Heavy ion collisions at RHIC/LHC energies are well described by the (nearly ideal) hydrodynamics. Last year this success has been extended to higher angular harmonics, $v_n,n=3..9$ induced by initial-state perturbations, in analogy to cosmic microwave background fluctuations. Here we use hydrodynamics to study sound propagation emitted by quenched jets. We use the so called geometric acoustics to follow the sound propagation, on top of the expanding fireball. The conical waves, known as Mach cones, turn out to be strongly distorted. We show that large radial flow makes the observed particle spectra to be determined mostlly by the vicinity of their intersection with the fireballs space-like and time-like freezeout surfaces. We further show how the waves modify the freezeout surfaces and spectra. We end up comparing our calculations to the two-particle correlation functions at RHIC, while emphasizing that studies of dijet events observed at LHC should provide much better test of our theory.

Gravitational waves (GWs) produced by sound waves in the primordial plasma during a strong first-order phase transition in the early Universe are going to be a main target of the upcoming Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) experiment. In this short note, I draw a global picture of LISAs expected sensitivity to this type of GW signal, based on the concept of peak-integrated sensitivity curves (PISCs) recently introduced in [1909.11356, 2002.04615]. In particular, I use LISAs PISC to perform a systematic comparison of several thousands of benchmark points in ten different particle physics models in a compact fashion. The presented analysis (i) retains the complete information on the optimal signal-to-noise ratio, (ii) allows for different power-law indices describing the spectral shape of the signal, (iii) accounts for galactic confusion noise from compact binaries, and (iv) exhibits the dependence of the expected sensitivity on the collected amount of data. An important outcome of this analysis is that, for the considered set of models, galactic confusion noise typically reduces the number of observable scenarios by roughly a factor two, more or less independent of the observing time. The numerical results presented in this paper are also available on Zenodo [http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3837877].
We introduce a new quantile analysis strategy to study the modification of jets as they traverse through a droplet of quark-gluon plasma. To date, most jet modification studies have been based on comparing the jet properties measured in heavy-ion collisions to a proton-proton baseline at the same reconstructed jet transverse momentum ($p_T$). It is well known, however, that the quenching of jets from their interaction with the medium leads to a migration of jets from higher to lower $p_T$, making it challenging to directly infer the degree and mechanism of jet energy loss. Our proposed quantile matching procedure is inspired by (but not reliant on) the approximate monotonicity of energy loss in the jet $p_T$. In this strategy, jets in heavy-ion collisions ordered by $p_T$ are viewed as modifi
Factoring the pressure field of a harmonic sound wave into its amplitude and phase profiles provides the foundation for an analytical framework for studying acoustic forces that not only provides novel insights into the forces exerted by specified sound waves, but also addresses the inverse problem of designing sound waves to implement desired force landscapes. We illustrate the benefits of this acoustokinetic framework through case studies of purely nonconservative force fields, standing waves, pseudo-standing waves, and tractor beams.

A recent Letter has reported that sound waves can carry gravitational mass. I analyze this effect in a Hookes law solid, considering a wave packet moving in the $z$ direction with an amplitude that is independent of $x$ and $y$. The analysis shows that, at second order in an expansion around small amplitude vibrations, there is a small net motion of material, and thus mass, in the direction opposite to the wave packet propagation. This is a straightforward consequence of Newtons laws.

As an extension to our previous work, we study the transport properties of the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model in the black D4-brane background with smeared D0-branes (D0-D4/D8 system). Because of the presence of the D0-branes, in the bubble configuration this model is holographically dual to 4d QCD or Yang-Mills theory with a Chern-Simons term. And the number density of the D0-branes corresponds to the coupling constant ($theta$ angle) of the Chern-Simons term in the dual field theory. In this paper, we accordingly focus on small number density of the D0-branes to study the sound mode in the black D0-D4 brane system since the coupling of the Chern-Simons term should be quite weak in QCD. Then we derive its 5d effective theory and analytically compute the speed of sound and the sound wave attenuation in the approach of Gauge/Gravity duality. Our result shows the speed of sound and the sound wave attenuation is modified by the presence of the D0-branes. Thus they depend on the $theta$ angle or chiral potential in this holographic description.
