical collective atomic states, including Schroedinger cat and spin squeezed states, subject to various symmetric but local decoherence models.
